I'm from South Africa. We have 2, maybe 3 groupings of Yellowtail (Kingfish) along our Coastline which differ in size and spawn at different times. The West Coast Kingies are smaller, ranging between 2 and 6Kg with the occasional one over 10Kg, but generally 3 to 4.5Kg is the average for this grouping. On the East Coast the Yellowtail group is on average much bigger, also ranging from a few kilos but up to around the 20Kg mark, Kingies over 20kg are less common although they are around but not many are caught and less so from terra firma. I don't know of any Kingies here above 22/24Kg, I personally haven't caught any that size, only heard of them. Almost appears as if you guys there can catch Kingies along most of your NZ Coastline, whereas in South Africa the land based fishing for Kingies is done at a few select spots only. My favourite fishing is land based Yellowtail fishing with spinners and plugs, the thrill takes a lot to beat. So much enjoying your videos, thanks for posting. Pound for pound, hard to beat a Kingie for a good fight on rod and tackles, especially from the shore.

I always found 3hrs each side of low was the best time for kingies off the rocks. About right looking at the kelp on that awesome ledge your fishing .Used to fish off the Cape Henderson bay, MVD, Spirits camping some amazing locations and fishing

What a catch! Here in southern California either of those last two fish would be most people's personal best. The California state record for yellowtail is only 62 pounds, although they get a little bigger south of the border.
