I’m unfamiliar with this gadget. Can you explain what it does when the door opens? Does it sound an alarm or a single beep tone? I didn’t hear the end result in the video after the installation was demonstrated.

You pair it with your hub to trigger whatever automation you can think off. Lights, heating, welcome message, etc..

I wonder if my hollow interior doors have enough solid material at the top to embed a sensor in... I'd hate to cut a massive hole and then have the sensor just fall into the door.
@DIYSmartHomeGuy13 күн бұрын
I have hollow interior doors, too. To keep the sensor from falling in, I use the same little plastic tab made in the video and stapled the tabs to the top of the door to create a little cradle for the sensor
@chazw3xКүн бұрын
If you're using the sensor only as a door chime, the top of the door is fine. For best break in notification it's best to put the sensor in the lower portion of the door about 12 to 18 inches from the bottom. If someone kicks in your door they'll most likely kick the bottom and not the top.
@Cybernetic_Systems4 күн бұрын
Or you could just use the Aeotec recessed contact sensors that are designed to be embedded in your doors to start with. You just drill a 20mm hole in the side of the door and the door frame and you are done. My wife loves them cause she can’t see them.

Great idea! Did you connect the Zooz directly to the Homey hub or a separate Zwave hub?
@DIYSmartHomeGuy13 күн бұрын
I have it connected to Hubitat because I’m testing the zwave LR for an upcoming video. But it can connect directly to the homey using the regular zwave.

They have a Zwave recessed door/window sensor on Amazon "Zwave Door Sensor Aeotec Recessed Door Sensor". I only use Zigbee so this is not an option for me, although I do have a few Zigbee chips that I may try to make one. Great video! My wife is not a fan of redoing things like that:-(

To be honest, with the little tabs I put on the sensor to get them in and out, it's actually easier to replace the batteries on these than the ones that are stuck to the door

What I see with the thieves at our place is they often move quickly, this sets up motion blur and they can't be identified. It's really important to have a system that doesn't have the blurring issues and it usually means buying a top shelf product.

Pete, I had to leave your live stream early, but in a sub-comment here, I wanted to share more detail on LoRa… YoLink, an American vendor, leverages LoRa technology in their extensive range of smart home devices, offering distinct advantages over other protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth: 1. Range: YoLink’s LoRa-enabled devices provide significantly longer range (up to 10 km), surpassing the shorter ranges of Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. This is ideal for large properties and outdoor applications. 2. Power Consumption: YoLink devices are designed for low power consumption, making them ideal for battery-operated devices that need to operate for long periods. This efficiency outperforms Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in similar applications. 3. Network Topology: YoLink uses a simple star topology, where devices communicate directly with a central gateway, simplifying network setup and maintenance compared to the mesh topologies of Zigbee and Z-Wave. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth also use star topologies but with different range and power characteristics. 4. Scalability: YoLink’s ecosystem supports thousands of devices within a single network, making it highly scalable for large-scale deployments. This scalability is superior to the hundreds of devices supported by Zigbee and Z-Wave, and the limited capacity of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. 5. Interference and Reliability: YoLink operates in sub-GHz frequency bands, which are less crowded and prone to interference than the 2.4 GHz band used by Zigbee and Bluetooth. This results in more reliable performance, particularly in environments with many competing signals. Z-Wave also uses sub-GHz bands but can vary by region. 6. Data Rate: YoLink devices, leveraging LoRa technology, have low data rates suitable for small, infrequent transmissions. This is in contrast to the moderate rates of Zigbee and Z-Wave, the high rates of Wi-Fi, and the varying rates of Bluetooth. 7. Cost: YoLink offers cost-effective solutions, with lower deployment and maintenance costs due to low power and long range capabilities. Initial gateway costs may be higher, but overall expenses are competitive with or lower than Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth devices are generally low to moderate in cost but don’t offer the same range or scalability as YoLink. Breadth of Smart Home Devices YoLink boasts a comprehensive range of smart home devices, including but not limited to: • Sensors: Door/window sensors, motion sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, water leak sensors. • Smart Plugs and Switches: For controlling various electrical devices and lighting. • Security Devices: Smart locks, cameras, and alarm systems. • Environmental Control: Thermostats and smart irrigation controllers. Ease of Availability YoLink products are readily available through various channels, including major online retailers like Amazon, as well as their own website. This ease of availability ensures that consumers can conveniently purchase and expand their smart home systems. Overall, YoLink’s extensive product lineup, leveraging the advantages of LoRa technology, offers enhanced range, power efficiency, reliability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Combined with the ease of availability, YoLink presents a robust and accessible solution for smart home enthusiasts looking to set up or expand their systems.
