I have nothing against game prices my problem is that if I give them 60-70$ per game I want the final version. I do not want to be a beta tester and have to wait untill they release a patch to fix the issues. I want to buy the full game which they will improve with patches and so on.

@@quinto6 Really? How? When a company launches a product it should 100% work from the day it launches. Let's remember Batman: Arkham Knight and Cyberpunk. They should work without glitches or like how Microsoft launches new versions of Windows or patches that do not work 100% and force the users to be beta testers. Once you launch a product you should not use your clients as beta testers.

Not to mention if you're budgeting in every way you can think of then digital WILL take longer to download, install and get the game going than physical. GTA 5 pc? about 2 hours install on pc, to download the same thing about 8 hours on my connection. To install ps4 version? Maybe 15 minutes. Why? Because the majority of data is there on the disc already then you just need to grab patches. And this was on the stock mechanical hdd. Yes the internet gets faster and faster, and there is ALWAYS the trend of rates being dirt cheap and then skyrocketing when your trial period is over. But do you really think those 1 GB+ connections are going to stay cheap when the reality is the average family (much less the average person) doesn't NEED that fast? They're just giving you back things you need (like no data caps) That they took away (and charging you if you went with lower speeds to get it back) Truth is when the rate hikes come (and if not the hidden fees like line and modem replacement) for the fiber connections come they'll probably be a lot more costly. After all you're using a lot closer to top of the line hardware.

Gaming has gotten expensive since companies realized they could remove content from a full game and sell it back to the consumer as DLC. It started with varying editions, such as the base, deluxe, and ultimate. Then moved to shoving in battle passes and microtransactions at every corner (as mentioned in your video). More than anything, in the last 2 generations of consoles, we havent had anything of significance come out that was groundbreaking. "Meh" games that look pretty have become the norm.. Our favorite series have either taken to the rest of the market and are littered with microtransactions/BPs/ETC and/or their stories have become watered down and predictable. Not to mention, the "norm" being broken on release. If the games are so expensive to make, where's the quality that SHOULD come with that price hike? Devs can ask for more money all they want, but the quality should also come with that. I realize that wont happen, and that's fine, but less people will be buying their games; and rightfully so.
@DefeatedVictory
@DefeatedVictory Жыл бұрын
Okay, I get that but inflation has increased the price of everything. However, they’re also pushing more units of games sold than ever and pumping them with all these micro transactions. Raising the price just feels like a way to milk more money because we all know they’re not bleeding money making these games
@CommodoreFan64

Yep, and don't forget with a lot of games going digital they cut out the retail middle man that takes away a chunk of their profits along with the cost of logistics of getting the product to the stores no longer being in play either.
@ghosts2169

Bro games are also getting more expensive to make, because their are a ton of people that want their games to feel cinimatic rather then just like a game. Which is causing the companies to have to pay more for developing the games.
@jandecoleman1

Here is the problem with the "adjusted for inflation" phrase, it is a company/government way of falsely making people feel better about higher prices. What is never mentioned is that at the time games were $40 - $50 we were not making as much money. Now let's look at the ratio of income, while adjusting for inflation that game back then would be 2 to 3 times more now, but are we making 2 to 3 times more income? Usually the answer is no. For example, in the early 2000's I was making about $35000 a year, while now 20 years later I am making more at about $60000 a year, I am still $10000 shy of doubling my income. Therefore, this adjusting for inflation does not work, I am spending double for the same things while not making double. This is the equation for how much life costs.

In the uk new games went from £35/£40 to £60/£70 in the space of 8 years. Some are even more at £80!! These companies are taking advantage of all the rising costs and are pumping up the prices as much as possible and using all the world problems as excuses. Bare in mind buying games online there is no need to cover shipping costs , factories , making discs etc etc if anything it should be getting cheaper or at least staying at the same prices. Even old games are getting more pricy. These companies are not focusing on the passion and rather focusing only on milking peoples pockets to get as much revenue as possible. There is no standard anymore it’s like a free for all for the super greedy.

Something that is often forgotten when talking about "old prices of games" is that the market was massively smaller... They cost more because less people bought them. In todays day and age games are selling multimillions amounts of games recouping their investments and profits. In the days of the Megadrive and SNES, if a game sold over a million it was seen as a HUGE success. The increase in price these days is solely based on greed. Simple as that.
@LeonardGreenpaw
@LeonardGreenpaw Жыл бұрын
exactly the profits on games are massively scalable, since most of the cost is in designing, the cost of making and distributing disks is basically pocket change and with all the games being direct download, they just need to pay a penny for the server's operation. So all the cost is basically flat, and selling more is just profit

Plus many games are using Unreal Engine. And because many developers already know how to use Unreal Engine it usually takes less time to release a game. The less time you spend on making a game the more money you save. Plus it saves on training cost because if a game uses a proprietary game engine. They need to train people how to use that game engine.

5:45 It's nice that you looked at the price of games from 2004 to today and yes the price remains the same but what you forgot to include in the calculation is that from 2004 to today the game industry has grown by 300 percent from 26 billion dollars in 2004 to 200 billion today which means that most of the revenue of the game companies have increased without any additional costs on their part. Due to the fact that more people today play computer games than there were in 2004

One thing I didn't see you guys mention more of although you touched on it a bit is the fact that now games aren't on a physical disk or worse a cartridge that had a pcb in it and programmed and not to mention were actual full games that released finished and didn't have day one patches. Also the logistics and cost to ship all of the physical medium which is far less crucial today because of the fact that everything is moving digital. These game companies are so far in the red that they could afford to charge 30 maybe 40 dollars for a game and still be making millions of dollars, no not as many millions but they would still make millions. I will always land on the side of customers and say that prices should be as low as possible because for one I am a customer and these game companies have been getting so predatory with there practices that I could care less if they don't make enough money to stay in business. There will be someone else who will fill that spot in the market and probably do it better and give us a better product. AAA games should be 30 dollars 40 at the most bottom line.

I am only 29, but I do agree with this. I have a strong preference for owning physical copies of games. I will buy digital if there is a good sale or a game I cannot obtain physically, but otherwise I prefer having an actual collection. Plus, digital copies can be revoked from servers at any given time, which can revoke access to said games permanently (unless in some cases where it is installed prior to revoke - depends on game though). So, different perspectives. $70 still hurts, but inflation and all that makes it inevitable. I will just wait for sales. :)

Digital has its advantages sure, but what hasn’t been mentioned in the vid is that with physical you Actually OWN the game and get to keep it Forever without having to worry about games subscription services and digital stores SHUTTING DOWN and thus losing access to those games. Not to mention that sometimes they even exclude plenty of beloved games from these services. There is also the fact that you can share your games with your friends very easily with physical games, that helps reduce costs. Nintendo and Sony is notorious for that. P PS. You guys know That timeline title of “No one buy’s physical games anymore” is absolute bullshit. Just because you guys don’t buy physical games anymore doesn’t mean everyone does the same. AND you guys failed to mention the big disadvantages of digital gaming and seem to just absolutely discredit physical games.

My friend is one of the rare instances where Game Pass just doesn’t work. He has a randomized pick what game he plays from his backlog & once one is selected he must play it to 100% completion before he picks another game. He does this with other media as well. He wanted to start watching wrestling a year or 2 ago & I suggested AEW, offering to loan him my copy of the first PPV, but because full match cards for Dynamite aren’t available legally, he decided to go with WWE & yes started in the 70’s or whatever is the oldest stuff on Peacock’s version of the WWE Network. Sad that AAA games aren't really video games anymore. Remember when you could put a disc in, and actually start playing after 30 seconds of logo screens? Little to no bugs. Just pure ad free fun and no gambling boxes. Now you gotta pay over $100 dollars (over time) for a half finished game and then the "dlc" over a 2 year span to get the rest of the game. That's the equivalent of if Final Fantasy released only the first disc on PS1, and made you pay an additional $20 for each other disc over 18 months time.

It never felt that expensive back then. I think the cost of living was so much lower that we just had more money for entertainment. Hell I remember our house would regularly have a $100/mo bill for cable with PPV movies and shit. That seems like a lot of money to me today if it was $276 in 1985, and back then it was just considered necessary. But $100 is still what I pay for internet and streaming services combined. It seems like what I pay for a lot of equivalents of the same things today is close to the same amount my parents paid 30 years ago in that time's money. It's definitely not my field and I don't know much about how it works, but it seems like inflation doesn't affect everything the same way.

Put that into a spreadsheet, minus the profit, times by amount that would purchase. The value with the highest number is the price they will start using. What do you tell people? Inflation, it's perfect people have a basic understanding of what it is, so its not questioned. What about scales of economy? In the end it all comes down to the highest number wins.

I spent full price, on Fallout 76, on release. In the following years, if I was presented with the amount I've spent, on micro transactions, Fallout 1st, items in the Atomic Shop, as well as cash on eBay for legacy weapons and other in game materials, it would blow my mind. Last month, Sony offered the game for free, to PlayStation Plus members, because they know, once a new player gets into the game, they'll want the advantages of paying for Fallout 1st, as well as all the items offered in the Atomic Shop. Will it stop me from playing? NOPE! Why? because in the last 4 years, Bethesda has invested huge amounts of money and time, keeping the game going, and fresh for players. I'd say it has been the same for other games, like Fortnite. People are willing to pay, as long as the game is supported, and is kept fresh. If the support stops, the game dies.

I think it sucks to have price hikes but the way I figure if something is worth the money is if I can get at least my hourly wages worth of enjoyment out of it so for example a $70 game I would expect at least 3 hours of enjoyment (not just gameplay but enjoying that gameplay) then it basically pays for itself in my eyes

For $70, the game better work. Too many games are incomplete on launch to justify a price increase. I've grown comfortable with waiting a year to play a game because by that point it will be $30 and glitch free.

I mean honestly I am never worried about this inflation. I seldom buy new games, I have so many games I am catching up on since I am late to gaming. That by the time I get around to buying the new game it’s been out for several year and there is always eventually good sells. Now some games I have bought when they first came out but I usually buy a special edition. Like red dead or cyberpunk.

I point this out all the time. As a kid I might get a game a year. N64 was insane because the games were $60 out the gate. I get my kid a steam card and teach him to wishlist and get games on sale. I would have killed for a $4.99 lego game as a kid.

Truth is... when it comes to AAA games, we are asking them to employ thousands of people for multiple years across many disciplines and we want it to be without bugs... It literally costs more to make a game now than it used to. It costs more to make the game than it does a movie now. And it keeps costing money to support it for multiple years. I hate having to pay more as well but, you know, if we want all of this we do have to deal with them costing more.

The sooner paying customers stop justifying to themselves that it's good they are being ripped off repeatedly, the better, but man, people just refuse to admit they are being swindled at every turn. I wouldn't care about the $10 US price rise on base games if : 1. They came out finished, working and not bug ridden 2. Im gonna say something you guys aren’t going to like but it’s true. We’ve grown entitled. People used to treat gaming as a niche hobby and something of less value than other forms of media. This lead to developers just doing what they can to survive and release a game. Now that it’s a multi billion dollar industry those same people are buying a PS5. We aren’t undervaluing developers work anymore and the prices will reflect that. None of us value the work that goes into it enough so we just see fun toy.

Yeah that's true, but you also have to remember N64 carts had various IC's, and memory chips, and back then that kind of storage was freaking expensive for what little space the carts had, and Nintendo had little control over the price of those chips even buying them wholesale. These days physical games come on DVD, or Blu-Ray which cost pennies to stamp out, or in the case of Nintendo flash carts that are cheap for GB's of data storage. So yeah the prices really should not be going up, and more so with digital games where they cut out retailers that take a chunk of their profit away.

For a physical game 70-100 dollars would be fine, but to purchase a purely digital version where a publisher is just giving you pure data, over the internet, that should be halved. For the full fat, no discount, whole sticker price I better be getting a disc, a box, cover art etc.

It is unfair to say that a game that was $60 in 2005 is more expensive than the modern version... to that end I give you the Sims. In 2004 the Sims 2 with all expansions, they were not DLC yet, would cost you about $90... or about $145 today... Today, the Sims 4 with all DLC is about $830. No inflation, that is just the price. I remember paying about $30 for Roller Coaster Tycoon, and playing it for hundreds of hours, and never actually beating it, because it was so big. The real reason people are so upset at that price hike... is that they know those games will cost that much, and be an unfinished nightmare. Hell... Halo 3 released with a limited edition version that was $100... and included a full size, wearable Spartan Helmet.

collecting. is my main thing, say the internet goes out or somthing happens to your account, youre screwed, you lost all those games for nothing. or if want you eventually trade it in (which i still dont do) you can resell it. for example i recently got a ps4 for free. ive been looking for bloodborne and i dont want to pay full or half price for it on the psn. lets be honest you wont find it for 8.50$ digital. which is what i found it for at a pawn shop. ive collected all the pokemon games from GBC all the way to scarlet and violet. you just dont get the same experience from loading up a game from an account vs getting the cartidge and popping it into the GBA. depending on the game, physical copies will in some way be cheaper then digital. atleast with physical you feel like your money went to somthing you can hold and touch vs what your account "says" you own. thats just my 2 cents
