It's a short but sweet upload tonight! I'm on a mission this year to up the ante and tackle bigger fences more frequently, in an attempt to make it less of a big deal when we're out competing. Naturally this started with a William Blane clinic held at our go-to local spot, Allenshill.
We started off strong, finding a great rhythm with fewer pulls, and Jammy not being too strong. As we moved on to jumping the course, I won't lie, a few nerves kicked in. But hey, it's January, and we're in training mode, so no biggie.
I'm keen to hear your thoughts, so drop them in the comments below. Hope you enjoy this snippet from our January ride! 🏇✨

Meg, you mentioned that lesson with Nicola on the show jumper. She had you leaving the horse alone on the approach to the fence and doing the equivalent of "repairing the canter" on the turns. Show jumping is full of turns. You need to USE them! They are little half circles where you can re-establish the canter rhythm and half-halt without pulling on her (leg on FIRST). Maybe set up 2 jumps on a diagonal at home and use them to work on what happens BETWEEN the fences (using the turns to fix the rhythm and then leaving the horse alone 3 strides out). If you can get her to take half halt properly on the turns, she will learn to take a half-halt (NOT a pull!) on a straight line as well. 🙂 That seemed like a very useful lesson!

That stop was you pulling and her going ooooh look mum. You should have been riding her at that point into go on go on go on! Leg and a bit of flapping. I loved your very honest take on your riding. I totally agree with your take on this.

I’ve discovered that my anxiety when jumping courses comes when I’m feeling unbalanced. So I’m trying to train myself to think about how to improve the canter balance (instead of just pulling) when I feel anxious because it feels ‘wrong.’

Stop obsessing over your hands Meg’s!! You’re doing awsome. Like everyone and yourself are saying, that awsome feeling comes because you present the jump in a good rythm. I think you really notice it in this video but every good jump happens when you come at the jump in a steady rythm🙌🏻

Thank you for sharing Meg, it’s lovely to see the beginning of the season for all the “kids”! What a difference in you and Jammy since your school with Piggy! The canter is more balanced and you are truly riding the strides between the fences, keeping Jammy focused on you rather than laser-locking on the next fence and hustling to get there! I agree with the comments that you’re being a little tough on yourself about your hands and that your best jumps come when you have a rhythmic canter. I was told once to think of doing a course like it was a dressage pattern interrupted by fences, which really helped my guy and I stay connected and helped alleviate a lot of my nerves. So looking forward to more Jammy content!

Meg - I cannot thank you enough for being transparent about your dear Jammy. She is so beautiful and she kind of reminds me of Strawberry Jam or Strawberry Tiramisu lol i dont know what it is but anyway most importantly - I did not like how Jam would often disrespect you while on course. She would be more focused on what she wanted to do rather than what you were instructing her to do and that is where your confidence has been messed with a bit. You are by far more experienced rider than i will ever be but just an outsider looking in - i tend to wonder if you strengthened your confidence while riding Jam she just might change her attitude a bit where she focusses more on you and could bring about better results for both you and her and develop a team work frame of mind in both of you on the same page! But again i am just taking a guess. Cheers!

You need to use the mantra the rhythm, the rhythm, the rhythm, every canter stride because when you used it at vlogmas it helped sort your stride to a jump and your desire to half halt. Just a suggestion. 😊😊😊😊😊😊 Have Peggy Marshes voice saying the rhythm the rhythm as it worked wonders with brownie

You guys are epic , sure you will smash badders! I think you should remember to give yourself more credit when you say Jam picked up the slack, don’t forget you produced her so she wouldn’t be able to that without the great work and great riding you’ve put in up to this point. (And anyways, I still think you did your bit of the work to jump clear!)

Your confidence has come on leaps and bounds your going to have fences and rounds that didn’t go perfectly but remember it’s not so much about the mistakes happening (bc they are going to we all make mistakes) it’s how you deal with correcting that mistake! And can I just say how polite was her stop she was ‘Im really okay thank you mum’ 🥹 well done meggy and jammy ❤

Amazing job really hammering on those lessons to get you to the next level!!❤❤❤ I'm in love with William for bringing the leaning issue up. I noticed it 2 yrs ago but was waiting to say anything because you were already working on my many bits of riding technique. I figured it would be something a trainer would fix with you when all other things were more in place. ❤❤❤ So nice to see this peice start to fall into place as well!❤❤❤❤❤ 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Lovely! Now just bend the elbows a hair more when Jam's hind legs hit the ground and your seat starts swinging at canter. There is the slightest bob downward of your hands that puts sort of "static" in your communication wth the reins. ❤❤❤ And I see this is also happening at trot, so when you sit, bend the elbow more. It may help to think bend knee and elbows together. You may have to over exaggerate it some during your own practice sessions maybe during warmup for maybe like 3 or 5 minutes to just let the brain know the elbow are allowed to bend now.😂 It is one of those areas where hidden tension shows itself in your riding. I giggle because I tense my tongue because that's the only thing I can tense and doesn't seem to massively affect my riding. Lol. (However I know it does to some extent😂) 10:08-10:13...whatever you were doing there was amazing for Jam because she started going round and connected and swinging nicely through. I assume it has to do with tension in your body having been released

You're very honest about your riding and kind to your horses but I notice all the professional eventers you've worked with this winter have said the same thing, Laura and Dicky at the London masterclass, Nicola when you rode her horse, Piggy when she rode Jammy, and then when you rode her horse, they all stressed the importance of focusing on keeping the rhythm of the canter and letting the jump come to you.

I teach beginner cyclists. They all lean into corners while trying to hold the bike upright. This will kinda work but they need to learn to sit up, keep shoulders level and let the steed do the leaning. A lot of people including instructors, don' t understand what the problem is, and unfortunately you see seasoned riders still doing it, and wondering why they don't feel confident Imagine you are a tightrope walker with a horizontal pole on you shoulders.. balance comees from allowing the rope to move while keeping the pole steady

Down your lines do you count your strides? This helps maintain the rhythm. So cool you are more aware of rhythm and the pull is getting better! Weekly or fortnightly jump lessons are the go🎉

I have a serious question, please don't take this as a negative, you are a BEAUTIFUL RIDER! why is it that riders nowadays do not RELEASE or GIVE to their horse over the jumps? It seems that a horse would be more willing if they were "rewarded" for going over by "releasing" the hands so that the horses did not get "bumped" in the mouth or essentially "punished" for going over the fences. You are not the only person who does this, however I thought that I would get the best answer from a kind and gentle rider such as yourself. ❤

Jammy : “If you’re going to talk about MY fitness and tummy on public video to MY fans, I get to talk about yours. Let’s just say if you didn’t have reins to hold onto, your core would just collapse and you’d fall to the ground in a heap! I thought we agreed that in public we would both be dazzling and what was eaten in the barn stayed in the barn. My agent Hobbs will be contacting you about our partnership. In future your comments about me will include phrases like athletic, strong, FFB ( fit for Badminton) and of course, a paragon of equine beauty. If not, you might just end arse over on a course somewhere. Humph ( ears back, big stomp). Oh drat missed your foot.”
