So, I watched Fit to Fat to Fit and I thought it would be interesting to break it down and learn from it - I know it's a controversial one, so I'm keen to read your comments on your thoughts!

I have such mixed feelings on this show. Obviously it’s not good to gain as fast as they do but for some of them it has really been eye opening. However, you could just empathically listen to overweight people when they tell you about their struggles, but that doesn’t make for good tv, I guess.

I hear ya! Definitely some bits are dramatized for ratings, other bits feel very honest - it's an interesting one!

I haven’t watched the video yet, but just the title of the show makes me feel like it’s pushing the “it’s not as hard as you make it out to be” vibe… being overweight for a few months is not comparable to being that way for many years or even a lifetime imo. Maybe I’ll change my mind after the video 🤷‍♀️

I think you should review supersize vs superskinny next, it has a similar concept to this show, where they show that both sides of the spectrum are unhealthy and just because you look thin, that doesn't mean you're fit or a healthy eater. It's not perfect and some aspects are problematic but it's still informative. Just like the trainers, some of the skinny people truly lacked empathy and thought that they magically couldn't gain weight, but it wasn't until they show them how much they're eating that they truly realise how tiny their portions are, and how most of them were addicted to caffeine which helped shrink their appetite. The participants had to switch diets for a few days, they even sometimes go through their pictures to kind of see where their trauma and eating habits stemmed from, they sometimes include exercise and cooking classes but not always. They went back home with a healthy eating plan for a few months before a weigh in and they never restricted their calories too much. I really liked it even though a lot of the advice given was a bit outdated and they were some segments in the show that were super problematic

You read my mind :) I have a video coming up on part of this show but more than happy to do an in-depth review if people think it’s helpful ☺️♥️

Gotta say the concept of the show is wild, because of the short time frame. I think putting the trainers into fat suits and letting them experience how fuller bodied people are treated in society would help with gaining sympathy. Looking at the trainers after the gaining weight phase you can still these how muscular they are. So the will not be treated the same as their clients.

@Rachel Forshee I do have to agree that expierencing the food and its consequences are important points, too. Maybe a combiantion? There are soo many factors in how the life of the trainers and their clients differ. Or one could try a bonding experience that does not rely on food and exercise.

omg yeah i watched an episode of this and found this concept so stupid. they tried to spin it as the coaches gaining this fat somehow helps the participant? like "hey i gained all this weight so we can lose it together" and the participant was really moved by it. I'd be like "uhm... you didn't have to? your weight literally has nothing to do with my body so how should this help me lol"

They made the participants clean their pantry because they don’t know anything about nutrition and the process of changing a lifestyle. They’re just coaches or fit people, not nutritionists 😫

No matter how much I drink I won't become addicted to alcohol. I can drink for 4 months and then "try" to become sober? How does that make me empathize with someone for whom alcohol addiction is a disease? Edit: misspelling.

I'm curious about your thoughts: do you think the trainers would be able to truly gain empathy and understand their clients better after partaking in this challenge?

They might associate binging with being obese, causing them to view obese people as constant eaters. So probably not

I think it depends on where they started on the issue and whether they lack empathy in general. Some trainers get into the business to flaunt an ego and feel big, completely pushing aside their clients needs & wants. Some of these trainers just seem apathetic to the problems people have when they're overweight or obese bc of emotional eating & how depression/anxiety/other health conditions play into weight loss. I have fibromyalgia and on the road to getting diagnosed I got some MRIs of my spine to see what was causing my back pain. I've had a spine surgeon tell me "if you had a 6pack you probably wouldnt hurt as much". Like, no shit Sherlock. Of course life would be easier if I was fit. My problem is moving & light exercising is painful as fuck. I need to manage the pain TO get in shape, not the other way around. After he said that I shut down & stopped talking and just left. Some people are just like that. Unable to imagine himself in horrendous chronic pain, he imagines himself just powering through when that's not the issue most of the time. For me, my trauma tells me I don't even deserve to be happy and healthy so I've very sensitive to negativity & it can easily send me spiraling. No insurance rn so no therapist or doctor visits. Fun times.

@@gabbyb9418 Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I'm sorry you went through that with a doctor... if it helps please remember that diet is 80% of fitness and health, so if you can enjoy yummy, nutritious foods it not only can help you stay as healthy as possible physically, but psychologically it's being increasingly shown that it also helps with mental health and well-being (see nutritional psychiatry from the video!). My biggest, warmest wishes to you, I hope you improve and yes, you do deserve to be as happy and healthy as possible 🙏💖

In the one episode I sat through, the trainer overworked her client the first day and he got injured. (13:15) She later admitted she never trained anyone of his size (400 pounds) before. The guy obviously didn't want to finish the show but was obligated to, and put in no effort. I would hope the trainer has learned better techniques since then. The comments on that episode were...interesting. The trainer was pretty and lots of people said she was still cute 40 pounds overweight and she was a great person who just wanted to help. The overweight guy was basically characterized as a worthless fat f*** who should go kill himself. 😕 So I don't know if the trainers are learning empathy, but the audience sure isn't.

As a fat person, I find this really condescending. I’m not fat just because of diet and lifestyle, or even mostly because of diet and lifestyle. It’s genetic and disability influenced, even for my disabilities, I’m still very active proportionately. Plus my disabilities get a lot worse when I try to lose weight. (Don’t ask, but I’m not dying to weigh 50 lbs less.) This feels very victim blame-y, like reinforcing how it’s “just” laziness. The idea that fat is a choice or must be a result of trauma or eating disorders… it’s a lot.

I like your videos. I don't like how you (& many other KZfaqrs) never put any of the accountability for weight gain on the fat person. I've gained weight & lost it. It has everything to do with my own mindset and how much I wanted it. Thinking about losing weight is not the same as doing something about it. It SO much easier to not even try and "start tomorrow" There is absolutely a "being lazy" about the entire thing that kept me fat.
let's stop telling people to diet for their wedding.
