Oh Esme! My favourite phrase ‘my horse stole Christmas with its vet bill’ comes to mind. My 2yo gelding sliced the back of his front leg open. The gap was maybe 2inches. Thankfully he didn’t need to go to hospital. He did however need 4/5 vet appointments and lots of wound dressing, flushing and meds! He’s much better now! We also made the decision to put up 24hr cameras that are powered my solar panels and battery packs. Along with portable WiFi that is also solar powered. Since then we’ve been able to get a better idea of what my pony does to himself…and well…he likes to mount the fencing…🙄🤣

I’m really sorry this has happened again. My horse had a deep cut right on his hock. We could see his tendons for weeks. Luckily it all healed well. We got him back in work and all was good. Then he reopened his wound a couple of weeks later. It’s devastating, but know that they’ll get through it stronger than before. Sending love to you and Joey.

glad joey's going to be alright in the long run with this injury. like you said it's better for him to just go to the vet - a month away versus upwards of 3 months on box rest, no contest which one is better for him in the long run. it'll be hard not having him home but he'll heal up better this way. if only there was a way to wrap him up in bubble wrap every day! he'll be right as rain soon though and back where he belongs in no time.

If it makes you feel any better I've owned my horse for 7 years (bought him at 6) and we started our relationship with 16 stitches in his knee from mostly succeeding in jumping out of a pasture. He was on 6 weeks of stall rest for that and then 6 months later he stuck the same leg through a fence and got 12 stitches but only 3 weeks of stall rest. Nock on wood since then aside from minor scraps he's been sound and with an amazing show career.

Esme I hope you really see this. I hope Joey recovers quickly. Also a tip that I think can help. When you turn Joey out you should put on turnout boots so if he does does something crazy it can protect his legs. I do that with my horse since she is crazy and it is just a layer of protection
