Apple is well-known for its PowerBook series of laptops from the 1990s. But there was one portable computer the company made that had far-reaching effects -- and it wasn't even a Mac.
Shout-out and thanks to Clint from Lazy Game Reviews ( / lazygamereviews ) for his help with this episode!

I bought one of these in 1997 through my College bookstore. Battery life was in the days of use and worked great for all the papers and labs. It's still in a box in the basement. Such nostalgia, I loved the Newton.

I had one of these when I was in elementary school. I used the beam feature to create a list of observations I had about my classmates. It was promptly perverted into a gossip mill tabloid equivalent over the course of the week. Drama ensued but my role as the creator was never officially revealed. It was also used for gaming (the TI-calculators replaced that role later on).

Lots more interesting bits to cover here. The filesystem was a database, the programing tools which required a Mac (a la iOS), the handwriting recognition, even Apples relationship with ARM (selling its stake after being a founding partner).

One of the best product ideas they probably shouldn't have abandoned. My dad was an Apple authorized education sales provider and he had all the marketing stuff on it. I remember watching a VHS tape about this and its intended use and being very jealous of not having one. I know my dad did have one around at one point but I don't remember spending much time on it.

On Apple's idea for the e-mate to educate children, In 2002 A couple of Schools in Metro Detroit introduced an idea to give an entire class of middle school students Laptops for school work. My school, Malcolm X Academy in Detroit, was the only school to revive Apple computers. Sixty 6th Grade students were given I book G3s, the computer lab was filled with E macs and I macs. Two Years later the programed was deemed a success. The 60 students who were given mac books were allowed to keep them. While the program was expanded to include the 7th and 6th grade classes. They were given I book G4's. Even though Malcolm X academy was in a pretty run down Detroit Neighborhood, none of the computers were stolen. Everyone deserves access to a great education no matter the income level.

My dad, who was in computer sales, specifically selling computers to schools, brought home an eMate one day. My little brother absolutely loved it. Didn't have an orange stylus though. This stylus matched the rest of the computer. Although our eMate may have been a prototype.

We had these in elementary school, although they were vastly underutilized. The only thing we used them for was typing up documents because there weren't enough Mac's to go around. The teacher would have us type up whatever we were working on, then use that expansion port and hook it up to the mac when we were ready to print.

I was an Apple certified tech at a school district that gave emates to every student for school use. Even after all this time, I still own two of them. I loved them! They had a tripod socket on the bottom making it very easy to take into the field for science experiments. And 3rd party peripherals were available for measuring voltage, temperature, and light levels. The entire school district was on appletalk networks, and statistically speaking, everything worked beautifully.

Back when I was in high school I had a teacher that gave me tons of these powermac g3/g4 and clamshell g3 laptops and imac g3s. He had a deal with the schools to get all there old computers. I wish I hadn’t gotten rid off all that. Back in 2010.

I liked the whole look and feel of it in 1997, and I have to admit I still do. It’s a really basic, focused, rugged sort of device. The sending and receiving at the touch of a button, turning on the backlight, all seems cool still!

I've seen these online before, though I've not seen one personally. They remind me of the more successful AlphaSmart products, especially the Dana because it ran Palm OS. I actually remember using those in elementary school, though even when I was a kid and using them, they seemed more like a gimmick than something really useful. Also, I'm a smiple person, so even though I was already giving this video a thumbs-up, hearing Clint from LGR makes me want to give it multiple thumbs-up. (Thumbses-up? Thumbs-ups?)

i got one of these babies second hand, initially i found it useful for taking notes when i went back to study after 4 years of work. after a while i got bit by the dreaded cable pinch issue m, mange’s you fix it, but it wasn’t the same since. i upgraded the storage and fixed the battery pack too. i could beam to the printer if i had the correct driver which was pretty nifty, such a versatile device.

I thought the eMate 300 did make it to market for about three months before the axe fell. My best friend bought one when they came out. I borrowed it from him and fooled around with it for a while, downloading old Newton games and programs from various online collections and transferring them across the serial port.

I'm probably too late to say this, but this looks similar to the Alphasmart line of devices, particularly the Dana, which was essentially the PalmOS version of this in the early 00s. Alphasmart was a company started by some Apple engineers for schools in the early 90s, and their stuff is wonderful, especially for writers. Check it out, if you're interested. On another note, love your vids!

The eMate 300 was sold to consumers. Toward the end of Newton's life, eMates were available for purchase at the Apple online store and Apple authorized resellers like CompUSA, CDW and MacMall.

That's actually something I got a lot of conflicting information on. I never found references to them being sold in retail stores, but I did find a press release about Apple planning to offer them directly through mail order. But I also never found anything confirming that those mail-order sales actually happened, just that they were planned. 1997 and early 1998 were seemingly an absolute whirlwind for Apple and especially Newton, and it appears that plans changed very frequently.
