"The Final Countdown" is a song by the Swedish rock band Europe, released as the lead single from their third studio album of the same name in 1986. Written by the band's lead vocalist Joey Tempest, it is one of Europe's most iconic songs and became a major commercial success, reaching the top of the charts in several countries.
The song is known for its distinctive synthesizer riff, which was composed by Tempest on a borrowed keyboard in the early 1980s. The lyrics were inspired by David Bowie's song "Space Oddity" and touch on themes of leaving Earth and heading into space, making it a powerful anthem with a sense of adventure and escapism.
"The Final Countdown" was released on February 14, 1986, and quickly gained massive popularity. It topped the charts in 25 countries, including the UK, Sweden, and Germany, and reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The song's success helped propel the band to international fame.
The music video for "The Final Countdown" features the band performing the song in concert, interspersed with footage of the band members and various special effects. The energetic performance and the use of pyrotechnics in the video contributed to its popularity on music television channels like MTV.
"The Final Countdown" has become a staple of 1980s rock music and is often used in sports events, commercials, and other media due to its anthemic and uplifting quality. It is widely recognized for its powerful and catchy synthesizer riff and remains a favorite among fans of the band and the genre.

I will never forget: a school friend of mine was a massive fan back in the 80ties and she especially adored the lead singer. She always had a photo of him in her wallet . One day she showed it to a class mate and she asked: is this your mother? Haha, we totally lost it..

Joey Tempest, who came up with the riff, is the singer and front man, so the guy playing the keyboards on stage did not come up with it. Also, the original lead guitar guy in the band, Jon Norum, was upset they were becoming a synth band rather than a heavy metal band, so he quit right when they reached the top and was replaced by Kee Marcello who then played lead guitar for most of their peak years. At some point the band broke up, and when they reunited a few years later Jon Norum was back. They’re still touring.

I believe Europe would have been even bigger if they got that breakthrough earlier, because glam rock era started to fade out in the end of the 80s with so many band with the same sound, grunge took over.

Europe was formed in Sweden by singer Joey Tempest (born Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) in the late 70's as the band Force w/ John Norum (guitar)... Changed their name to Europe w/ John Leven (bass) joining before releasing their debut album in Sweden in 1983... followed by their 2nd album 'Wings of tomorrow' in 1984. Signed internationally in 1986, Europe expanded their line-up w/ Mic Michaeli (keyboards) and Ian Haughland (drums) and their sound incorporated 80's arena rock for their 3rd album 'The Final Countdown'... the album and single became a massive hit worldwide, selling 3x platinum in the US alone... The music video of 'The Final Countdown' edited out the last half-minute of the song (Joey Tempest wrote the song and the synth intro... he showed it to Mic Michaeli who played it in the studio) Despite more hit singles from the album - 'Carrie' ... 'Cherokee' ... 'Rock the night'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 guitarist John Norum was unhappy w/ the band's new sound and quit... Kee Marcello (guitar) joined Europe and did the tour. The problem was that 'The Final Countdown' was so huge and iconic that Europe couldn't follow it up... In 1988, they released their 4th album 'Out of this world'... but fans who expected "Final countdown Pt. 2" were disappointed... Singles like - 'Superstitious' ... 'Open your heart' ... 'More than meets the eye'... did not fare well and the album stalled at 1x platinum sales and a US tour slated for 1989 never happened as a result. Europe tried again in 1991 w/ 5th album 'Prisoners in paradise'... but the 90's grunge and alternative rock era decimated their popularity and record sales failed to reach gold (half million copies)... The tour was a disappointment and Europe opted to split up by 1992. In 1999, Europe did reunite to play 'The Final Countdown' for the new millennium countdown on New Year's Eve... and the classic Europe (Tempest/ Norum/ Leven/ Michaeli/ Haughland) finished a new album 'Start from the dark' in 2004 ... and began touring again. However, the subsequent new records by Europe fared poorly because of their new sound in contrast to their 80's hit albums. Still, Europe has persisted making new music and touring... their last album was 'Walk the Earth' in 2017 and they are working on a new album due out soon.

Europe sold millions of albums, Joey Tempest (singer) said in a live interview that he was still in school and borrowed a keyboard from a buddy and he was only 16/17 years old when he came up with the keyboard riff, he didn't even think it was going become a massive hit till today. In this video he was in his 20's. And of course the hair, which he was known for, the record company and MTV told him to go more bigger with the hair as they became more famous, it was that era . They have many great songs like *Carrie*, *Open your Heart*, *Cherokee*, *Superstitious*, I personally also love Europe's self-titled debut album 1983, love the older songs on that album especially *Seven Doors Hotel* he said he's very happy living in the UK with his wife and kids they and he's still touring. Another Legend band a must see live reaction and will leave you speechless, check out this one from *Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark (En Vivo!) 4K* Thank you for the reactions, I enjoyed it. You guys are awesome 👍

I loved this song, but it always bugged the heck out of me that that they say they are going to Venus, which is literally next door to Earth, and then ruin it with: "So many Light Years to go" Auugh. That's like saying "I'm going into the kitchen, which we both know is 10 feet away from the living room, but then adding: "damn, it's going to take a long time to go the 25 trillion miles from the living room to the kitchen"

What do you mean that they gave the keyboard player 'no shine' or 'no love'? You hear him throughout the whole song. The intro and hook is all him! It wouldn't be a hit if he wasn't playing that hook during it's entirety. You only hear the guitar player when he gets to play his solo. I can barely make out the guitar lines because the keyboard is the main instrument. And, this isnt 'glam metal', it's 'pop metal'. Glam guys wore a lot of make up, sequins and their girlfriend's clothes. These guys are wearing blue jeans and leather.

So, if interested give this one a listen, if interested. "Dire Straits - Telegraph Road Live - aLCHEMY Tour 1983" (by the channel: Rock is Highlife) --This song by British rock band Dire Straits is from their album called "Love Over Gold." This enthralling tune written by Marc Knopfler weaves a tale of a man's journey and the transformation of a wilderness into a bustling community. This is a fan favorite for many. (I know it's one of my personal favorites And as always, I enjoyed rocking with you guys. Thanks for sharing.
