I bought a modern Eterna Royal Kon Tiki 2 Time Zones about 6 months ago and it has been a great watch wearing it to work and out and about and it has 5 ball bearings and ball bearings in the actual crown! Epic watch worth every penny!

Just to be pedantic, 'one ball bearing" might mean 'one ball bearing containing 5 steel balls' people often refer to steel balls as ball bearings.

Someone from Montreal says “FRERR” is the pronunciation, but not a bad attempt. My dear departed mom had an Eterna watch, which I inherited. My wife still wears it. It was bought at BIRK’S in Montreal close to 60 years ago, but when I tried to get it referenced, their records didn’t go back that far. It is fashioned as a “TANK” model, so still a good looking piece. If you’d like to peruse it or do a vid on it, I’d be honoured to send it.

The Kontiki story is pretty cool, when Thor Heyerdahl made his cross-ocean rafting voyage, he wore an Eterna watch. Says something about the quality of their pieces back in the 40’s, for sure. I really want to see one up close too!

I have no experience with any modern Eternas, but I do have one that’s a testament to what they built back in the day. My grandfather bought it in 1962 after getting fed up with watches that wouldn’t keep decent time. He wore it for decades beating it to death on a farm. Working on his tractor. Building two houses. Working on cars. You name it, he did it with that watch on his wrist. The watch took a hit one day under the tractor so hard, it dented the steel case. He had it serviced about ten years ago before giving it to me- the first time it had ever been serviced. The watch maker commented that it was one of the finest pieces he had ever serviced, and that it was still perfect. My grandfather passed in ‘17, but I still wear his watch on holidays and such. Still keeps great time after 60 years, and it’s a pleasure to wear, dent and all.

Actually I have three Eterna's, a Heavy Duty KonTiki divers late 70's/early 1980 watch, Also a Lovely Quartz from 90's and a Special Edition made Presentation watch. What I take away from this vid- is I can probably get spare parts. Many Thanks.

I just had a gift, ETERNA-MATIC KonTiki 1958 CHRONOMETER Limited Edition model ref. 1573.47 The movement has the five balls baring so it relates to the history of the brand and its logo. I knew ETA movements and how popular they are, but I never thought about the origins of them, so happy to get a watch with a great story behind it.

Nice review! Thanks for bringing some much deserved attention to a wonderful historic watchmaker. Eterna is one of my favorite brands. I own 6 modern Eternas and they’re all great watches. I have two with the caliber 39, one with the caliber 3501 (another in-house caliber), the Super KonTiki with the ETA you showed, and two other KonTikis with Sellita movements. All are fantastic and have very nice finishing. Cheers! Jon

Neat to hear the history. I just found a Centenaire in my basement. Used to be my Grandfather's I believe. Still works, date and all. It's in great shape. I just ordered a strap for it as the one on it is too big for me. Tonight I cleaned it up a bit, just the outside and tmrw when that strap comes in I'll have a new watch :) and it used to be my Grandfather's which is even cooler.

Bought a 1948 Legacy (Blue Dial) with the Sellita SW-300 caliber two years ago. Stunning looks, quality and precision. It looses +/- 2 SPD which is outstanding, better than an Oris, Longines, Mido, Tissot and Rado I also own. Can´t wait to get my hand on one with in house ETERNA movement, but still I think the Sellita is wayyyyy underrated. ETERNA shall rise from the ashes!!!!

I own one of their super kontiki fly back chronographs, which has a manufacture movement. It is a well finished watch for the money, the column wheel chronograph & fly back feature operates very nicely, and the action compares well to other high quality chronographs. Super fun watch. The mesh bracelet is excellent. I had to send mine back for service though.(under warranty) It happens, and as long as I don’t have any issues with the movement over the next couple years, it feels like a steal at the price I paid.

Jory - great topic. Eterna is a classic undervalued brand in the vintage space and really now a "name" purchased by a large private equity firm to sell watches with primarily general movements like the Sellita. I have a classic KonTiki 20 from the 1960s with the Eterna 1489k in-house movement (using the five ball bearings) on an original Gay Freres beads of rice bracelet that is wonderful. I also have one of the modern KonTiki Divers running the Sellita SW200-1 on the black rubber strap with folding diver's clasp. The modern watch is really well made and for a market price of $800 a pretty solid deal for a Swiss movement watch. But the vintage KonTiki 20 for a few hundred dollars more is a much better value - gorgeous watch.

Great quality, fantastic design with the pointer date, and maybe the best bracelet and clasp I have seen on Swiss watches of this price range. I bought a new Eterna 1948 in solid 18k gold about 20 years ago. I still have it now and it was running perfectly with its chronometer movement in the absence of a service for almost all that time (I don’t advise you do that!). It has a crocodile strap, gold twin trigger release clasp and sapphire display back which shows the beautiful movement. They probably made this version to celebrate their contribution to movement making in that year with the ball-bearings. It is a beautiful piece and I will never sell it. As an aside, and to give an example of how crazy things have become with pricing in the last 5-10 years, this watch had a higher retail when I bought it than the new Rolex Sea Dweller I ordered around the same period!

Good video! Believe most Sellita movements are a basically copies of ETA movements, so an Eterna with Sellita is at least distantly related. Would love to hear more about high quality, jeweled quartz movements from Switzerland and Japan... especially the ones that are fully jeweled and overhaulable, i.e., Seiko 7A28, and 7548 movements.

RGM is close by but I do wishes more people would appreciate these magical marvels more. There are several other US watch companies but I don't believe that they produce their own movements like ETA Valjoux Valgrange soprod. And the like.

Thanks for promoting Eterna. They have made some very nice watches. The Wittnauer brand is more c0okmplex than your discussion suggests. Wittnauer was a distributor for top Swiss makers starting in the late 19th century. The firm was started Eugene Roberts who imported Louis Audemars Agassiz and Logines. He married Martha Wittnauer. After Roberts dies she brought in her brother Albert Wittnauer who expanded the operation. They never made watxhes but imported very fine watches often under their own name or private label. They distributed and repaired Longines, Agassiz Audemars Piguet, and Touchon. Ultimately Longines bought them to control US distribution and used the name for lower price watches. Henry Fried wrote a very good book about Albert Wittnauer.

My first automatic, vintage fine Swiss watch was a 1955 Eternamatic that I bought 20+ years ago. I still have it and I still wear it. That watch kicked off my watch appreciation and intentional collecting as opposed to buying various watches that coalesced in the bottom of a drawer. Eterna is much more popular in Europe and the Mediterranean countries they rightfully should have a slot up there with Omega and Rolex. Talk about a value proposition!

Hi Jory. I was looking at the Eterna Adventic GMT Automatic (with the anthracite dial) and almost made the plunge 2 years ago. Looks amazing and I reckon the movement is in-house (I might be wrong). Anyway, I read in some watch forum that this particular movement has issues and that dissuaded me from making my move on this beauty. Reliability aside, I really like the watch and unusual colour scheme. Even the leather strap is unique 👌 See if you can lay your hands on this model from any subscriber in US for a review. I would gladly loan it to you for review, if I own one.

I was surprised you didn't talk about Eterna being acquired by CityChamp Watch and Jewelry Group. LTD (June 29, 2011)., a Hong Kong-based, Chinese consortium (nee Haidan Group) that owns Eterna, Corum, Rotary, Ernest Borel, J&T Windmills, Dreyfuss & Co,, as well as the Chinese mega brands, Ebohr and Rossini. The Porsche Design license was included as part of the Eterna purchase. Rossini and Ebohr have around a 50% share of the Chinese domestic watch market. CityChamp also owns a controlling interest in Dixmont (Five Goat Guangzhou Watch Factory), one of the largest producers of Chinese mechanical watch movements, and OEM manufacturer of the Guangzhou and Dixmont watch brands. So far, CityChamp seems content to keep Eterna and Corum, luxury Swiss manufacturers. Rotary's product line now has a significant, Chinese made segment.

Eterna is one of my favorite brands and I have been lucky enough to own a few of them over the years. I feel like their releases over the last 10-15 years have all been a case size too big. Their 44mm watches should be 42mm and the 42mm should be 40mm. I recently bought one of the Kontiki Date models and had to send it to the service center where it was stolen. They can't replace it so they are sending me one of the bronze Kontiki Divers to replace it.
