OMG I decided to take a dog free to a good home. He jumped constantly. I had to fold my arms and turn my back on him for a couple of weeks and correct the pulling when walking. I swear he'd just been left on a chain his entire life. By the time I had to re-home him because my leg got bad he was no longer jumping and would like under the table while we had dinner and wait for his. Beautiful doggo but so much work.

My German shepherd lab mix does this so badly…. How long do I need to keep this training up until it becomes ingrained in him?
@DieFarbeLila88

Every dog is different. But german Sheppards are fairly smart and obedient compared to other dogs. Make sure the jumping in itself is not a self rewarding behavior and that will surly shorten the time for the issue to go away.

(First, i would like to say that my English isnt the best, which i apologize for. So please bare with me.) Second, i would like to say how much i love this mix of breed, and my first ever dog was a gsd lab mix. She too was a jumper. Anyway, I would definitely go with what the comment above. It should be a pretty instant results type of thing, especially with a gsd. Like the comment said, they are smart and will catch on the first 1 or 2 corrections, learning it to be unwanted behavior. But will of course need continued, consistent work that will really drive it home. Consistency is key, and although you can nip the behavior in the bud pretty quick, all training will be an ongoing thing. It is very common for us all to think we can do a course of training, and then we will have our dogs programed permanently. No dog is perfect, and will slip up from time to time, and it's those little slip ups that we miss, or just allowed to happen when we've relaxed thinking the training is already done. It only takes one time of this to undo so much of the training that was done. If that makes sense?
@katalinacastanares4602
@katalinacastanares4602 Жыл бұрын
One major thing I want to add to this is to make sure that EVERYONE who interacts with your dog knows your rules and respects your wishes when it comes to how they act towards your dog. All your training can be made to be pointless when you have people who allow your dog to do things you don't want them doing. For instance, I have friends and family who don't mind jumping, and will actually encourage the behavior when they would come over and talk in a high pitch voice, and greeting my dog with too much excitement. It was almost pointless to train my dog out of jumping on anyone but me. She knew better and would never jump on me, but other people would be fair game. Especially when they either don't mind, feel bad about ignoring the dog, or actually encouraging the behavior. It took me setting clear boundaries with them, and even had to tell my sister not to interact at all with my dog for some time when she wouldn't respect the work and time I put into training my dog. She is someone who really anthropomorphizes her pets and allows them to do whatever they wanted and would feel bad for my dog when I didn't allow her to behave badly.

My puppy really only listens to verbal commands. Like, even trying to press on his butt for him to learn the sit position doesn't work. He just goes "ok mommy, why are you touching my booty?" Or if you tell him to heel, he will do it immediately, but if you tug on the leash to get him closer to you, he pulls. Which has caused a lot of fighting in my house because my mom refuses to use verbal cues on walks so he's a monster for her. Apparently I "need to train him better" when in reality, he's a puppy and progressing very, very well imo. He walks just fine with me. I even try to get her involved with the training but nooooo, that's "not her responsibility."

Any suggestions of how to stop cocker spaniel puppy from jumping on the sofa? I’ve been trying your trick observes in other videos and it works to a certain extent but isn’t discouraging the behaviour of jumping up when cooking tea or on the sofa. I refrain from putting him in his pen/crate as don’t want him to associate with this negatively. At the breeders house he was able to jump on everything in sight and were hardly any boundaries so we are undoing a lot of behaviours. He’s 12 weeks old and is able to sit, lie down, roll over, stay and wait perfectly. But the jumping on sofas and up at kitchen units is proving a little more challenging. Thank you! P.S. love your content!

I have a prong collar on my BC I can’t stress the wonders it did for him he stopped pulling quickly, on a slip lead he used to choke himself now he always gives in to the pressure of the HS prong collar he isn’t being choked on his walks anymore and most of the time we never use the collar because he’s always next to me physical correction is the fastest way to tell you dog to cut the shit and he understands 10x more with this collar when I pull on the leash a bit it means to pay attention and look for guidance I also taught leash pressure, I taught them with it for sits and downs so I don’t even have to speak to them for them to understand what I want from them furthermore when you have an reactive dog sometimes another well trained dog is used to correct the dog physically very similar to a prong collar my BC is completely comfortable with the prong collar but hates the head halter and chokes himself on any tightening things

@BoleDaPole
@BoleDaPole Жыл бұрын
That's fine, they will learn that it's not always accompanied by a treat. A " good boy" and pat on the head usually is enough. I'd say give him 1-3 treats per 10 commands Early on though you want to reward them as much as possible.
@BoleDaPole
@BoleDaPole Жыл бұрын
Also he's not always looking up for a treat, most times he's just looking for reassurance and guidance. This is a good thing, it means he looks to you for guidance on what to do next, which is why a pat onnthe head is good enough and it'll let him relax.

Poodles of any size are smart and athletic in my experience. A standard or miniature is my choice because many times you will see a toy with an extremely over crowded mouth. In any case they are all groom dogs because their hair never stops growing. You will want to be prepared for the groom bills unless you are going to cut their hair yourself.

Have you tried just doing a 180 and walk off immediately he jumps up or gets too riled up when meeting strangers (could be your friends/family for practice)? Works like taking a treat away from him - go away, have him sit or something to be calm and reapproach. The second he gets too excited, even before you actually reach the person, turn away and remove him. You could avoid using treats that way - even though you have hopefully solved your issue already haha

How tf are there “behaviorists” that still use punishment based training? You’d think after schooling and getting a certification/ degree you’d understand scientific methods and read up on research into canine behaviour. Time and time again it’s shown punishment based training isn’t half as effective as reward based training. Sure, it might stop a certain behaviour “quickly” but it also doesn’t bring up your dogs confidence, which usually means they won’t handle new situations well and will fall back on the bad behaviour.
@tuscanyiscol
@tuscanyiscol Жыл бұрын
Yeah so I actually did a bit of independent research and tried to find “anything” to back up this often parroted line about science proving this. I mean literally all the positive people (like Victoria Stilwell, who never actually train dogs😅) Cite the ‘science’. But what is the ‘science,? It’s not magic So I went and looked it up, chased up two sources, that supposedly prove scientific consensus and were the ONlY ones I could find cited as proof of the ‘science’ Both were in self published journals with no peer review, and hilariously they featured maybe 40 dogs total, so instead of saying The ‘science’ has proved something, be honest and say you have no idea but you think that an Analysis of 40 dogs in Ohio in 2011 makes you correct . Or please, and I mean this, I will pay you if you can cite any actual science, like a meta study, or anything at all - none of your content creators have ever been able to do it but maybe you can? Otherwise just be honest and say you think it looks mean 😂😂😂😊
@11ozzielover
@11ozzielover Жыл бұрын
@@tuscanyiscol, you guys always want the citations, yet never seem to read them or care much at all about the actual research, so unless you can do the same, I don’t see a reason to share different studies. I’d love to see which articles you found that supposedly show there’s only two studies with just around 40 dogs. We know most aversive training methods came from the infamous “alpha” study, which has been disproven time and time again, even by its original author, who tried his damned best to get it out of people’s heads, but unfortunately never succeeded. This is one of the main reasons why we know aversive training methods aren’t based in science at all. Reward based training isn’t just a dog thing either, which could possibly explain why you couldn’t find as much on the matter. Just looking at humans and horses for example, you can also find current research shows aversive training methods just don’t work as well. Lastly, I used to be someone who believed in aversive training methods. Then I started to learn more and with using reward based training, found the dogs I trained to be much more eager to learn and quicker to understand.
