It was released as his debut single on 13 September 2013, originally featuring on his extended play of the same name, before being featured as the opening track of his 2014 debut album Hozier.

Empathy is certainly a good word for how that video (hopefully) makes you feel! If we all walked a mile in someone else's shoes the world would be a much happier (and safer) place. Great reaction.

Loved your reaction to this amazing song and video. Hozier's songs are deep, his voice is perfection and those choir harmonies are moving. Try 'Cherry Wine' ... also deep.

It's not that times have changed- it's that there are many countries that say they are Catholic/Christian and have laws that make homosexuality still illegal, such as Russia. It's saying you are hypocritical- while telling people 'not to judge, you are judging ' and there are a lot of starving people in the world in Catholic countries who are faithful to the church, focus on them. Look at 4.09 it's specifically highlights Russia because it was having the winter Olympics at the time of this song and in a few years time followed by the biggest event on the planet, the football world cup which it was saying all are welcome at the time- when in reality why would you feel safe going if you are gay?

This is the Russian connection: “At the time, there were these horrendous attacks that were taking place against members of the LGBTQ community in Russia. There had been an increase in attacks carried out by essentially Neo Nazi gangs against LGBTQ youths. They posed as other LGBTQ youths in chatrooms and message boards to lure 14, 15, 16-year-olds to places where they thought that they would be safe and they attacked them and filmed those attacks and would torture them on camera and post those on social media. “That was where Take Me To Church came from. It was discrimination against people in same sex relationships and that song managed to cross borders and it seemed to resonate with people across a wide space. “If you’re writing songs and you are honest with it and believe in what it is you are writing and you are willing to live and die by it surely your hope is that the more people hear that the better." Nothing to do with the olympics.

The box represents their love, the bind they have , a bond that can’t be broken by those who hated them for who they r. That is why in end where they r at the fire trying to break into it and can’t signifies again their strong love and bond. Since they couldn’t break into it, they threw it in the fire basically we damned you to the burning pits of hell since we can’t convert you. That is what some so-called Christians think of the LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 community. The same Christians who worship a GOD who doesn’t discriminate and judge but they are.
