1.6 million people, 53 people died, the “security” was the army. The crowd was the horizon. That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow, Tushino airfield. 1,6 million people saw Metallica, AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera. That was a legendary MoR. The entrance was free.

I went to a class where they did an estimate by multiplying a certain section of the crowd. They estimated the crowd to be at 1.9 million. Not truly scientific, but still. Damn.

The wall had fallen, Russia was coming around, the two greatest countries in the world were finding common ground and starting to make deals. It looked like we were on a decades long upswing. Endless possibilities and prosperity for all. I look out my window now and my only thought is WTF Happened???!!!!

I moved to West Germany in early 1990 (about 6 months after the Berlin Wall came down) & was still living in Germany during the time of this concert. I swear I could feel the ground shaking from the million+ people jumping up & down all the way over in Moscow - LOL! Please check out Metallica's "Creeping Death" at this same show. You will not be disappointed, I promise. 🤘

I was there. It had nothing to do with “freedom”, it was the first opportunity to see Metallica and AC/DC live. Which at the time was a huge thing for somebody like me. Back then I did not know Pantera, but liked what I saw. Please spare us of the “repression” comments and the like nonsense.

fun fact that most people dont get, the reason for the helicopters flying over the crowed so low is because when you have 1.6 million people [which was actually just the number they stopped counting at] all jumping up and down and getting all worked up and breathing hard.. they actually suck all the oxygen out of the air, and the copters are used to circulate fresh air and oxygen into the crowed

That energy is why I love metal. The vibe of a crowd of fans is unreal. My best concert experience was getting to be at arms length from a band in a little dive bar... it's like they're taming lightning in front of your eyes, but only barely in control. You feel the power coming from those amps in your bones. It can be a spiritual experience.

Arms length in a little dive bar, you are right. I was very lucky as far as right place, right time. I've seen countless bands that are legends now at the Fillmore East. Place was a shoe box. I think the seating capacity was about 1300. It was basically an old style movie theatre with a balcony. Saw led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Jimi, Grateful dead (probably like 40 times) and tons of other notable groups. Wasn't a bad seat in the house and I figure most of my hearing loss now is from those days but man what a great time it was.

Can y’all imagine having 3.2 MILLION eyes on u at the same time??? 😳 That had to be one of the most incredible feelings ever to perform in front of a crowd that massive!!!!! Metallica is most definitely, the best rock band ever in my opinion….their music was so raw, their melodies so beautiful and their musicianship just absolutely AMAZING!!!!!

some people would have had only one eye, prevalence of monocular vision is about 1.13 per 1000, which means that there were approximately 1800 people there that only had the use of one eye, whether they had a patch or not covering their bad eye is not known.

Love how people discount Metallica even back then because of the Black Album (which is a kickass album), and say Megadeath is better. Sorry only handful of metal artist and bands can pull that crowd. And Metallica is one of them.

They wanted American rock and roll so much. It had been punishable by jail time to even own it. Had a friend from the Soviet Block. She got out as soon as she could never to return. No politics at this show. Just love of music. We were so close. Now look at us.

I can’t imagine the energy they get from a crowd like that 😊 I would be terrified to be in that crowd.. James Hetfield is the lead singer. I saw Metallica open for Ozzy in the late 80’s right before Metallica started headlining their own shows. It was at Joe Lewis arena in Michigan. I have been to a lot of concerts but Metallica and Ozzy are by far the best concert I’ve been to 😊

I've attended airshows which had 250,000 people in the crowd. You dont know how many people are there unless you can somehow get above eye level. It just appeared to me as a big crowd. Wasn't until reading the newspaper the next day was I made aware of the size of the crowd. It did takes an army of buses and hours to load up and transport everybody off the airfield once the event was over. As we parked throughout the city.

I watched Metallica in concert in 1989 in Seattle. Best concert I’ve ever been to, but, two years later, this concert in Moscow Russia definitely beats that to hell. Mind blowing. 1.6 million Russians/Ukrainians/Eastern Europeans going crazy during this concert. It was epic.

Many of those people bought tickets, it sold out but so many additional people showed up, without any they let them all in at that point. It was in a big airfield so it was hard to keep them all out using temporary barriers over such a large area.

It was an amazing show with an amazing story behind it with this taking place 3 short months before the official dissolution of the Soviet Union. The Soviet people really let their hair down and had an amazing time at this show. James Hetfield (Metallica's frontman) has said in interviews that while he was on stage and playing during this show, he could not stop staring at the helicopters and was petrified that one was going to malfunction and crash into the crowd. Thankfully that didn't happen and this show was one for the history books.

More than 300,000 spectators attended the concert. Order was provided by more than 11,000 soldiers of the internal troops, police and cadets. 76 people applied for medical help, according to the Main Department of Internal Affairs, 51 people were hospitalized, according to the "Ambulance" - 53 people, including 16 military personnel (mostly with craniocerebral injuries). Forty people were arrested for the offenses.
