Hey, Jay, another great video. One thing to note: the Ford is the Club Coupe model, not the standard two-door sedan. The sedan has a longer greenhouse with roll-down rear windows and more rear legroom. The Club Coupe was much less popular when new, but considered much more desirable today. Also, the Ford's styling was considered much more modern at the time -- smooth rear quarter panels, a "flat" hood, etc. gave a more "of a piece" design that other cars lacked. Both are great cars.

As far as styling goes- Fords design in 1949 was a radical departure. The fenders no longer were hung on the side of the body but were more integrated into the body. The Dodges fenders are still hung on the side. This was in part why Ford was such a sales success in 1949.

The Dodge Wayfarer was an unusual short wheelbase model produced only in 2-Door versions. It was considered an entry level Dodge priced like a Plymouth from 1949 to 1952. Senior Dodges also offered 4-Door and Wagon versions and were called Meadowbrook and Coronet, both bigger and more expensive than the Wayfarer.

I think the Meadowbrook used left over '49 interior stuff. I think it only came in a four door sedan, while the Coronet had a full lineup.

I can see the similarities between the Dodge and my father's 1950 Plymouth, the Dodge being more upscale. My two sons and I did a body on frame restoration of a 50 Dodge four-door coronet. I cruised to car shows and cruises for years in it. Very reliable car. It had the Gyro Matic transmission which was what I thought a piece of automotive history to drive. Very comfortable and spacious and heavy on the turns. Comfortable speed on the open highways was about 50 miles an hour. The 6 V charging system and battery was never a problem with starting the car and sitting in extremely hot weather traffic it never overheated. Good videos keep them up.

The front brakes would pull sometimes which was a pain, that was a common problem with all Chrysler products back then. Breaking power was good but you had to watch out for brake fade. Going down steep hills you had to use engine breaking which they recommended in the owners manual.

We had a '49 Ford club coupe which we had for three years. My grandmother had a 1950 Dodge Wayfairer two door sedan just as you pictured for eleven years in what was then rural Maryland north of Washington. Today the dirt road that runs by her driveway is a four lane highway serving a suburban community that connects to I-270 Her nine acre property was sold to a developer, the house torn down and houses put up.

I really prefer that Dodge though, especially after the up close look at it inside. I think the lines of it are great, and the interior looks a lot nicer and more comfortable than the Fords. What an interesting pair to look at & compare. The Ford seems to be a club coupe (less interior space in the rear passenger compartment, more luggage space), while the Dodge is most likely a 2-door sedan (more interior, less luggage). BTW, if I am not wrong, the Dodge is a Wayfarer, which was a "smaller" Dodge car, based off of a shorter Plymouth chassis. Dodge also made a larger Coronet coupe, which didn't have this weird semi-fastback roof and, as far as I know, shared its central body section with DeSoto and Chrysler cars. It's funny that most modern authors write that the Mopars from this era were "tall and stodgy compared to competition", yet the Ford looks taller and boxier in this comparison. All in all, I like them both, but I've always had a soft spot for K.T. Keller's era MoPars, so as far as I am concerned - the Dodge wins; I especially like the interior - dashboard, square gauges, striped upholstery and all that. However, that said - I still think that the Dodge Coronet coupe looks better than this particular model. The Dodge also looks less "modern" for its age & more like a prewar car, especially the interior; even the door handle functions as it would on a prewar car. So, in its day, it probably would have appealed more to the seniors and more conservative buyers in general; however, in 2022 it makes very little difference ) both are cool old cars.

The best comparison for this Dodge would be a Mercury, Pontiac or Oldsmobile. The best comparison for the Ford would be a Chevrolet or Plymouth. In this comparison a club coupe was compared with a 2 door sedan so the trunk and back seat comparison was not apples to apples. Both are very nice cars with the Ford being more modern in style as compared to the Dodge for 1949.

Update 12-11-2022 I don’t remember cramped rear seats of my dad’s burgundy 49 Ford because I was under age 6 and he told me crankshafts broke on the Dodge. Based on video I’d buy the Dodge over the Ford. Passenger comfort and economy rule. The 1949 Ford was ground breaking design with simpler straightforward modern lines. The Dodge is a dated post WW 2 design. 49 Ford is one of the first cars I remember my dad owning besides a black Chevy Fleetline with a billiards 8 ball for a column mounted stick shift.

Not a fair comparison. The Ford is a "2 door Coupe", a less expensive version, bought by younger people that did not want grandpa's old car. The Dodge is a "2 door sedan" usually bought by young families that needed the extra room. Note that Dodge did make a "2 door coupe" that year, and Ford made a "2 door sedan". Also note that the re-styled Ford for 49 was the hot seller of the year and was a popular hot rod for the younger guys all throughout the 50's (I grew up in the 50's, this was one of my dream cars). Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth almost went bankrupt until they modernized their pre-war designs in the early 50's. In fact, the Chrysler President resigned, at the urging of the Board of Directors, due to falling so far behind in sales.

I guess the best of the Shoebox Fords, though, was its final year, in '51. The bugs that had plagued the earlier models were eliminated. Remember- in 1949 Ford was the entry level car from FoMoCo. The next step up was the Mercury. From Chrysler the Dodge was the second step up the ladder with Plymouth being on par with the Ford. So you would expect the Dodge to be a bit bigger, a bit heavier, a bit nicer finished, and a bit more money. Dodge was equal with the Pontiac or the low priced Oldsmobile. Ford didn't really have the levels of tiers that Chrysler and GM had.

Back then (early 50's) the 0-60 truly meant little. In town, many spped limits were still 25, some 35, even Rt 66 was 45 when posted. By the way you can thank Tom McCahill from Mechanix illustrated for the 0-60 tests. Personally I think the dash in the dodge is far nicer. Styling? Puffy old Ford,' single spinner' they used to be called in OZ. The dodge still has that WWII long wheelbase look, which may have a large rear seat area? The Dodge seems more late 30s, art deco in style, both inside and out. The Ford is a much newer design, but has its downsides with that. The Ford still has the V8, which is a draw for guys, the power stats won't matter. So much psychology involved in cars and the statement they make about the driver? The later 50s and the 60s in particular were where car design became such a dominant thing. At that time, guys formed their allegiances to a car brand, and stuck to it ( in Australia at least) Ford vs GM mainly, but Dodge Plymouth and Valiant were the third American, till Rambler AMC released their Rebel, with the big V8 and stole a few hearts. By that time, Studebaker was gone anyway. An interesting time, with some incredible cars from the UK, like the Bristol (an aircraft company) which made beautiful aluminium cars in the raw, glistening in the sun. The MG sports cars and Triumph Heralds and bug eyes. This was a time when all performance motorbikes were British, and the Japanese cars were starting to trickle in, with all the resentment from WWII still unforgiven. JAP-Crap was what the old timers called them. Till their economy and reliability shone through to break the prejudice. I also remember the Falcon 2 door Futura, and the incredible Mazda 909? With the biggest greenhouse I've ever seen on a car to date. Volvo P1800 sports, the market was wide open, with Renault and Citroën and you name it. The choice was incredible, for a while. Now they all look pretty much the same, for aerodynamics and safety reasons. (good really) At one time we were losing so many championship footballers in crashes in Hemi powered V8 Valiant's, the government was getting fidgety. A different time.

The Ford is a year older, yet it looks sleaker, and more modern. Also, you called the Dodge a Chevy when describing the rear fender. I know guys who would lose their minds for that! Lol!

It is - not necessary to read off a slide. The people can see and read the slide fine. You can refer to the slide, and talk about other things. It is typical in say business for style purposes for it to be communicate to people talking in meetings to teach them - do not read the slides.

The slides are made after the fact some of the information in the script isn’t on the slides.. It’s worked this way so far not changing because YOU don’t like it plus some people might put this one and listen in the background, like I said I make the slides it’s more personal to present the slides

You're kind of comparing apples and peaches...The Ford would be up against the Plymouth rather than the Dodge. The Ford styling was absolutely revolutionary. Chrysler and GM were still doing separate fenders, while the Ford was completely slab-sided and of a piece. GM and Chrysler was still clinging to the prewar philosophy. Actually, these Dodges were ( to me) absolutely fugly from the rear. The Ford styling is what made it be called the shoebox.

The Dodge in Plymouth shared the same body fort only had three contenders whereas GM and Chrysler had five contenders so there’s a bit of an overlap I always thought the Plymouth and Dodge competed with Ford Mercury competed with higher up dodges such as the cornet, and De Soto.. and Lincoln competed with Chrysler ( imperial wasn’t its own yet) Just wanted to show the huge contrast in these two body designs, The fair of the two comparisons would’ve been the two door Wayfair business coupe.. but that doesn’t have a backseat the two companies didn’t really make a body design that could be compared apples to apples basis I’m not sure about the Plymouth I haven’t been in a 50 Plymouth yet but my knowledge it was the same shell.. just less appointed

The Dodge was stilll pre war in styling. Ford started this new design of integrating hood and fender in 49. It took 4 years post war to retool for this new look.

Not quite. The Ford is definitely more modern in appearance for that time, but the Chrysler Corp. cars had had a postwar restyling and were not literally the same as they'd been in the early 1940s.

Didn’t have a Plymouth to compare to and ford only had 3 makes GM and Chrysler had 5 each so Plymouth and dodge overlapped in fords range (or at least that’s how I interpreted it) same holds true with Chevy and Pontiac

You are comparing apples and oranges. Dodge was a higher end vehicle and a higher price point. But you did show how the Ford body was a more modern body. What you took from the Ford was simply the Dodge body was actually early 40's styling.
