Honestly, I think Lola could’ve done this in a better way if she changed up her VTuber and her gimmick. Like, what if she was a Changeling VTuber who would become poorly made knockoffs of other VTubers, or her persona was some mega fan who would cosplay as other VTubers with less quality designs. Would be neat to see her go through a lot of bad knockoff designs, like an Iron Mouse that had her color scheme inverted, a buff Pupp who was a partially torn apart mascot costume, maybe a cardboard box designed to imitate porcelain maid. There’s a lot of room for creative liberties with poor knockoff designs that are intentional and bad.

But not passing Silhouette test Also not passing Recolor test Then not passing the Logo test Continued to not passing the Feature test Followed with not passing the Pose test Finally not passing the Accent test It wouldn't have been this big of drama if only she copied some other fluffy cat model and acknowledge that she's a huge fan of ShyLily.

The funniest part is that I don't think anyone would have cared if she hadn't made a fuss about it. There's a relatively popular indie VTuber who has a very similar design to ShyLily (even down to being a shark instead of an orca) and I've never seen anyone who even cares because she's not trying to ape her personality.

About those manufactured "drama" accounts... Those names are basically what chatgpt would spit out if you asked for a name based on the traits in their pfps.

It's wild, I don't think you can accidentally plagiarize that accurately. I think that if you want to be a vtuber, or just stream in general your personality is always going to be what gets people to come back. Focus on yourself and get a design that is original and recognizable. I wish her the best should she learn from this and move forward to become her own in the future.

This kinda seems like a sad case of someone liking Shylily so much that they became obsessed. They wanted to become just like Shylily, but they felt compelled to deny it at every turn, and felt so guilty about it that they made alt accounts to attack herself. Finally they just kinda imploded on themselves and I hope they get better and learn to enjoy just being themselves.

I may just be looking too into this, but comparing Lily and Lola's logos, do parts of Lola's look poorly traced to anyone else? The first thing that stood out to me was the "S" in "Smol": the main body of the letter and the dorsal fin are relatively smooth, but once you get to the tail, the transition becomes less natural and the lines are more angular until it reaches the tail fins, but after you showed the closeup, I noticed the tail branching off Lola's "L" is pretty much an exact copy of Lil's "Y" just mirrored and with a few fur details added on.

As soon as i heard her copying the accent... my jaw dropped from how much shocked it was. Theres a limit to an inspiration (Even saying you don't know shylily you little liar) but im just shocked in a bad way. Im just speechless of how she think she would sneak around without issues.

I feel like she still has the accent in the old clip because she sounds like she's saying her th's as da's but she definitely accentuates it later on to sound more like lily.

Let's not kid ourselves, even those "Doesn't look like ShyLily" models look like ShyLily, just with a different outfit and color palate. Lily could just come out with different clothes for her model and different hairstyles/colors, and it will look exactly like that. You can't tell me it doesn't look like ShyLily anymore just because she's in different clothes, so you can't tell me even those previous Lola models "Don't look like ShyLily". Seems a bit of a stretch to me

I am an artist and have my own vtuber model. Have not streamed yet, but I did commission my model. To play a tiny bit of devil’s advocate: These are two entirely different designs with a similar silhouette because they are vtubers based on similar sea creatures. The outfit looks similar but nobody owns school girl crop top and a ruffly skirt. Even then the outfits are different with both the shoulders being cold on Lola’s design and the straps being different. I didn’t think any of the swimsuit designs looked appealing and it would be easy to agree with that and go find an artist who would draw your oc in a pretty dress/crop top and skirt. Having an actual outfit allows for more flow-y parts that draw the eye. I would not want my vtuber model in a swimsuit either. If its animated I want fabric movement. And if my sea-creature based I want something that looks summery and flowy and like I’m about to be at the beach. Draw these two in different poses and they’re clearly only based off of similar animals, + the weird ears. Yes the tails are similar. How else are you going to put a dolphin/orca/whale tail on a vtuber model where it is visible but not in the way? I feel like some aspects in VTuber models specifically DO have this “Well pants need to be two pant legs and wasteband” because there are practical ways to position/model/rig a vtuber model. To best show off the design, a-pose works really well, you don’t want anything coming in and getting in the way of the face, etc. That’d be like saying Catboy A is the same as Catboy B because their ears and tails are similarly placed/have similar physics in their models. Like.. Yes. The artist and rigger of Catboy A did a really good job animating the tail and Catboy B wanted a similar look. You cannot “steal” an art style or the way a tail moves. If Lola wanted to be based off of an orca/dolphin/whale, and have a similar tail, she was ALWAYS going to be compared to Shylily because Shylily did it first. “I recolored and changed the patterns, look how similar they are!” Lol. No shit? They’re based off of similar sea creatures and are both anime girls with long hair, ears and an orca/dolphin tail wearing a crop top and skirt. That’d be like saying a crop top and a skirt is the same exact outfit as a different crop top with a different skirt. It isn’t. Colors are a massive part of design. When you recolor something to look like something else, it’s going to look like that something else. The ONLY things about this that are bad are: 1: If the model itself is traced, which I don’t think it is. 2: Her copying Shylily’s accent is disgusting and weird. She should have her own personality and brand. 3: She should have admitted earlier that Shylily was an inspiration. 4: Creating her own drama and responding to herself for engagement. Terrible. 5: Just dont copy people’s brands. Literally none of this would have happened if she just said, “Yeah! I took inspiration from the way Shylily did xyz on her model and had xyz toggles. You should come check out my stream anyway, because I still have something different to offer.” And like. Not copied her brand. Tl;dr The design is fine, and super cute, and I actually like it a great deal more than Shylily’s. Lola’s actions are the problem.

You could totally be another orcacat or whatever type vtuber but that’s a “this is my fraternal twin sister” kinda close in the models. Especially compared to the old model which was way more distinct, the accent change, the knock off version like catchphrase, etc. Big “if I can’t compete with her, I’ll just be her” vibes. Way beyond just copying metas and trends like almost every vtuber does.

TO BE FAIR, its quite impressive to impersonate ShyLily's accent to a TEE, that was actually impressive.

Even if Smollola's vtuber model can be handwaved away as ""legally distinct enough"" from Shylily's vtuber model a la Pal World to Pokemon, there's still a statement that she's making by being that derivative. That statement is "I should be measured against that whom I'm taking this much inspiration from." While Pal World has effectively got away with it by doing many things amazingly (examples include serving non-Nintendo consoles and older demographics, which were incredibly underserved), Smollola has some HUGE shoes to fill to get away with this maneuver herself. My money's on her not surpassing Shylily's entertainment value.

Yikes, I'm taking the first dive into using animated models in general and this is crazy 😭 I personally agree with the "too many accidents" part, and even though intention matters, the result is most often going to take up the attention. Maybe a plausible way to resolve this would be for the two creators to discuss and come to a public agreement together? No idea about what's gonna happen next because I've never seen either of them before, so I'm trying to comment with the little information that I have.

I've been binge watching dramas of the past year for 4 hours straight. I think I got brain rot.

JFC... I said on twitter that it's disgusting that an artist would create such a rip off of Lily's model, cause there's no way you could make something that close without intentionally referencing it, but firing your artist (that you couldn't steer them that way) by finding another artist who would take over the project and make a more Lily like design... more scumbaggery. Funny thing is, nothing in Lily's accent is a UK accent but apparently it's not a proper German accent either... I always had trouble placing it because it sounded Nordic but not quite, so finding out she's tweaked down her accent makes a lot of sense. My experience has been that what people mean when they say their accent is (legitimately) a combination is that you tend to settle a main accent when first learning to speak but if you spend enough time interacting with people in a sufficiently different accent or dialect you'll start to pick up weird quirks from them. Things like "Zee" vs "Zed", if you hear the one different from your own enough you'll start to pick it up as a social mirroring. Obviously, the older you get the less it happens and the whole thing goes out the window when dealing with other languages... here's where we get back to Lily: A German speaking English will have an accent determined by how and when they learned English, who they learned from, and how much conscious effort they've put into correcting bleed over pronunciation. It's really easy to spot how this works with people who are English/Japanese bilingual since the phonetics are different enough to bleed obviously but close enough to be corrected cleanly, where as most people taking English as a second language can't fully lose the bleed over. Lumituber is a nice example, her English fluent and correctly pronounced but there's still a trace of Finnish. Compare that to Merryweather who has an incredibly clean RP English accent to the point you wouldn't know he was Danish.

There are some comments here saying they don't care about this drama (but are bothered enough to leave a comment), claiming that Shylily's model is not even similar to hers, or directly telling people to stop talking about this drama. Given that Lola has an alleged track record of making fake Vtuber accounts to "harass" herself, and it appeared that she didn't really have that much of a huge following enough to build her own army of white knights, it makes me wonder if any of these comments were left by Lola's burner accounts.

the problem with that design and why her comparaison saying they have more differences than similarities doesn't work is that all the differences are MINOR DETAILS apart from the color scheme while the similarities are big enough to make them indistinguishable in the case where you'd black out their silhouettes.

It’s not about the tiny design differences because that doesn’t matter when the entire design style is clearly a copycat/reskin, in its totality. Just because you added a couple holes to the dress and a texture to the hair doesn’t change the fact you clearly drew it to be a doppleganger

What’s crazy is that this has happened before but not just with Indy vtubers (though it has unfortunately), company vtubers have done it too. Though many times the model in question will get discontinued after receiving backlash. Oh and there’s been companies who actually repurpose their models. Some time back a male vtuber was gonna debut in a company via their English branch but he either backed out last minute due to the crazy controversy the company was getting or was kicked to the curb by management then some months or so later the company is like “Hey we got this Japanese male vtuber debuting soon, hope you like him.” and the model is the exact same as the one for the guy who never got to use it. I believe this company also did this with a female model too or it might have been another equally shady company but either way it’s happened twice to my knowledge.

If I was a Vtuber and was getting a model, I would make it public information that I was taking inspiration from someone else. But how I'll do it differently than Lola is by first; asking said inspiration if its okay and for input. Second; I'll try to make the animal influences be tied to a specific animal that's endangered and not be something common like a Dolphin vs Shylily's Orca so I could further differentiate myself down the line. Overall, this whole situation was a bad PR stunt both created and followed by many unforgettable mistakes. However, I hope Lola eventually comes clean about the copying and chooses to make a clean slate with a new model.
