One night on a Zoom call, Tony got started talking about the mask for Phantom. Did you know that the masks used on stage (and here) are custom made for the artist? They are only meant to be worn once, but with care can be used more. They are made in such a way that no part of the mask actually touches the artist’s face, so they can sing and emote freely. Tony is also pretty good with the cape. He got a lot of practice when he played Dracula in Universal’s Beetlejuice show (which also had Geoff, Kathy and J None performing - not always all at the same time.)

I’m so happy you loved this song! When this song came out I had it replay for like a week straight and still play it regularly on my playlist. 💛 so much fun! It’s like climbing into a time machine when I watch these older videos So happy about your new set up, I agree the eco goes away almost completely when the mic is close, can’t wait to see your setup when it’s finished Great reaction hun! Couldn’t stop smiling and laughing 👌🏻💛👌🏻

It's gorgeous. Tony Wakim was the baritone, if or when you do Road Trip and/or the Full Chicken Song (both songs live) you will see Tony and Earl still in the group. When he stopped being the baritone, he and Layne bought Pattycake Studio/Productions which is what Tony really wanted to do. It's why VoicePlay and Geoff solos are so often done there.

Yes - that was Tony. He was the baritone before J None and is co-owner of PattyCake with Layne. This was really the beginning of their more theatrical videos. I believe previously most of their songs were done standing/sittting in a grouping without costuming or really much in acting. Much less drama, more typical music video. Also at that time, they were still performing Live more often. An FYI on your new set-up: There is less echoing of your voice when you pick up the mike and bring it close to your mouth. I would suggest attempting to place it much closer to you until you get to the point where you can do some sound dampening on the walls. If you can't, it isn't a really big deal, as the echo is not that bad. It just sounds better without the echo.

Yeah the echo is the biggest thing when it's not close my mouth. Right this second I can't really keep it close close my mouth however in a couple days hopefully that will change as my desk will be delivered and then I can just place the mic on the desk and be close to mouth.

Departure: at the time, yes, but they've continued down that path. When they first started singing under the name 4:2:Five, they were a pretty normal acapella group that did acapella arrangements of mostly pretty well-known songs, and I think maybe some original songs. At some point, however, they started doing musical skits (like Auditions and Road Trip and The Chicken Song and A Crimpella), which was how they engaged their theatrical side. (This is why they lost on The Sing Off: they couldn't figure out how to turn stuff like Road Trip into the 3-4 minute pop songs that the show runners wanted, so they didn't really do anything with their theatrical talents during the competition. Instead they just took random pop songs and did acapella versions of them, most of which were extremely forgettable.) But then they had the idea to engage their theatrical side by doing _this_ thing, and it was awesome; a few months later they did My Shot, and then Still Alive, and then Grim Grinning Ghosts, and it starts to become a pattern. Before long they were doing Disney medleys, and stuff from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and then they started doing the "5 minutes" series, wherein they string a bunch of songs together into a medley and use the video to tell a story of their own. This is how they became the "theatre kids" of acapella music videos. Phantom of the Opera is the "departure" that lead to all of it.

If you think the beginning of this was spooky, you should hear what they did with Disney’s Once Upon A Dream. I hope you done mind one small bit of advice. For the best reaction to this one, stop it all you like for the first minute. But then let it run for the next minute without interruption. Well, maybe not a full minute more, but you’ll know when you can stop it. I can’t wait to see your reaction!
