Robert's grandmother was also a Targaryen. So he did have some claim to the throne, but Viserys had a much stronger claim. But, as Robert said, he's king because he took the throne.

The First Men also came from Essos, thousands of years before the Andals. The First Men came across what was then called the Arm of Dorne, a land bridge that existed between the southwestern most corner of Essos, and Dorne, on the southeastern tip of Westeros. After the First Men came and waged war on the Children of the Forest, the Children used their magic to sink and flood the Arm of Dorne, leaving only the islands now called The Stepstones. They also partially sank and flooded the narrow strip of Westeros between the North and the rest of Westeros called "The Neck", creating a natural protective barrier swamp between the southern Kingdoms and the North, which is why the Andals never could conquer the North. You should get a map, it won't spoil, but will help...a *LOT.* ✌️

Robert has not only „some“ Targaryen blood from Orys, but his grandmother was a Targaryen too! His father Steffon Baratheon and Aerys were first cousins. The whole Rebellion was just named after him and he got the crown cause he had the strongest claim to the throne of all the rebels through his partly Targaryen heritage! You have to watch the Lore videos after every season! For non book readers, it connects all the ends and dots and creates a far bigger and better picture of the world of Westeros then the series alone

To add to this, Robert's Targaryen blood through his grandmother made him legally sixth in line to the throne before the Rebellion because there were so few Targaryens at this point. During the Rebellion, the king was killed as well as all those above Robert in the line of succession (including the two children that for some reason he didn't mind had died...) apart from two - Viserys and his mother Rhaella, who then died giving birth to Dany. If Robert had succeeded in killing these two as well he would technically be the legal heir to the Targaryen throne by Targaryen law. Obviously Targaryen loyalists wouldn't have excepted him due to his violent ascension but he'd have had a much stronger claim if only he'd managed to kill another couple of children.

@@samc9516 well, real history and this story show us that it isn‘t that important how strong your claim is, but how many followers, resources and soldiers you have at your back to get to the throne, in best case quickly so others must react to your action or step back... and how good your propaganda works! The number in line actually means little... just look into the Blackfyre Rebellion! Daemon as a legalized bastard managed to rally more Westerosi around his banner than his half-brother Daeron and his 4 sons... „technically“ he was very down far a bit in the succession line and still got very close to claim the throne if it weren‘t for the Dornish
@samc9516
@samc9516 2 жыл бұрын
@@michelmorio8026 True, I just think it's interesting how strong his claim really was, it's not just a drop of Targaryen blood he has, he really was quite close in the order of succession. I also like how it gives another motive for Robert to condone the murder of children and partly why he fears Viserys/Dany to the current day (although granted his drive was mostly hate and revenge haha). But yeah, Robert's claim is like Prince Harry claiming the British throne opposed to someone like me claiming it - Harry would have more backers than I would lol. So sure there are other factors at play but I wouldn't say validity of a claim is "unimportant". It's true your claim alone doesn't win you the throne but it will win you some supporters. For example Ned supports Stannis' claim simply because he discovered he's the legal heir. If Ned had got the word out that Joffrey was illegitimate before Robert died there would be far fewer Joffrey supporters in the realm. In the case of Daemon Blackfyre, his supporters obviously didn't care about the line of succession and valued other things like symbolism and strength, but Daeron's supporters did care - if it wasn't for his strong valid claim he wouldn't have had any supporters at all. For Robert the continued living of Viserys and Dany is a thorn in his side because if they tried to gain support against him, they have a stronger claim, a reason for people to rally behind them. If they had died, of course some Targaryen loyalists would still oppose Robert but it becomes much more challenging to justify a rebellion with someone else - who would they support? Book only spoilers:... Another example is Aegon the sixth - he has been raised as Aegon, son of Rhaegar and makes his claim in that name because that name has a strong claim that Targaryen supporters can rally behind; he'll win far more support as Aegon than as a Blackfyre because it is stronger claim than the "Baratheon" claim under Targaryen succession.

@@samc9516 Well you see it a little bit one sided! Of course there are people/lords/knights who see it that way (like Ned with Stannis for instance) that a certain person has the best/only claim, but again, successions are always messy if the previous monarch wasn’t very specific who will follow him! There are different models/laws of succession in reality as well as in this fiction story regarding inheriting/transition of power; BUT there are also things like what is unwritten/uncodified tradition (in Daeron II‘s case not having the sword Blackfyre like every previous Targaryen monarch... or Viserys I. being the first Targaryen king without a dragon) and what interests (what can they gain/loose) will third parties have in who will ascend to the throne (not only the Great Houses but also minor ones who for example many backed Daemon or even institutions like the Citadel or Faith or even foreign powers like Braavos or some other Essosi city states who quite often interfered in Westeros‘ history). This matter will reappear and play a central role in „House of the Dragon“. The Velaryons between the First Great Council and the end of the Dance of the Dragons are a good example in that case for even switching sides several times in which claimant to support depending on how it serves their interests To put it short... most people are rather pragmatic then dogmatic or principled Regarding Joffrey... well he had just the support of the Lannisters and their minor houses and the Crownlands around Kings Landing... the rest of the realm was just slowly adapting to the circumstances that the other „claimants“ kings were dying or loosing so they were betting very late on the safe horse (or have eggs in several baskets as the Royces, the Florents, the Fossoweys, the Estermonts or the Swanns for example) In Robers case the tiniest claim is enough... he also has the right of conquest in his corner! Aegon I. didn‘t become king because of a birthright or succession, but by conquest and the other kings‘ submission! Robert was made King basically by Jon Arryn, Ned and Hoster Tully... Tywin made a safe bet in supporting the winner and Balon Greyjoy, Mace Tyrell and Doran Martell grudgingly adapted to the circumstances and new reality Don‘t understand your last point... we don‘t know yet his actual identity and who supports his claim (if he truly has one)! Young Griff is still a riddle after a decade and too many theories are mudding the water... since George gets a lot of inspiration from the Wars of the Roses, „Aegon“ reminds me more of a Lambert Simnel or perhaps even Perkin Warbeck situation Henry VII. Tudor had to deal with (who has several parallels to Daenerys... raised in exile under constant threat, unlikely claimant, invading with a foreign army and exiled lords & knights who fought on the Lancastrian side...)

@@michelmorio8026 Thanks for the detailed reply, I appreciate the effort! Yeah it's probably true I'm being one sided, I know, but I do totally appreciate and understand the other side of the discussion that sometimes other factors in a succession dispute surpass the legal argument *in the end* - I'm just saying the legal standpoint is still relevant in succession disputes. I'm the type of person that likes following "rules" and systems, and if I were Westerosi the order of succession would probably be pretty important to me. (In reality I'm anti-monarchy in favour of what I'd regard as a truer democracy, but I put that aside for fiction like this!) My main point in this comment thread is that in Westeros there is a legal system to determine an order of succession, and when you consider only the legal order Robert is sixth in line to the Targaryen throne like Prince Harry is sixth in line. Following the laws and systems of the realm are how things are "supposed" to go in theory, and that's what I'm referring to, and considering this and assuming no disputes and all those above them in the line of succession die/abdicate/relinquish claim, they will be the new heir. The extension of my point is that the order of succession or validity of a claim to the throne is still significant in disputed succession - as you said in your original comment "[Robert] got the crown cause he had the strongest claim to the throne of all the rebels through his partly Targaryen heritage"; it plays a role in the complex politicking over disputed succession. When there is a peaceful succession the heir is usually made clear (as you rightly say), but I'm not aware of a single example in Westeros or in real history where a non-disputed succession occurred to someone who wouldn't be considered the legal heir by the laws of the land (feel free to educate me though!). In the politicking of disputed succession there are other factors to consider such as "unwritten/uncodified tradition" which I referred to as "symbolism", such as the Blackfyre sword but there is no legal basis for this established. Of course factors like this have a big impact on the arguments and outcomes of disputes - I agree with you that succession isn't determined by the law alone. The way I see it there is the law and the legal heir, and any other claimants are essentially criminals in the eyes of the law. That doesn't mean the illegal claim doesn't win and retroactively legitimise what they did, as Robert did (although I'd still dispute this because according to the law Viserys was the heir and therefore legally the new king and Robert was a criminal with an illegal and therefore illegitimate claim, and Viserys never relinquished his claim nor changed his law nor died with no heir so it stands that under Targaryen law Robert is no king. The difference with Aegon I is that his enemies either surrendered their lands/titles/thrones or died and could no longer claim it, but Robert cannot claim this due to Viserys' continued claim... but in his case, the practical realities of "right of conquest" obviously overcome this legal standpoint haha). Yes I'd certainly have to agree that people act mainly in their own self interest and that whether they use legal/rightful heir arguments or other arguments such as the sword Blackfyre it's usually just a political talking point to use as a tool to achieve what they want for themselves! Things get even more messy when you have contradictory laws such as when Viserys I died - he had always been clear who his heir was but due to the older rule that a male is favoured over a female there was enough of a window for dispute despite the king's clear ruling. In this case both factions had a legal argument behind them. As for my Young Griff point, I'm working off the assumption he's of Blackfyre descent. Of course you're right this is by no means certain but I get the impression it's the most common, supported and popular theory. My point is: in his conquest he's vying for Targaryen supporters by using the Targaryen name (I think we can at least agree he's not actually Aegon Targaryen?) - he's after those who would support the legal argument that Robert is a usurper and consequently Tommen's claim is superseded by "Aegon's" claim. If he did the same conquest under the name "Blackfyre", all other factors (strength, sellswords, personality/character) would all be the same but I'd posit he'd garner far fewer supporters, and I'd argue that's at least in some part influenced by people who care for a rightful king. This was my point, although in retrospect I think it's not a great argument because there are many other reasons someone would favour a Targaryen claimant over a Blackfyre one irrespective of the line of succession.

Jorah's Northern, and descended from the first men, not the Andals. The Dothraki just vaguely see Westeros as the land of the Andals, so they just assume Westerosi = Andal.

Maybe it also has to do with chivalry being an Andal concept. Over the time, the ideas of knighthood, valour and maidenhood spread throughout the North as well, hence Jorah being a knight, but originally, those were Andal conceptions. Maybe, just how there is no word for Thank you in Dothraki, their word for Knight is simply Andal?

The history of Westeros is really just a fantastical version of Britain’s history. So many parallels. England was once split into multiple kingdoms before William the Conqueror came from over the sea (Aegon Targaryen the Conqueror). The Andals (blond and tall) are the Vikings which invaded England multiple times. The Wall is Hadrian’s Wall which split and protected England from the “barbarians” (the Scots). The Old Gods represent the native pagan religion before Christianity (the new gods) became dominant. The continent of Westeros is also just a giant version of Britain - it looks almost identical. I could go on!

Robert DIDN'T mind. He chalked it up as casualities of war. He prioritized realpolitick (probably rightfully so) over morality. It was all about the greater good for Robert and Tywin. The only person who did care about the massacres was Ned Stark. It haunted him for the remainder of his life. Even in total victory he was neve really a free man.
@rafaelhenrique4139
@rafaelhenrique4139 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if realpolitick did him that much good lol. He had just won a rebellion, his soldiers were veterans and he had great commanders, I think he could have used that moment to cut short Lannister grip in the kingdom, lowering their influence and military power without looking like a tyrant or a new mad king. Instead, what happened is that even if he won most of the war without the Lannister, he in the end came out of it looking like he owned them the victory, the Lannister became way more powerful than before, almost everyone in Robert's own court was under Lannister influence, his coins were Lannister coins, and in the end he ended up assassinated by them, not even his throne passed to his rightful heirs.

First Men also came from Essos, where Dany is now, just far, far earlier. They crossed via a no longer existing land bridge into Westeros, the Andals sailed. It's somewhat similar to how the Americas has been thought to have been inhabited first by people crossing over the Bering land bridge from northeast Asia, and later European colonizers arriving by ship.

4:10 No, Jorah is from the North and descended from the first men. He calls him an Andal out of ignorance/doesn't care enough to be corrected. Its kind of like how the Muslims called all Crusaders the Franks, which the majority were but not all of them. The Byzantines called them all celts even though they were very few celts left in the world at that point. The other explanation is that Andals were knights. Most people in the north arent knighted because knighthood is linked to the faith of the seven, not too dissimilar to how knighthood was related to Christianity in the real world. Jorah was one of the few northman who were knighted. [He was knighted after the assault on pike]. So, it's possible that Drogo is referring to Jorah as an Andal because he's a knight. Most people from westeros are Andals, but there are the northerns descended from the first men and theres also the Rhoynar, who settled Dorne. I'm not quite sure if they're supposed to be similar to middle eastern or not but I've always suspected they're a stand in for Spainish/Italian. I'm not positive on that though.

100%. Aegon could afford to let the fallen Kings keep most of their power because he could keep them in line with 'dragon insurance'. Once the Targaryen's lost their dragons, they had to be way more reliant on their nobility class and things like custom, law, precedence and the status quo. And Tywin was the guy keeping that all in check for Aerys.

1. Even though it is colloquially still called the Seven Kingdoms, it's now actually 9: The North The Vale The Riverlands The Crownlands The Stormlands Dorne The Reach The Westerlands The Iron Islands 2. Yes, the Targaryens engaged in incestuous marriages to keep their bloodline 'pure'. Viserys was meant to marry his sister, Daenerys, until he sold her to Khal Drogo. Their parents, Aerys and Rhaella were also brother and sister as were their grandparents. Some might say that is what gave Daenerys the blood of the dragon and gave her the ability to hatch the three dragon eggs. 3. You ask whether Aerys II was really mad. Consider this: he sent his wife, Queen Rhaella, pregnant with Daenerys, and remaining son, Viserys, to Dragonstone for safety. Yet he kept his son's wife, Elia, and their two children, Rhaenys and Aegon, in King's Landing and in harm's way. As events turned out, he got them killed during the sack of the city. Why did he do it? Aerys had become so paranoid, he even suspected his own son and heir of treachery, so he kept his son's family in the Red Keep as insurance, same as he did with Jaime Lannister. In doing so he severely reduced the line of Targaryen succession and almost completely destroyed his house. And all because of his paranoia.

I know everyone hated Viserys, but as an actor I quite enjoyed him. He reads these histories in such a fantastic way! He also reads the The Tales of Dunk and Egg as well. (Another George RR Martin novel) It’s related to the Game of Thrones series too. You’re really catching onto the history and more quite well. There’s a lot to take in but I promise, you’ll remember it become fluent in GOT talk soon. Love your reactions to the show AND the lord!

For the record, Robert Baratheon was in love with the *IDEA* of Leanna Stark. He had only met her once, at the Tourney at Harrenhal. And Lyanna immediately saw him for what he was, a great warrior and leader, but also a womanizing drunkard. She also knew he has a base born daughter in the Vale of Arryn from when he and Ned were fostered there. Lyanna was doing her duty to her family by marrying Robert. Side note: During Robert's Rebellion, in the Battle of the Bells, Robert was hiding in various houses till Ned and his forces showed up and won the day. One of those houses was a brothel, where Robert sired *another* base born girl...probably one of the reasons he remembers that battle with such fondness...just sayin. Both girls show up in the books. Not only did Robert have Targaryen blood through the founder of House Baratheon, Orys Baratheon, but his grandfather Ormund Baratheon married Rhealle Targaryen, the aunt of Mad KingAerys. So, Robert's grandmother, his father's mother, was also a Targaryen.

If you enjoy this, as you really seem to, you should seriously watch "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. JRR Tolkein created an entire mythological world, with beings, languages and heroes that are incredible. As a linguist who loved mythology, he realized that England didn't really have its own mythology, and set about creating them. I would really love to see your reaction to the "Extended Version" movies, since the extended versions really add much background and information that was left our of the theatrical versions. I'm enjoying your reactions so very much!

I actually haven't watched these before, it's nice to watch them along with your reaction! I really like how they have the many perspectives on things; It shows that not everyone feels the same about the same things... Like the Night's watch; First we have the Lord Commander talking about it like a pride, noble army protecting the realm... Then we get Maester Luwin's take, describing them more as a dwindling host, with their former glory long gone. They have a good purpose, but very few good men left. And then we get Tywin... Who pretty much calls them charlatans. Useless pretend-warriors who are little more than criminals serving a sentence. Who are pretending to defend the realm against an inexistent threat. And it's made 10 times better by the actors doing the reading/narrating!

The Baratheons are said to be descended from a goddess due to being descended from the Storm Kings, as well as the inhumanly implacable Durran Godsgrief who defied even the gods, until the end never yielding to them, and finally won a victory by weathering their wrath with the construction of Storm’s End. This may go some way towards explaining their supernatural genetics which seem to be more potent than any other house save maybe the Starks and Targaryens, extending to certain personality traits which can be observed in multiple generations over hundreds of years of Baratheon history and even the Durrandons before them. Namely the extreme stubbornness, self determination and deep well of rage which seem to be common traits for almost every Baratheon, even ones who at first glance don’t seem to be alike at all. Argilac “the Arrogant” Durrandon (the last Storm King) also exhibits these qualities, and of course the founder and namesake of his house, Durran Godsgrief. They are characterised as if they are forces of nature rather than men, and such comparisons have been made of Baratheons in the past such as Lyonel “the Laughing Storm” Baratheon, as well as Boremund Baratheon (described as an unmoving man of stone) and Borros Baratheon (described as a raging, howling wind). Robert and, as you will see, Stannis Baratheon are/were men along this vein even though they have deeply conflicting personalities in other areas. This is not to mention the physical characteristics of House Baratheon which are observed in all it’s members and even bastards of it’s members, ie the black hair, blue eyes and large, powerful physiques.

Given that Westerosi history somewhat mirrors British history, you can see it like this: The first men - Celtic / Briton tribes that follow a naturalist religion like the druids. The Andals came from the continent and can be compared to the Angles and Saxons, bringing their “new” religion which equates to Christianity. But the First Men (Celts/ Gaels / Picts) continue to rule in the North (Scotland). Then came Aegon the Conqueror and the house of Targaryen, or William the Conqueror and the house of Normandy. The children of the forest are akin to the Fae folk that the Celts and Gaels beloved inhabited the land before them.

All parts of Westeros has mixed blood of First Men and Andals, but the North remains very predominantly of First Men descent, both ethnically and culturally. Among the nobility, the invading Andals often married the daughters, even widowed wives, and fallen First Men kings. The First Men weren't wiped out south of the North, but mixed with Andals, adopting their faith, but also often keeping sacred weirwoods in their castle godswoods.

Mormont it's a north house but the reason karl drogo called Jorah Mormont an Andals it is because the only swords wielder people the Dothraki know are the Andals that were originaly from the west before establishing themselves in westeros. Drothakis have know clues of the children of the forest or the first man, the only armored sword fighters their tribe has ever know are the Andals. So They just see Jorah Mormont as an Andal.

First men came thru the "arm of Dorne"... from the map, the may have come from the Southern Isles - Sorthoryos. Also, the Long Nught happened like 500+ years before the Andals came. It is not like the First Men and Andals came at the same time.

House Mormont is indeed a northern house, which means Lord Commander Mormont and Jorah are not andals, as you said. But, being northener is not at all mandatory in order to be Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. It's just coincidence that right now a Mormont is Commander. On the other matter, I think Drogo called Jorah "the Andal" because for the dothraki all of Westeros people must be the same.

All of this stuff is very loosely based on real world history, culture, religion/mythology and geography. George RR Martin has just nicely packaged it all together, often combining certain parts of historical cultures, locations and events for one part of his world building and then using other parts of the same historical cultures, locations and events for another part of his world building. Examples: "Westeros" is basically Western Europe (particularly the British Isles). Much of the society is based on medieval "feudal" society. Royalty - Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses Nobility - Lords, Ladies and Knights The North - Northern England, Ireland, Scotland The Wall - Hadrian's Wall North of the Wall - Scandinavia The South - Southern England, Wales, France, Southern Europe Dorne - Spain Children of the Forest - Mesolithic/Neolithic Stone age influences First Men - Bronze age influences (e.g. Celts) Andals - Iron age influences (e.g. Anglo-Saxons - even name sounds like "Angles") Old Gods - pre-Christian pagan (Celtic, Norse and Germanic religions) Faith of the Seven (i.e. one god with seven aspects) - Roman Catholicism Stark/Lannister feud - 15th century English "War of the Roses" succession crisis and civil war House Stark - House York of England House Lannister - House Lancaster of England Targaryens/Valyrians - Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Normans Aegon the Conqueror - William the Conqueror Old Valyria - Minoans of Crete, Atlantis myth Valyrian language - Latin Essos - Greece, Italy, Middle-East, Africa and Asia Dothraki - Mongols, Huns, Turks Braavos - Venice, Athens Titan of Braavos - Colossus of Rhodes

So Khal Drogo and the Dothraki use to call Jorah the Andal as like a foreigner terminology type of thing even though the Andals were from Essos originally but they moved to Westeros as the law states but the problem here is that jorah is of the north and Mormont's are a first man house so it can be put down to number of things this is going from some book material as well but : 1. You can put it down to shear ignorance that they not know better or not being well educated as the Dothraki weren't and as they were a confronting people this isn't too hard to believe as they like to be in your face. 2. Maybe they were intelligent enough as they knew he was a Knight because there a no Knights in The North except the Houses that did follow the faith of the Seven ( The Manderley's and Whitehills ) or any individual converts like Jorah who were condemned from their house or stepped down from inheritance due to dishonour or whatever reason as the Old Gods did not have the ceremony or belief for Knights and liked to mock them and so it therefore serves as a reminder of change of faith and disowner ship. 3. It's a foreshadow from George R Martin playing on words again as he always does and it Shadows his shifting allegiance and personal gain throughout the Character's growth as well as a mix of the above stated compiled together to give complexion and diversity. Otherwise it's just something that the tv show overlooked But that was a very good point you brought up your literally the best reactor to watch In my opinion nothing gets past you really catch things fast like half the thing's that you figured out already I had to watch and speculate over multiple times but yeah you just really dissect everything which I love.
