A tent without a floor reminds me of when I was in the Army a long time ago. At that time the U.S. military was using a shelter half (a piece of canvas that you would snap together with a buddies shelter half) no floor. During training we spent a solid week in the field (camping out). During this period it rained almost every day. If you pitched that shelter half and didn't dig a run off ditch around it and bank soil up around the tent you got very wet every night. I never had to go out in the winter, but I can imagine what it was like to be below freezing with a "fresh" breeze running through the tent.

Silicone for the air mattress repair. Bunnings. Look for Selleys 25 year. Comes in white, black, clear. Soap water sprayer to find the hole. Marker it then rag dry. Circle silicone on with the corking gun tip. 360 deg in both directions. Size of a flat pea. 24hrs later you won’t get it off with out ripping the mattress. Never through a air mattress out again. Saves land fill. Wish everyone knew/ could be bothered. Swear by it👍

🫶🫶🫶 What you do! Here's a tip... to prevent blisters... wear a pair of thin, light polyester socks over your cotton or wool socks... it allows your foot to slip and slide inside the boot and not take it out on your skin! The Cotton/Wool sock helps keep your foot warm and wicks the moisture away ... and the polyester as an extra layer keeps the friction down... did I mention I 🫶🫶🫶 what you do! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

I just use those extra large fabric bandaids on my heels before I leave if I know I'm likely to blister up. They work a treat. I think you are better off having snug boots otherwise you risk ankle injuries. Each to their own I suppose.

Love the quality of all your content Scotty. You constantly inspire me to get out there more. With regards to footwear in the high country, my favourite method is boots for ankle support and snake protection and for water crossings, cheap $5 Croc style footwear from BigW or Kmart stored on the outside of my pack. They weigh 250g, don't absorb any water and can be used around camp with socks on. Also good for when you get blisters.

As always, thank you for sharing your adventures. I really resonated with your comment about the fall, which is without question, for me, the best time to be in the back country! I'm Canadian, and like you folks on the other side of the world we are truly blessed with huge expanses of forests and fields that seem to fill up with adventurers in the summer, then go quiet again in the fall. Here, "fall" is September through November, lol. Hope those heels healed up nicely, man that did not look like fun. Take care, and better luck next time with the trout ...

Hey Scotty, fantastic videos off such beautiful country, thanks for doing the hard slog for all of us to appreciate the Snowy Mountains, from our armchair... Hi Scotty, absolutely love your adventures, as for the blisters the two sock system is the go, the cool max toe socks or a synthetic against your skin, then the wool sock as the out, being diferent materials they glide over each other taking the friction from the skin!! As for the river crossings a pair of Crocs might be the go, also good when hanging around camp in the afternoon/evening! keep up the great work!!!!

Never wear new socks straight out of the shop. Wash them at least twice, if not more, as they seem to put some serious fabric softener in them which makes them slippery. Slippery socks=blisters.

Hey Scotty, looks like you've had plenty of advice already but my two cents regarding foot care: -Obviously well worn in boots are best. -I carry 'hikers wool' which is essentially some loose bits of wool that you can tear off and use for padding on rub spots. You have to use it before or as soon as you notice any rub spot like between toes or on the heel. Stops blisters happening at all. Life changing. -The other thing I carry in the first aid kit is purpose made blister dressings, there are a lot of opinions of using certain tapes but tape can make blisters worse. I just get the stuff from the chemist, brand is 'compeed' and try to put them on before a blister gets bad. -Also carry a bit of paracetamol and ibuprofen so you can dull the foot pain on the walk out. -Foot care is really important and if you're with a group it should be encouraged that people stop and address rub spots and blisters even if it means holding everyone up.

I bought a pack of wonderfully thick soft socks for my work boots recently. By the end of the day, when I got home, my heels were totally white. It was a huge patch of skin that came off. For sure fishing isn’t shopping. With that bright sun, it’s good to try and get into undercut banks, or banks with over hanging growth. Get a fly close, throw a down stream mend and let it straitened out, and if done right it should, maybe, hopefully, swing right under the bushes into the shade. Oh, and for the rivers just get a pair of Crocks or some other very lightweight slipper. Even trail runners and socks take time to dry. If you get trail runners too, then the weight savings in those will make up for the slippers.

love that part of the world. Everywhere you look is just beautiful scenery. I too struggled with the fishing, but by April those trout have seen more flies than a tackle shop owner in the last few months. 🤣Xmas, through Easter etc. Also the scrub on the banks gets so frustrating I end up wading a lot... until I get frustrated with slipping A over T on the slippery rocks. 😂Still worth it, lol.

Get yourself some “coolmax” wicking liner socks to wear under “bridgedale” heavy hiking socks, no more blister problems. Also invest in a pair of lightweight “ croks” for water crossings, and there great around camp after getting your boots off ( weigh nothing clipped on to the pack ) I used to carry a small roll of straight elastoplas for heal and foot hot spots, without any wadding, when pulled off removes the blister skin quickly.

Scott, if you want a good compromise between boots and the Trail Runners, have a look at the Salomon Mid GTX. I use these when I need a bit more physical protection from knocks. The downside is if you are walking off trail, they do get nicks which will compromise the waterproofness. I use the Salomon Speedcross for most hunting/hiking trips. But if on the tops and needing extra ankle protection the MidGTX are nice. Two pairs of sock everytime!

Trail runners are the best! I hike with them in snow, the key is extra thick Merino socks. Even when the wool is wet your feet will still keep relatively warm Grab some Topo Pursuits and get a size up to accommodate socks Wear a Injinji toe sock liner made of merino under the main thick sock If you do get a blister then Leukotape is by faaar the best strapping, get it on as soon as you have a hotspot Keep up the good work!!

Sorry, again: Use Micropore tape on the soft spots for the first day or so out when you haven't walked for a while until the skin toughens up. Prevents the blisters from occurring. Also good sox critical. Micropore tape is great on blisters that haven't shredded, and often will prevent them from shredding as it provides another layer of 'skin'. We felt your pain when you showed us those heels.... ouch.

Can't help you with the feet. I can help with the fish. In my experience if the air is getting as cold as it seemed fishing a hopper in the morning is a waste of time. Wait until the sun is good and up and the bugs are starting to move from the warmth. I would have started with a nymph under an indicator or just fished off the leader. Flip some rocks and look for any bugs in the river then match the size and color you find with whatever you have in your boxes. Some rivers have enough information online so you can skip this step. But it's always fun to challenge yourself to identify the little creepy crawlies

I was just about to leave a comment with almost identical suggestions to improve the fishing success, but you've saved me the trouble Paul! 🤠 It's great that Scotty's out there giving it a go, but I'd also recommend Scotty gets some (more?) time with an experienced flyfisher or even a guide - there's so much to learn and he can improve his success rates dramatically and avoid getting disheartened and possibly losing interest as a result.
