I just visited here over the weekend and I discovered that the final business on the interior concourse of the mall will be closing March 27th. I’ve been going to this mall my entire life, and even used to work at a store there for 2 years. It’s so incredibly sad to see it like this now. Pieces of the ceiling are literally caving in now, and they don’t even turn all the lights on inside anymore.

Every time I see the color combinations of salmon and turquoise, I'm reminded of the furniture I was given for my first apartment in 1999. It was that lovely combination of salmon, turquoise and mint green in the oh-so-90's Southwestern print that was so popular. I giggle and hard roll my eyes that all of that is coming back into style again with teens.
@IVR027 жыл бұрын
I'd buy it. Then again, I'm just a dumb teenager who's obsessed with pop culture from, oh... 1967-1999?
@Firevine7 жыл бұрын
Hah, I had a couch and loveseat that I got from my parents when I first moved out with that same color scheme, and the awful 90's floral print. Also in 1999. When I lost the house I lived in from 2004-2008, I just left 'em there.
@mindyroth27827 жыл бұрын
BikerBoyNJ You're a teen who's into pop culture and collects nostalgic items. That's a lot different than a teen who thinks pastel colored southwestern prints are something new and trendy. For instance, one of my son's female friends was showing me "these cool chokers that look like a tattoo!". I explained to her that I wore those in high school and showed her a pic. She looked floored. So, in no way was I calling any teens dumb.

When I was on a school trip, I don't remember where. Somewhere in mid-North Carolina, closer to the mountains. Our hotel was near an old mall. I know because a group of us walked over to mob the dollar store (with a chaperone. We were in middle school). I mean the mall looked in bad shape. I'm not entirely sure the interior was even in use anymore. They were advertising the possible future home of a laser tag operation, and haunted house thing at the mall entrance. I really wish I had had a camera to snap pictures.

Born and raised in Bloomsburg and moved to Honolulu four years ago. Breaks my heart to see this, feel like crying. I remember when there used to be a semi-cool FYE in this mall where you could get movies and records and Titanic posters. We used to always go to the Claire's near one of the exits-there was also a middling pizza shop in that wing that reminded me of a place in the Steamtown/Frackville mall. As a kid my family had an unreliable Pontiac Firebird and I remember going into that very Radioshack to get a cellphone in case we got stuck on I-80. It was a special occasion back then because no one we knew had one. Different times.

I'm really loving your Dead Mall Series Dan! It's so strange to actually "notice" the desolate space. It's creepy, sad and weird all in the same emotion if that makes any sense. All the late eighties and early to mid 90's decor is just wow! I'm sure they don't replace it because of the cost that it would take. Seems like the malls that have this type of decor are more prone to becoming dead because of their lack of updates or something. It's really hard to believe they're no toy stores. no hobby stores, no record stores, this one didn't even have a game store. It's crazy

For those who don't have dead or dying malls in their areas, they are a lot more depressing in person than on video, especially if it is one you grew up going to. There is one in my area that is on a beach that has been featured on various movies and TV series over the years and it also has a Hotel attached to it that was always rather creepy even back when the mall was active. Now the only left inside the mall is a single coffee stand and maybe a small convenience store that is directly in front of the Hotel check in area, otherwise it is nothing but empty display cases and broken dreams.

@nathantroutman22517 жыл бұрын
While the Susquehanna Valley Mall isn't was it used to be, I consider it to be in better shape than most of the malls Dan Bell does. It still is somewhat busy on the weekends and after 4 PM on weekdays. Plus, Route 11/15 is always really busy, so the mall has that going for it.

I find it heartbraking and interesting at the same time. First, I'm not from North America so to learn your culture spending weekend hanging out in a mall (like why?) is interesting. What exactly people with families were doing there? It is just different and interesting because of the difference. Second, it is heartbreaking. I mean, for us now it is easy to say "haha, not trendy, cannot innovate, die", but at one point of time there were people with big plans and dreams were behind a lot of these businesses. And I cannot image how they feel when they see their "babies" go. It is sad.
@RunicLady6 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to explain it exactly, but in the 70s/80s/90s-ish, people either had a lot of disposable income or they had a lot of 'credit'. At this time in American culture we as a whole practically worship consumerism- buying and owning things, having luxurious and fun stuff that 90% of the time was just superficial stuff we didn't need. The things was, a lot of credit was given out back then, very easily. Too easily. People who didn't have money to spend could easily get credit to spend money they didn't have so they too could join in on worshiping consumerism. Because for a while it was so easy/commonplace for people to spend money even if they didn't actually have it, putting a bunch of stores together in one conglomerate that offered a lot to buy in one cool trip was a very profitable venture. I remember as a young child a trip to any mall mean I'd probably get to do something cool like go to an arcade, eat some food our at a restaurant, and maybe I'd get a toy or a video game from one of the stores with my parents. Time have really changed. It seems to me that very few people go out shopping as an activity, and more as a necessity. It's because all of the reckless borrowing/crediting eventually caught up to everyone and there were some really bad crashes that left a lot of people and businesses bankrupt. Now many people have learned their lesson and don't just throw money around, even when they have it.
@yerabbit63335 жыл бұрын
a lot of north american cities aren't laid out in such a way that there's a lot of community spaces, so going to the mall was just a place to go. i grew up in a suburb like that, and there was a downtown but it was far away, so shopping areas were really the only public places you could go and wander around and be social (and see movies, eat, etc)

was it an urbex video? because there is a video where he found drugs in an abandoned apartment building while people were in the room right next to him.

One of the biggest attractions to this mall isThe Player's Guild which is a local card/board game shop. As far as I know it still draws a decent crowd to the mall. This mall faced a lot of challenges but one of it's biggest downfalls was not just losing it's anchors but the fact that less than a mile away, they built a wal mart supercenter with a bunch of smaller outside stores like gamestop.

Looks like that proposed 2008 de-malling was the right call. Everyone scoffed at it.

I moved to the area in 2012. It had all its anchors but was severely lacking in terms of occupied stores. IIRC Victoria's Secret, RadioShack, Godiva Chocolate, Bloom Bounce, a card game shop, Bath and Body Works, Payless Shoes, and Provost shoes, a dance studio, a train hobbyists place, with maybe 1 or 2 more retailers but maybe not. The anchors were Sears, JC Penney, Bon-ton, and Dunham's sports. In the years where I lived in the area, a Subway and buffet opened up and closed. While just about every anchor closed. Sears and RadioShack for obvious reasons. As well as JC Penney and Bonton left. A furniture store took the spot of Sears and is still apparently there. Apparently there is not a Planet Fitness there as well, but it might appears as though the mall is doing some serious reoganizing as it appears to be listed as "temporarily closed". Dunham's sports seems to be doing alright still, but has actually barricaded the entranceway connection between the store and the rest of the mall. Geisinger has previously (maybe still) leased some space as offices. If Geisinger does a full annexation of the space it would be the only savior for this structure. But hey, an Aldi's moved in the lot next door where the old steakhouse used to be, so that's a plus. My friend who still lives there was making skating videos inside the mall and nobody stopped them. Wikipedia states that the owner was not responsive and that the placed formally closed on March 31 2022. I last went to Dunham's in April 2022 so who knows what's to happen with the rest of the structure. Either way, next time I'm in the area I'll do an update.

One of my local dead malls - the Steeplegate Mall in Concord, New Hampshire - converted its closed-down Old Navy space to a bouncy house place for kids' parties. Good way to use vacant store space, I suppose!

This breaks my heart. The Doctor Feel Goode's Pool and Spa store @5:38 used to be the GAP. I was an employee there during my sophomore year of college in 2003-2004 when the mall was always busy. When we'd close up for the night, the Auntie Anne's across the way used to give us any remaining pretzels they had. Thank you for sharing this video, Dan.

You need to head to the Schuylkill Mall sometime in the Summer. They've given their stores a notice of 60-90 days for them to close. You visited when it was still doing pretty well. You want to see dead? Schuylkill Mall will be super dead by the end of summer.

Go up to williamsport pa (about 30 mins from the columbia mall) and do the lycoming mall, JCpennys is closing, macy's just closed, and some of the stores are pretty vacant. There is still life in the mall and a new owner just bought it while it was on the downhill.
