Cerne Abbas in Dorset had at one time 14 pubs for a population of only 1,160 why did they have so many and why do they now only have 3?
Brewing in Cerne Abbas has gone on since the 13th century but in those days the beer was very different to that of today. Recently a new craft brewery Cerne Abbas Brewery has opened up run by Vic and Jodie. Vic explains how the beer is brewed on a farm on the edge of the village using the water of the river Cerne.

I started brewing in 1973, and became a commercial brewer in 1988, all because I wanted to duplicate the beers of England and Europe. But nowadays I’m a bit jaded. Everyone keeps reinventing the wheel, and American beers are just a race to see who can brew the oddest, most outrageous, and hoppiest beer.
@itskarl7575
@itskarl7575 Жыл бұрын
The same thing is going on in Europe too, if it's any consolation. Of course you still have the traditional brands, but there are innumerable micro breweries who all want to be special. I don't see it as a bad thing, necessarily, it's fun to try something new, but it is rare that I _return_ to any of those new ones.

@@itskarl7575 Thanks, yeah. My criterion for a good beer is one that makes me want a second one. That’s what I would always say when being interviewed, but the interviewers hated that answer. And that’s the thing with the proliferation of “weird” beers. Nothing wrong with them per se, but I don’t want another one. No session beers. And once you’ve drunk a very hoppy beer you’re not able to taste a different one.

@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker We run MAD Mowers just up the road at Stockwood. So several times a year we are driving through Cerne to collect or drop off a mower. It is a very beautiful village. Maybe one day I will take time to visit as a tourist. Thanks again. looking forward to your next video.

@@AndrewDrapper I don't think I know Stockwood but Mad Mowers sounds interesting. I am filming button making this weekend in Sherborne but that will not be edited straight away as I want to do New Forest Toys next. This is about a factory in the new Forest that made wooden toys right up to the war. They were very popular and sold all over the world. The odd thing is hardly anyone has ever heard of them.

@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker I look forward to the button video. My father lives in Sherborne so we will be there Sunday afternoon for our weekly coffee together. Hugh, Jen and I met in Dorset so thought we would have a break down in Cerne two or three miles from where we used to live. Just outside Cerne we stumbled on the brewery so decided to make a film on it. Had lots of fun doing making it and finding the people who would do the pieces to camera. Remember filmmaking is what I have always done since just after leaving school so I only know the way I was taught in TV.

Yes they are a lot over here in UK also and the beer is very popular. Over the years the big breweries have taken over the pubs and therefore controlling the market. They have also sold many pubs off to supermarkets who turn them into express stores. It was therefore great to see Vic and Jodie bringing back the art of beer making which had been dead since the late 1800’s in Cerne.
