Velvet Revolution: Raw Footage of Soviet Troops Leaving Czechoslovakia (1990)

On 26 February 1990, Czechoslovakian President and face of the Velvet Revolution, Václav Havel met with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow to sign a pact on the total withdrawal of Soviet troops from Czechoslovakia. The same day, ITN crews in Czechoslovakia filmed Red Army troops as the first contingents left the country, bringing to an end the military occupation - called a "temporary deployment" by Soviet leaders - that began with the USSR's violent suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968. This historic footage of Soviet withdrawal is presented alongside footage filmed two days before, on 24 February, of a pre-democracy rally led by Havel in Prague.

Советские оккупанты были просто в шоке, когда их стали выводить из Восточной Европы. Служить в Чехословакии или в ГДР, было и престижно и выгодно экономически. Представляете, если офицера вдруг переводили из например Дрездена, в Забайкальский край, в совершенно дикие места, без всяких удобств, магазинов, где среди военных процветало пьянство и воровство.

I remember growing up in the early 2000s and learning about the Soviet Union. It always seemed so distant, an old enemy, when I got older and learned the Soviet Union collapsed in the 90s, my whole perception of the 20th century changed. The Soviet Union is still a memory to many people.

I remember when the Soviets crushed the Czech uprising the ( Prage Spring) in 1968. The Russians pored about a half a mission troops in there. These people were truly occupied until the Cold War was over. No one in the West foresaw the crumbling of communism or the collapse of the Soviet Union in the time frame that it happened.

This is so odd to watch being on the opposite side of these Troops. Served US Army 88-90 covering Chekloslavakia from West Germany. Also served Berlin Brigade 92-94 and watched the deactivation of both sides.

I live in Frenstat, one of the cities captured in the video. Coincidentally, this is also the city which the Russians left as the first in the republic. There are still parts of the city that were used by them which still have this weird atmosphere to them. You just still can feel that this was once not the usual part of the city.

Как раз 1990 году Чебаркуль передислокацировалос танкисты из Чехословакии. А мы улетели после учебки в Германию. 25 полк Чебаркуль. Механик водитель БМП 8 рота. Казахстан.

Зато Чехия (Чехословакия) поставляла хорошие Vagonka Studenka АЧ-2 дизель поезда пассажирские. В школьнве годы ездил на них и думал что это советские поезда. Но потом вырос и почитал историю. А ещё у меня был знаменитый мотоцикл ЯВА 350 . ЦГВ, ГСВГ ушли из Европы и их место заняло НАТО. Свято место пусто не бывает.

Во время российской оккупации мы находились в застое. И хорошо зарекомендовавшие себя компании 1930-х годов превратились в металлолом. Они были далеки от возможности конкурировать с западными компаниями, которые естественным образом развивались на свободном рынке.

@@josefdvorak6811 Я помню со школы KOH I Noor. Чертежи делал только этими карандашами. А потом были поставки товаров Axis , применяют в московском метро. Те же Hyundai собранные в Чехии были качеством выше. Я был приятно удивлëн. Такая небольшая страна и много качественных вещей, даже элементарные детские мультфильмы не портят психику детям.

Всё Хорошим быть пыжитесь. Немцы из ННА ГДР в 1968 с этими свиньями не церемонились - и те перед немцами на цырлах бегали за версту (по старой памяти). А мы с них не взыскали по полной за зверства Чехословацкого корпуса, Царское Золото и Работу Заводов на Рейх.

I wonder what it was like for them, I mean to have been a part of the Soviet Military. After the fall of the USSR, imagine being like: "I was a soldier of one of the world's greatest Empires. I saw the everyday processes, I saw the propaganda, the riots, all of it. I lived in a time where the world was almost on the brink of destruction- every day. I saw Brezhnev and Gorbachev in the real life".

2 incompetent men 'collapsed' the USSR; Gorbachev and Yeltsin. The former lived a regretful life after that while pretending all was okay. The latter was always too inebriated to know or care.While other nations fight even civil wars to remain united, these 2 men were more than happy to cause divisions. I also remember meeting one Soviet citizen insisting he's not Soviet but Russian and that he loved his county's collapse because "it is very expensive to be a Superpower"!

the soldiers were from all over the ussr so they can be kazaks or tajiks or one of those, oddly enough one of the units that occupied CSSR was the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade which is a brigade based out of transcarpathia in Ukraine and it still is a brigade in the ukrainian army to this day en.wikipedia.org/wiki/128th_Mountain_Assault_Brigade_(Ukraine)

The Soviets also sent Buryats, Yakuts or Bashkirs,... as they do in Ukraine. Because if we send people who look similar and are culturally close, it's more complicated, so strategically they sent Buryats rather than ethnic Russians.

I visited Czech Republic a month ago. The radios play basically only American music (althought they have cool bands like Cechomor), curiously I don't see Czechs complaining about their American masters. Right as good slaves! Quite often Czech women are taken as slaves to certain American publications, something that never happened when USSR/socialism was there.

I live in the Czech republic for more than 4 years. They joined NATO voluntarily, they can also leave at any moment if they wanted to (but the public opinion is against it). Doesn't look like slavery. Also it's funny to read that czech women are slaves to americans or some gibberish like that. I live in cz for more than 4 years and in russia this aspiration among women for westerners is much higher. And the only thing to blame is communism. Planned economy doesn't work, it made its people poor and thus admire the westerners and their way of living. This aspiration for westerners in russia didn't appear after usss's collapse, it was before it. American culture dominated in the late ussr.

Well, many of czechs and slovaks was happy in this time, because "occupant" and "evil communism" has gone. And 3 year later after this Czechoslovakia has gone. RIP Czechoslovakia (1918-1993) But what did the USSR do that was so terrible, besides suppressing the Prague Spring? Which "crimes"? And I'm quite interested in why the Czech government and a significant number of Czechs are quite aggressive towards Russians. The Vrbetice scandal? The disarmament of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia by the Bolsheviks? Don't write to me about the war in Ukraine and Putin, I already know.

I think you're looking at it wrong. In Czechia and Slovakia the issue wasn't necessarily communism in its entirety because Dubcek was a communist. However when Debcek tried to bring some market reform, the USSR invaded and deposed their fellow communist leader. What most ex- Warsaw pact countries don't like is that Russia wasnt concerned about communism but that Russia used communism to subjugate their countries.

Same with Yugoslavia, and USSR itself. They deconstruct cultures and suppress people to force them to unify for "the greater good" which is empowering Moscow. Only when Moscow have secured dependency or loyalty, where they allow some sort of autonomy, take Chechnya for example.

Hi from Russia. When I see Soviet troops of that time, I feel their poor minds but great ritual and order. And two feelings - proud of the scale and sorry for their broken careers. The main idea for us that times was that it were we, who decided to leave what conquered. To change the world. To live in peace. But we and our parents were fool. And were tricked. And the dark times came. A crash of civilization. What is going up till now. What is interesting for me, is a view from Czech side. Were they feeling like a beneficiars? Or they also felt to be tricked and robbed?

I understand your feelings. You lost (I say this without any bad intention). Because I think that we also wished your people that freedom too, democracy, new cooperation, but without a pointed weapon. (We perceived these soldiers only as slaves of the Kremlin, just as we were.)... We had it the other way around. Freedom at last, after 41 years of occupation. An impoverished country after some dubious experiment that someone in the Kremlin called communism, but it was a simple dictatorship. Everything was suddenly in front of us. We had a wild 90s too. Wild privatization. The rule of law has only just begun to be built. And democracy. But we knew we wanted it. We had something to follow up on. On the First Republic (1918-1939). For the Prague Spring. It was a newly charged freedom for us! We can finally rule ourselves. And we knew we wanted to go back to the Europe where we belong...

We, in Russia, didn't expected Czechoslovakians to be slaves. Moreover, You lived better than we, "metropoly". And I do remember history. Of Bohemia (my ancestors were in rule there for centuries), of 30-years war, of late Empire, of Your first (short) republic (spoiled in Munich by European leaders) and Prague spring. The question was - are You really winners and feeling like beneficiars after 30 years or feeling tricked?

@@advohelp We also have stereotypes about Russia. That's what it is good EU project, Schengen... we get to know each other without borders. It doesn't matter that you are a Pole living in the Czechia. It's a shame that we can't get to know Russia like this.... Czechia has never fared better in history. And we are the only ones to blame for our mistakes. And that's probably the difference compared to Russia. You place all the blame on the neighbors, on the USA, on the West and do not look for the blame in yourself.. Even here there are disaffected people. But no one wants to change the regime.. We are the center of Europe, we are probably a very mixed nation with genes. But we speak a Slavic language. We are Slavs. We live well here. (Otherwise we could have done a lot of things better, but that's really just our fault.. we have to correct and be inspired by our good neighbors. Or to be a role model in something.)
