Dahlia Lithwick, Senior Editor with Slate, Dr. Kavita Patel, MSNBC Medical Contributor, and Claire McCaskill, former Senator from Missouri join Nicolle Wallace on Deadline White House with reaction to today’s supreme court arguments over the commonly used abortion pill Mifepristone, and how early on in the case conservative and liberal justices alike pointed to the fact that the anti-abortion activists who brought the case lacked standing to do so.

It’s just like banning books. If you don’t want to read it or have your children read it, then don’t. It doesn’t give you the right to tell everyone that they cannot read it themselves. It goes against the very fabric of what our nation is supposed to be.

Roe v. Wade was decided by a court, not passed by a legislature. This is a rather important distinction.
@eh3477

It's part of the strategy to end abortion rights, then birth control. They all belong to/represent far-right evangelical groups, who have recently become successful imposing their limitations on everyone else. Think Dobbs, and the stupid Hobby Lobby case, etc. They've been emboldened by recent past bad court decisions, corrupt religious judges, and so on. If they were just arguing for their own selfish limitations, then yes, the answer should be, "get another job!" , like the rest of us do when our employer does something we deeply disagree with. But that's not the REAL issue here.
@bevtaylor5466
@bevtaylor5466 Ай бұрын
@markkozlowski3674 The only important distinction is that Roe v Wade allowed nearly 50 years of women being freed of dangerous backalley procedures that threatened lives. Most women alive now have only known the safety of whatever they needed was in the hands of legitimate doctors. The reversal has meant that pregnancy in the red states has become dangerous, because even in wanted pregnancies that become a medical crisis, women find no help. They are sent home to get worse, because politicians might go after the doctors and hospitals that offer timely care. The only thing that is important is to return to doctors and patients determining what is right in individual medical decisions. The politicians and courts need to step out of the way.

I'm a very, VERY fortunate and grateful recipient of a heart transplant, after the one I was born with slowly failed over many years. When I see phony arguments like this one, claiming that health care workers are suffering "injury" for doing their jobs and giving patients the treatments they need as their doctors have prescribed them, I can't help but imagine a similar argument that says I must now surrender my heart because the donor who gave it to me might not approve of what I do with it in my body. Oh, sure, they agreed to be an organ donor when they were alive, but now that they're not, they no longer have any say in how their heart is used. How must the surgeons and other care professionals who participated in the transplant feel about that?!?! That's how much sense this makes.

Why would this abortion pill be unsafe for women if this has been approved by the FDA as safe and effective? Right now, most of the Supreme Court justices are in deep skepticism to curtail this drug. Also, they were warned by the president during the state of the union address about how powerful are women in making decisions. Also, why would the FDA guidelines be unsafe? FDA saved our lives!
@VoltisArt
@VoltisArt Ай бұрын
FDA approval is not the end-all word on things being safe. Some products have been recalled after approval because they were later found to be unsafe. Others (not many) are banned in other countries with more strict drug and dietary guidelines. Then you have mifepristone, which has both unrecalled FDA approval and decades of safe usage, beating out the likes of Tylenol with infrequency and severity of problems. No one has a reasonable argument that the drug is dangerous to the public. They only offer this empty baseless argument so they can gain political power.

The symbol of JUSTICE is a set of scales. Which confers that the law must have balance on both sides. Therefore banning the rights to have an abortion is simply wrong. There are already legal protections for the medical proffession, the overy & the feotus. Yet the deprivation of women to have juristriction over their own body is denied & UNJUST. SCOTUS must install the judgement balance to include womens rights. Inappropriate hypotheticals over potential outcomes using a prescibed approved drug, remain inappropriate.

When Roe v Wade passed, my grandmother told me things women used to do to keep their families small enough to feed them all through the Great Depression and Dust Bowl hardships when it was legally considered obscenity to mail someone instructions on contraception. She said my generation was lucky to have family planning without risk of permanent damage or demise. Back then it seemed impossible that the SC would turn the clock back so far. They have expressed ambitions to overturn every decision based on right to privacy other than Loving v Virginia. For some mysterious reason, even the draconian and bargain-priced Clarence Thomas thinks on that one issue we should be allowed to make our own choices. If we don't make the SC follow an enforceable code of ethics fast, they can take away any rights they personally want for themselves and their loved ones. In case of a life-threatening pregnancy for someone they care about, someone who has the outside income of a reasonably priced SC justice can fly that woman somewhere she can get health care. A majority of them don't give a rat's tail that most folks can't afford to buy access to things they outlaw. Keep this up and they'll keep quoting some Witchfinder General u until this is the New Gilead Margaret Atwood warned of.✌🖖

I feel like this should open the door to questioning the ruling overturning Roe. Are any reasonable or even noteworthy number of doctors or patients _forced_ to perform any sort of abortion? What American citizens (those are people who breathe air and currently have social security numbers) are harmed by allowing abortion? Does that number outweigh the injury to women forced to carry out unwanted and dangerous pregnancies?
@spracketskooch
@spracketskooch Ай бұрын
Unwanted pregnancies and dangerous pregnancies are not the same thing, and the latter are exceedingly rare, way less than one percent of pregnancies. It's the difference between being unwilling to work, and being unable to work. There's probably ten people in the country that have a problem with an abortion to save the mother's life. There are millions of people in the country, billions around the world, that don't think "I don't want it" is a good enough reason to have an abortion, especially past a couple months. Most people, outside the extremely religious, think that something like "the morning after" pill is fine. I really don't see a problem with any of that. I also suspect that something similar to Roe v Wade will be reinstated. Roe was argued on the basis of privacy, which makes no sense. Even RBG agreed and predicted it would be overturned. It'll just come back as some version argued from a stronger basis.

@spracketsckooch What right wing website is the source of your claim? Do you think nobody on here knows how to use a search engine to find out you are way off on the percentages? *Here's the big picture, folks.* *Currently, the Boomers are ranging in age from 60-78 years of age. The folks from the generation before them are obviously older.* *Boomers are retiring and collecting Social Security and using Medicare. The older ones are entering nursing homes, putting an even bigger dent in the Medicare system.* *There aren't as many babies being born nowadays. Fewer babies born means fewer workers to pay into Social Security and Medicare to fund the Boomers (and those older) that are currently crippling the programs with more and more of them signing up for benefits every day.* *Bans on abortion isn't about morality. It's all about making sure that the population grows at a steady pace to ensure that there will be funding in place to keep the Social Security and Medicare programs solvent. This government wants to ban abortions to ensure more births.* *Also part of the big picture is the reason lawmakers want to raise the full retirement age to 70. Delaying when people can apply for Social Security means less money paid out.* *Cutting Social Security altogether would bring about a revolt in this country. People who worked all their lives and paid into it being told to go hungry in their twilight years? I don't think so.*
