I remember changing a water pump on a G20 van along the road with a couple of wrenches and a pair of pliers. Those days are long gone with these sideways engines. Still not horrible but I'd rather not start this job in the driveway with a deadline! This engine is not too bad to service in a Tacoma as long as you don't want to pull the timing cover. The oil pump configuration makes it impossible with the front diff in the truck. From one old guy to another, thanks for posting.

Amazing how many people think their hands are torque wrenches . They get away with it for most jobs but it’s going to catch up to them. It’s like roller skating down the expressway. You can get away with it for a while but then luck runs out. I’ve been a technician from the late 70s seen it. Also people that have a torque spec of say 80ft pounds they go straight to 80 instead of increments of 1/3 . Like 30-60-80ft

I like kenny ! Makes mistakes, always takes responsibility if he has boobed. But he's thorough, safety conscious, passes on any gems of experience experience and knowledge. Most important of all, he's as honest as the day is long. Would really have liked to have met him. But I live in the not so greatBrittain, ripoff at every opportunity and smile while they're doin it. That's why, with people like Kenny to refer to , I do it me bloody self. Fortunately I I'm a fairly good home mechanic, learned from folks like kenny and by mistakes, very few I might add, and no matter how difficult a job, sit and think it through, don't rush. And above all never give . The euphoria when you've successfully completed the task and it works is well worth the tedium you've gone through. That one nut and or bolt that some leave out cuz it got the better of them is a no no.

The newer generation is harder than that. Youre supposed to jack up the engine with a block of wood on the pan, take out the thermostat, remove/loosen the lower mounts, remove the hose that goes to the radiator, drain the coolant. When you jack the engine up and remove the upper mount, you then have access to all the water pump bolts. Toyota service information wants you to take the engine out. With the newer generation 2GR, the ABS module is in the way and you can't jack the engine up at all.

Grey sealer is a non hardening type, if it is the original. You really need to use a non hardening sealer when putting them back, especially as those bolts will otherwise corrode themselves into the block. Loctite makes a white thread sealer that works really well there, and Yamaha has in the boating side a really good sealer as well, that also does not harden either. Loctite 565, 567 or 577 is the go to stuff to use there, after cleaning the old gunk off the bolts and washing the holes out. Used one depends if you want it to seal only, hold and seal or hold pressure and seal. All 3 are easy to remove, and all 3 tend to stay pliable in the hole and thread as well

@@WrenchingWithKenny Every 2gr I've ever worked on you can unbolt the passenger engine mount to do this job. Lift the engine using a floor jack on the oil pan, bring it up until the intake plenum is touching the cowl. You can do the rest of the job from the engine bay. I've noticed on high mileage vehicles sometimes you have to unbolt the front engine mount as well to get things moving. Once you've done a couple this job is doable in less than 2 hours. Love the videos I always learn something

I got the job done on my 2008 Rav4 but it took me and my sister 4 days and a total of 35 hours to complete. Just look at the difficulty Kenny was having. It took Kenny 2 days to complete this job with the vehicle on a lift and a lifetime of automotive expertise.
