This song appeared on the soundtrack to the hit movie, Cocktail starring Tom Cruise. The song went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 1988. This song was The Beach Boys' only #1 song of the 1980s. By the way, John Stamos toured with them during the summertime of 1988. Great song indeed!!!

Uncle Jesse - aka John Stamos was an "honorary Beach Boy" when I saw them perform with him in concert in the early 90's. He wasn't there for the classic 60's songs but they brought him out to play drums on this song and as I recall he stayed for others and did an amazing drum solo. And I want whatever evil magic keeps him, Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue from aging!!

Stamos appeared in the video for “Kokomo” even though he didn’t expect to. “We were doing a special and the main thing was we were doing a version of ‘Wipeout’ with the Fat Boys, who were a rap group,” Stamos told The Birmingham News. At the time, Stamos and The Beach Boys stayed at a Disney resort called Grand Floridian. They were the resort’s first guests.

When "Kokomo" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988 for 1 week, it set the record for the longest span between a band's last two #1s (1966's "Good Vibrations & 1988's "Kokomo"). They invited John Stamos to be an honorary member of "The Beach Boys" which is why the Beach Boys made an appearance on "Full House." Brian Wilson (ironically had no involvement with this song) is the father of Carnie & Wendy Wilson (two members of the group "Wilson Phillips" - the third member, Chynna Phillips, is the daughter of John & Michelle Phillips - of "The Mamas & The Paps")

John Stamos actually played with them earlier than 1993. On July 4th 1990 I was in Presque Isle Maine and they did a concert at the fairgrounds. We were shocked to see that Brian Wilson was actually touring with them as he didn't really tour much at the time.. then to see John Stamos playing drums was wild. Then they kicked it up a notch and when they started singing Surfer Girl , Paula Abdul (who was dating John Stamos at the time) came out on stage and started dancing with Mike Love... Until Stamos tapped him on the shoulder and cut in. One of my favorite concerts ever!

This is from the late 80s, a time of change for the band. Brian Wilson, the real brains behind the group, had left, & his brother, Dennis, the drummer, had died. The rest of the Boys got back together with, yes, John Stamos on drums - he was a huge fan & long-time fan. This tune was from the soundtrack for a Tom Cruise film, 'Cocktail'. This song is from the movie Cocktail and was a huge, huge hit when it came out in 1988. I remember hearing Casey Kasem say during the Weekly Top 40 Countdown that because of this song people were trying to book holidays to this place called Kokomo. There is a Kokomo, IN but sadly there’s no real island destination called Kokomo. And I’ve never seen Cocktail, but I still keep this song on my playlists. Very big hit in the '80s. This and Wipeout(fat boys) help them to hit on the charts for the '80s. Fun fact it was the Beach boys that actually started the acid Rock or hippie Rock in the sixties. They and the Beatles were so much influenced and rivals against each other they started taking it up a notch. And rock was never the same... Out with the teenie bop Rock, in with the deep meaning classics.. so influence that a lot of the blues artists became rockers. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin.. etc.... And yes uncle Jess was a beach boy drummer for the '80s. Lol

I'm sure Im not the first to point this out, but there is no actual "Kokomo" - they made it up because it sounds cool and it worked with the vibe of the song. My oldest and dearest friend and I bonded over our mutual love of the Beach Boys (also John Denver) but we couldn't let on to our "rocker" friends. For them we were all about Led Zeppelin, YES, Pink Floyd and that kind of thing. It's still funny to us that in 1975-76 when we were trying to introduce our friends at high school in Seattle to this new band were in love with they didn't want to know. That band was RUSH and "2112" had just dropped. Nobody liked it then, but years later they finally saw the light. i am stuck in a hospital room recovering from a series of "mini strokes". I have been loving your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times. You guys are about the same age as our kids and it's really a great comfort to watch your reactions. You bless me with your fun and energetic response to this music that I have know, and we've raised our kids to know and love (we even took them to see RUSH live at The Gorge for the TIme Machine Tour in 2011). @@teknikel Yes, you are absolutely correct. Somewhere I read that the Sandals resort people have a location called Kokomo as well. It's a matter of debate as to whether or not Mike Love or "Papa" John Phillips actually knew that either place existed. In an interview with Mike he claims that it was entirely made up, but he didn't specify who actually came up with the title location. But, you're right. I should have said there is no island "off the Florida keys" called Kokomo. That's the part they admit to making up.

Yea, John Stamos plays with The Beach Boys. Stamos has occasionally performed in concert with The Beach Boys, dating back to 1985, typically playing drums and various other percussion instruments. In 1988, he appeared in their video for "Kokomo", in which he played both the conga drums and the steel drums. In 1990, he played drums for them on the title track of the comedy Problem Child and also appeared in the song's music video. In 1992, he sang lead vocals on a new version of "Forever" for their album Summer in Paradise. The song was originally written and sung by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson and released in 1970. The song was also featured twice on Full House. The first was a recording sung at his character's wedding, while the second was a recording sung for his character's twin sons. The 1992 music video, titled "Forever by Jesse and the Rippers," featured Stamos predominantly. However, three of The Beach Boys members are briefly shown singing harmonies with Stamos: Carl Wilson, Bruce Johnston, and Mike Love.

Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) was on the drums because he and Mike Love were friends. John was a huge Beach Boys fan and Mike Love was happy to have a hot young celebrity involved. A few years later John famously covered a Beach Boys song on Full House called, "Forever." If you saw the episode where he dedicates the song to his children and wife, you'd remember it. This version of the song was even included on a Beach Boys album and John would perform live with them on occasion.

John Stamos first met them at a concert where his friend was playing guitar for them; they saw that he was being chased by cheerleaders and whatnot because he was on the hit soap opera General Hospital in 1982-84 then they said to get him on stage. He plays with them occasionally until this day since 1985. They had two or three appearances on Full House in the 80s and popularized The Beach Boys for another generation like myself. This is their first number one hit in 22 years (their last was in 1966). John Phillips from the Mamas and the Papas helped write the song along with lead singer Mike Love. John Stamos actually redid their song "Forever" on Full house - I never knew that was a beach boys song until many many years later.

John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) played drums with the Beach Boys Occasionally Back in the 80's and he made an album with his own band. I saw him in Cupertino California at a very small club...my friends and I were dancing so close to him we could smell his cologne^^! Those were the days!!

AAhhh! The best part of the Beach Boys are their harmonies! The link between The Beach Boys and John Stamos came while John was playing the bad boy on General Hospital. Some of his rabid fans were chasing him at a Beach Boys concert and he had nowhere to run but up onto the stage where the Beach boys were about to do an encore. Carl asked if he knew how to play an instrument. he said he could play the drums so they let him play. They have been friends ever since.

John Stamos has performed in concert with The Beach Boys, dating back to 1985 & on the TV Show "Full House" . He sang lead vocals on a new version of "Forever"written and sung by Dennis Wilson(RIP). Stamos ultimately became an honorary member of the band and has toured with the group many times over the past three decades.

I remember hotty John Stamos playing drums for The Beach Boys back in the 80’s, he fit right in and you could tell he was honored to be a part of the group when he could. The Beach Boys also made an appearance on Full House and they performed. The Beach Boys were without a drummer when their brother Dennis died early in life. Since then Carl has died too so only Brian is left out of the 3 Wilson brothers and Mike Love is still alive and I think Al is still alive. Brian however doesn’t perform with The Beach Boys and hasn’t for a few decades. My favorite song they sing is In My Room. ❤
