I grew up in the 90s when the lava lamp had come back into style and I'd always been fascinated by them. I'd owned a number of Chinese clone lamps, but the movement of the lava was always disappointing. I then heard about Mathmos and figured since they created the original, they must be good. Very pleased with my purchase, the lava moves all the way from top to bottom! I also think it's really neat that they still make them in the U.K at the same factory, there's not a lot of things you can still buy today that are still made in their home country.

I have a lamp from the 90s and I got it when i was 13. It still works and use it for a dimmer light in the evening. Relaxing to watch at times. I go into spencers time to time and see what they have. Right now I have one next to my desk in my retreat where I spend most of my time. How relaxing this is to watch. Please, never stop making these.

The design is just beautiful. It’s also entertaining to just see. Not to mention that fact that on average it takes less space than that of a desk lamp. The only cons are that the bigger they are, the more power and heat will be needed to just start up the lamp and make it just function similarly to smaller types.

I just bought one for myself at Spencer's. Surprised how inexpensive they were, especially for the regular large size. Mine has purple fluid with orange wax, it really looks like lava that way. Aside from that color combination, I love the clear liquids with all colors of wax.

I didn’t know lava lamps were made in the 60s, but it literally makes perfect sense when you look at lava lamps and the massive psychedelic/hippie/spiritual era. I specifically wanted to get a lava lamp to look at it while tripping and I find it funny that they were made in the 60s making them literally meant for you to chill and trip to

Lava lamps are awesome. Watching the wax/lava blob up and down is hypnotic. Only downside is they're a fire hazard, and I thought the shadows would be affected by the wax blobbing up and down

I bought four to place throughout my house to calm and sooth myself during the COVID19 harsh lockdown period and now in the global uprisings in protests of the horrible murder of George Floyd. Watching these things is very relaxing. They even heat a small room in the winter after 10-hours of use!

I had a lava lamp that was peak 90s. I got it as a Christmas gift from my parents when we went to Sears around Christmas one year. The lava was blue and the liquid clear. The top and base were aquatic themed (dolphins, fish, whales...all swimming in a ocean). The cool thing was the top and base were 3D...not painted or anything. Super detailed. God I loved that thing. Sadly I lost the top and the bottle along the way...still have the amazing base though...I should get a cheap lava lamp and stick it in the base...it won't have the top but it'll be as close as I can get.

My sister purchased a lava lamp once, when her and I used to live together and shared a room. She set the lamp up and turned it on at night. It took a while for the wax to heat up and begin floating inside the lamp, but when it did...I was mesmerized. I remember watching the lamp until I fell asleep, I even would have dreams of the lamp before waking up in the morning. I remember the glow it would give off in the darkness of our room and how the red color of the wax would add to the eerie glow. I personally wouldn't own a lava lamp myself, but I had a cool experience with one when I lived with my sister.

the lamps are also a good example of the term "colloidal solution" where a substance floats in a solution that is the same density. If you jumped onto jupiter you would not hit a suface you would sink down till you reached the level where the gases were your same density. That rules out jumping out of the ship and being burned up by entering at 50,000 miles an hour

@SamTheSoviet42 and bulbs don’t last very long. I go through a bulb somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months. Plus it’s getting harder to find the bulbs because nearly every bulb is LED now which doesn’t work in a LAVA lamp.

I had a lava lamp that... broke? It's hard to describe, but the wax inside just stopped melting like it should. It's like it just broke down. Ended up looking like a candle that melted and it never worked right after that.

I have a really old one that I thought was broken, but I just left it on for a long time, and it eventually moved. If you don't want to do that, you might try taking the bottle out of the base and submerging it in hot water to soften the wax, and then drying it off and putting it back on the base.
