This is my "they're being stubborn today" go-to. Kind of surprised you don't use the wacky rig as more of a slow moving search bait. I do the same as you with letting it sink to the bottom first, but I've caught many a bass (especially on days when they're fickle) by gently jigging it 2-3 times and then letting it sink again during the retrieve, rinse and repeat. Fall, lift lift lift, fall, lift lift lift, fall etc. Covers a lot more water and can get reaction bites. In fact I've caught more during such a retrieve than on the initial fall. Worth a shot when they're being picky!

The timing of your video is perfect for me. I’m a walleye guy but I’m in south Florida fishing largemouth with Senko worms for the winter. My go to rig has been a 2500 Daiwa BG series reel, 7’ fast action rod, and 10 lb yellow braid with a 10 lb mono leader. I’ve found the hi-vis braid critical to maximizing my hookups. Fishing a slack line is opposite of my walleye experience, so it took probably a half dozen missed fish before I figured it out. Thanks for the great video.

Those Florida bass are so dark!!! We have the typical green tiger striped ones up here. I've only thrown a whacky a few times and never had luck, so I'm going to have to try this green braid trick after seeing it in action.

VMC makes a pair of pliers for wacky rig, plus a custom o ring that allows your hook to never go through the bait. Look up VMC Crossover pliers, it will come with 3 or 4 of their o rings with it and give a try. I like it because the hook runs parallel with the senko. So you can simply insert a shroom weight, turn the hook in the o ring and go instantly to ned style. I keep these pliers in my pocket now. I got the crossover o rings in one side of handle, reg o rings in other. I save alot of plastic, multiple fish on same worm and hook is never in it

Yum Dingers work like magic. Maybe I'll give Stickos or Yamamotos a try. I like to keep it all braid, as knots can cause some issues. I can get one to last all day. I use some plastic shrink tubing to keep mine on rather than an o ring.

I just subscribed🤙 My favorite whacky hook is the Mustad in-line demon circle hook 1/0. Imho it has a much higher hook up ratio. It is pretty weedless, and works pretty well as a drop shot hook too. Also cost isn’t too bad if bought in bulk. I agree on the plastics, but would add Zoom’s stick bait to that list for sure.

I use the exact same hook, works Fantastic!!!! I do use some Solerez Resin to help make the weedguard stronger so it won't loosen up, cause after a few fish the weedguard starts to spin or break but not any more! I do the whole pk of hooks like this!

Bro those VMC Neko hooks are so good for wacky rig it’s literally the only hook I use now since trying them a couple years ago. Great advice man and I agree with the bait selections as well. The 6th sense clout is my favorite option when using a weighted wacky hook like the jig style hook it makes it sink perfect with that added weight from the jig head. I use an 1/8 or 3/16 ounce weedless jig for that application. If your going weightless the senko or bass pro is the best one for sure

I mostly agree with the wacky rig tips. I almost always use a 5 or 6” green pumpkin senko. I found the Mustad wacky o-rings with the black ring that has circle at the top for the hook keep my bait much longer than traditional o rings or hooking thru the worm and they are worth the investment. In addition, I use the Gamakatsu G Finesse Jig Head Wacky Hook Size 1/0-1/16 oz head and it has made all the difference to my hookup and land rate. The VMC cross-over rings are also great ways to keep Senkos on

I use a black max bait caster. I have tried braided line but prefer mono. I was sceptical the first time i tried a wacky rig but boy does it work. Problem in East Texas is everything strikes this thing. I even caught an alligator garr, you don’t want these because they are like swimming chain saws. I catch fish to eat so I want them just big enough to fillet.

That’s what I use either the vmc or Trokar neko hooks mostly trokar field and streams has a kit of trokar it’s a wacky neko kit $20 bucks comes with everything you need weights oring tool and a few sizes of hooks since I switched I landed so many more fish

BPS Stik-O's are THE DEAL!!! I'm going to try the Ozark Trails (Walmart brand) stick baits this year. BTW, use two O-Rings, criss-cross the rings, and slip your hook under the X made by the rings.

I totally see your point on the lime-colored line. However, here in California, these deep canyon lakes, some that are crystal clear are very particular when it comes to line. I fished Maxima for years, swore by it, told everyone else was they were crazy for not using it. My buddy years back told me to use flouro or get off the boat. Grant you he's my best friend, crazy marine. I heeded his advice and switched. What a difference. It was like night and day. I guess why I was so skeptical was because when braid first came out, it was an eyelet eater. Killed 2 of my Loomis rods. Grant you now, most quality line guides are ceramic now. I guess I'm a grumpy old man (49). Get off my lawn! Haha...great video Nathan. Do you pour your own baits? If you don't, it's time to!

Good stuff Nathan! One bait that has worked for me when using a wacky rig is the Zoom 4" finesse worm. I've watched it sink and the ends flap like a bird flapping it's wings. Caught over 100 bass on that technique years ago. Yes, it's light and requires a dead calm day but, if you find they wont take the larger stick bait, try the Zoom 4" Finesse worm sometime! BTW, I switched to those Neko hooks and, they haven't failed me. If the weed guard isn't an impediment, I'll switch to those from the open hook ones.

If just starting out, use a 5” Senko (Most popular color is Green Pumpkin). Get the size 2, size 1 or 1/0 weedless VMC hooks recommended. Go cheaper on the plastics once you gain confidence on the “how”, “where” and such. Skipping the Wacky Worm on the cast can generate strikes. Try “pop up” casts where you find the first drop off or grass line edge and cast as high as possible and let the Senko “splash” on the landing. I have even taken a small rock and tossed to an edge, got the “splash” and then immediately make a cast right yo that same spot. I caught three in a row using three small rocks to prove it to a Friend once! Always watch your line. I use WHITE Berkeley Nano-fil 10lb. 30% of my strikes are by “line watching”. Suggest using an “O” Ring, VMC Worm Ring or a small piece of shrink tubing on the worm so the Senko will last longer. Before rigging, roll the worm in your fingers to take out the shine and, if using Green Pumpkin, roll the thinnest part through your fingers and it will turn slightly chartreuse. Be well.

I always use a hi-vis yellow main line for finesse fishing like this. Especially in cold water. When it's hard to feel the bite watching the yellow line makes it so much easier. Stik-Os also a good cheaper alternative. Although a normal wacky hook usually works fine for me but I think I will try a longer shank. Thanks for sharing all the good info.

I throw the octopus hooks for pretty much everything, and they've worked for catfish, pickerel, trout, and of course bluegill, but the longer shank tip for bass really seems to be a game changer.

I am in the wacky hook camp. It my have something to do with Hooksett styles or fish landing techniques. I rarely boat flip any anything over 2lbs. and play the fish like it's on 8lb test cause it is.

I have a lot of issues with the weed guard on those hooks of the line wrapping up around it and hook sept being affected I’ve noticed most all fish I lost the line was wrapped around u under weed guard I went to the regular neko hardly loose or miss any yes I get more weeds n snag more but it’s a trade off

Thanks Nathan. Sorry you had to go to the senko in Florida but you do what you have to. Ever throw the 6' down there? There is alot of negativity towards the wacky hooks I can't figure. I have seen small circle hooks catch 6' shark. That being said I do not use them exclusively and have tried the weedless VMC. Good hook but if I am throwing around wood the Gamagatsu finesse weedless is less likely to hang up and a much better hook. Expensive hook but it really is that good. You are so right about yellow braid to leader, it's almost like bobber fishing. I use about 8' to 10' leader and take a black sharpie to about 6' of the braid.

I use the VMC nikko hooks also because I like the long shank.. One of the problems with the small octopus hooks is also that the fish can engulf the whole thing and get gut hooked . It doesn't seem to happen with longer shank hooks

Using these hooks this past weekend in a tournament , with 30 minutes to go I jumped off a 3 1/2 pounder on a VMC wacky hook. On inspection of the rig after the hook was sprung open alot.......alot. Before you say anything 12lb test on a Dobyns 734 no over kill on the setup. Bad hooks straight up!

I use 20-30 pound braid for all of my bass fishing. I never worry about breaking off on a fish and I outcatch everyone else on our local lake. I think the requirement of a fluorocarbon leader is way over-rated.

I have to agree about the leader....Fluoro in general is overrated & too pricey...I'm mostly mono, with a combo or 2 with braid for a couple techniques.....Mono is underrated these days & is much better than people think...the stretch factor is way overrated, for bass fishing

Seems like the line tip is basically fishing like your using a fly rod with no strike indicator. Works great, never thought of doing it with my bass fishing setups though.

Great video. You know what’s weird though, I have completely different results on our Colorado bass fisheries. I tried the Gary Senko, the bass pros, and some other fat ones like zoom and others. Turns out on the waters I fish, mostly clear and grassy, I have to downsize the worm diameter and length. I’ll catch almost nothing on the OG senko, but slaughter them with yum dingers and some other smaller 4-5” worms. Could be people just pressure these waters way too much here with senkos, so simply giving the bass a different look works.

Typically you don't use any weights on a wacky rig. The worm has enough weight to sink itself and the slow fall gives it time to do its action

@@diablocell thanks. I felt a 5’ senko was barely sinking at all for the amount of time it’s out there so I bought some weighted hooks and it seemed to really help

what about using a Wacky rig , in a river with slow to medium current, seems like the worm would just drift and it would be hard to detect a strike ???

Wacky rigging is definitely a fun way to catch ‘em. Especially on the light tackle. When I take out people who don’t really fish, I set them up with wacky rigs. Unfortunately, the 2 clubs I used to belong to should have been called “wacky bass club”. That’s all everyone ever used. People would literally show up with 6 rods rigged with different size and color senkos. It was frustrating and brainless if u ask me. I really didn’t want to join the trend so I wound up quitting the clubs.

Great video! But, at 6:53 in the video you are a bit wrong. There's no way that 50lb fluoro weed gard will help prevent that bass from shaking the hook off. Those are excellent hooks. I buy and use them. They work with hydrilla and similar weeds. Wood, branches ... not that good. But, these are the best Wacky, Neko hooks made.

I fish a shallow lake and the Yum Dinger seems to get hit more often than the Senko.

I use Yum 5" Dingers. Watermelon w/red flake, Bama Bug, Ghilie suit, and Black w/blue flake colors work well for me. 10lb braid, 3/0 Wide gap worm hook, 6ft Shakespeare Ugly Stick medium action rod. Shakespeare 1000 reel....some gave it to me years ago and I never bothered researching the specs on it 😂. BUT I do catch bass in clear or murky waters with YUM. Ive used Gary Yamamoto and Googans and had less success but to each his own and its fishing😂

I’m right there with you. I’ve been wacky worm fishing for about 15 years now. I’ve tried them all and the yum dinger has been my best bait by far. I did a test at a honey hole I fish and did it with the Yamamoto senko and the Berkeley power bait. And the yum dinger beat them both with ease. It was literally 5 to 1 not to mention the bait lasted longer than both the other baits put together.
