DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

Been looking for a good way to monitor the dog water bowl level. Great video plan to do all three of these!

Oh man, that wire hanging down in the shot of your toe kick lighting is an off the charts OCD trigger! 😂

Ha! I was wondering if anyone would notice that. I got the wire hidden again. It’s one of those things you can’t see unless you’re down on the floor like I was for that photo. I’ll be showing the install of those LED lights in an upcoming video

Keep up the excellent videos! Glad you took over. I love your practical approach. I work in heavy industry, we automate everything (obviously). Point level switches are awesome (basically what you are doing here). Many many more applications available (on/off detection; open/closed; etc). Good luck!

Great tips I never thought of. I didn’t realize you could just leave a probe submerged more or less indefinitely.

With the water sensor sitting on and in the salt/water in the softner doesn't the sensor corrode quickly?

I guess we’ll find out together! I’ve had it there for less than a year but no issue so far. It’s not actually sitting in the water long and I thoroughly dry it every time it reaches the brine before I set it back on the salt pile.

thanks! Maybe the contacts are made of a corrosion resistant metal. But it is a great idea. Actually I am looking at water in my tank now but still has some salt. I remember when they were 80 pound bags.@@DIYSmartHomeGuy1

Are there any smart outlet that only give you power information and don't turn things on and off? I want it for my server and I don't want to accidently turn if off which I have done once already.

I don't think this is what you're asking for, but it is what I found amzn.to/3EnqkOk The problem is that any smart plug that would be associated with an app is meant to automate on/off. Power monitoring is a side benefit (in the eyes of the manufacturer). That being said, we are waiting on the new lineup of Zooz power modules. Traditionally Zooz has provided parameters to Disable App Control and to Disable Local Control. If their new switches provide this, it would do the trick. Best bet would be to hit the Zooz community site and ask them if they have that plan. Cheers

Tell us Your favorite alternate use for a leak sensor. We'll add them here to keep the run going: 1. Water softener salt level 2. De-humidifier water level 3. Pet water bowl empty Others... 4. Swimming Pool Water Level - for pools with auto-fill to know if the fill valve breaks in the open or closed position. (Wrap the sensor in a plastic bag and zip tie to the cover)

I tried using the ecolink water sensors to start & stop my sump pump. This didn't work because once the sensor gets wet, it stays wet for a long time causing the sump pump to run for a long long time. This is also true with smartthings water sensors and the sensor that comes with the Zooz Titan water valve operator. All my sensors need to be hand dried once they get wet. Also, the probes on the ecolink sensors tend to rust when left wet.

Interesting; I've not had that experience. Might have to do with the orientation? If the sensor is sitting on a flat surface any lingering water could bridge the two contacts.
