Broke four bones in my palm and sprained my wrist while skating in downtown Houston the other day. I truck was coming and it didn’t look like they were gonna stop so I bailed and caught myself with my wrist. A wrist guard would have prevented both the 4 fracture and the sprain. I’m an advanced skater and I still recommend using all of your protective gear because you just never know what’s gonna happen

I had started skateboarding again after 38 years, with 51 right now.. And i crashed very hard at my 1st session, head forward...(too loose bushings) Thankfully i got my wrist guards, helmet and knee-/ elbow protectors on.. My left shoulder and my left leg do hurt now the second day...But i got no serious injuries. Wear your safety stuff! Best regards from Germany.

I sprained my ankle the first time taking my first new skates in 25 years to the rink. I've been back in skates for a week now. I had wrist guards on, when I went flying I definitely slid on them.

The mermaid fall is only a possibility in a limited number of situations. I have skated for over 20 years and have fallen in a wide variety of unpredictable circumstances where reflexes and training don’t help at all. In half of my falls, the only thing that has saved me has been my body armor. For example, recently, on a pair of rollerblades, while skating at 15 mph, a screw detached from my right wheel frame and, instantly, I was on thrown foreword and sideways, rolling over my shoulder. Many times I have slid on my wrist guard plates in a somewhat controlled slide. But a few years ago, I fell forward at an odd angle, on a wet surface, with my wrist guards outstretched and a finger hit the concrete at the wrong angle and dislocated. Yesterday, I received in the mail, the (long) Flexmeter wrist guards you showed in the video. Having tried them on, I am not convinced that they are the solution I am looking for. I think they may flex too much. In a high speed crash, I could imagine breaking a wrist while wearing them. Also, they are bulky, awkward and ugly. Nonetheless, wearing wrist, knee, elbow and head protection is essential if you care about preserving your health and your ability to skate for a lifetime. Beginners, especially, need to be completely protected. I have bought many pairs of brand new skates from beginners, who wrecked their bodies and gave up skating for good. And that is a shame.

I highly doubt that wrist guards inrease the likelyhood of radial or ulnar fractures. Just like wrist injuries those happen a lot from falling straight on an extended wrist. I worked in Hand therapy and had many cyclists come in with such cases. The guard would propably absorb some of the force of the impact and also allows you to slide, reducing the blunt trauma further. That protection should also apply to reduce your risk of fractures higher up the forearm. Lastly, i would gladly take a radial fracture over a wrist fracture. It seems to heal with lese complications.

I second that last sentence! Ive buckled my right wrist three times and twice it was extremely close to my growth plate and I genuinely feel like one arm is shorter.
@Impedancenetwork
@Impedancenetwork Жыл бұрын
I agree with that Last sentance. I broke my Radius bone in my forearm when I went over my handle bars. I broke my arm but only hurt my wrist. After 8 weeks my arm was fine, but my wrist still hurt and still had swelling and lack of mobility for 6 more weeks. Injuring your wrist sucks more than a broken arm.

I'm a slalom skater in Australia and I was trying speed skating a couple of years ago and the old speed skaters talked about that urban myth, and one of them had a broken lower arm at the time and claimed it broke exactly the way the myth describes. I'm a bit sceptical about it but happy to be proven wrong. Love your channel, I've skated all my life and I can't count how many broken wrists I have seen over the decades, one thing that always surprises me is how kids and adults that are starting out and really fall over alot don't wear protection, especially if it's a very large heavy person that can't skate and maybe is not used to any athleticism and so does not know how to fall and are not flexible and fast enough to have safe reflexes. One reflex I try to encourage people to develop is to try and take the impact off a fall by changing a slam into a slide or roll. What causes damage on impact is your body slamming against concrete, so if you are falling on the ground or whatever, and you have wrist guards or protection, slide a little.

Helmets, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, are all crucial for safety. Without these pads you can scrape really bad from a fall and get badly injured. All of these are worth the money easily

I think to break the upper wrist you need a lot of force which rarely occurs in inline skating since you would slide forward instead of having to caught your momentum with your wrist. I think the myth emerged from snowboarding, where you can probably break your upper wrist due to wrist guards when you caught your front edge so you fall down downhil and catch yourself with your wirst guards. I can definitly see a broken upper wrist with stiff wrist guards. But i never experienced hits like that with inline skating (unless i skate downhill into a tree, but even then i cant see how i break my upper wrist there).
@benja1378
@benja1378 Жыл бұрын
Literally broke my wrist 3 weeks ago as I fell backwards on a ramp and absorbed most of the impact with my wrists (glad it wasn't my spine tho!). But it seems wrist guards wouldn't have helped in that scenario as you can't bend your wrist and either crush your fingers or fall on your arms/back.
@bernsahr
@bernsahr Жыл бұрын
@@benja1378 you can totally break your wrists without wrist guards the point mentioned in the vid is that you can break the bones above your wrists while wearing wrist guards since the damage is distributed upwards to the elbow but this scenario just wont happen in inline skating (unless you decide to do some hammers like in the old times, dropping from 3m+) since the sliding on asphalt will absorb a lot of the damage

I'm looking to buy a pair online, since I don't know any shop close by and don't wanna go far. I fear they will KEEP my wrist somewhat flexed. From my past experience with one which I bought because my wrist was hurting from notebook/keyboard use, the semi flexed position was exactly what was causing me pain. I would like one that allows me to keep them straight most of the time (some flexibility would be good too)

MOST WOMEN’S anatomy is different from men’s, particularly for the upper body- the CHEST. Women have more bodyweight in the chest, and tend to fall forward (arms/hands first) more than men. So the “fall on your knees” advice probably will not work for many women, due to these body/anatomy physics. For this reason, and for NON-aggressive blading, wrist guards probably are the MOST important rollerblade protection FOR WOMEN. Then the helmet and knees, etc. I’ve been recreational - not aggressive, not speed- blading since late 1980s, and in several countries, and this has been true for me. Thanks.

Am girl, I just land on one side of my ass (so I don't land on the tailbone) with hands pulled in to be out of the way, that's what most video tutorials and even instructors local to here seem to teach, idk what this guys obsession with pushing the mermaid technique is.

@MrMokey24
@MrMokey24 Жыл бұрын
@@theprismaticsystem2833 The mermaid should teach you to plant your butt and legs to the ground as to minimize the amount of impact your arms have to take, for faster falls you could roll over your back , swinging your legs upwards over your head. The very best falling technique you are going to learn if you watch aggressive skaters fall, they have the most experience falling. They don't really use their arms to soften their falls at all most of the time.

I've tried wearing wrist guards, but I found my grinds felt wrong. I find when I'm grinding and holding a position my hands need to go into different positions for each trick otherwise i can't stay balanced and the wrist guards limit the movement of my hands and wrist too much. I do wear knee pads now and find they are great I can forget they're on and just do my thing I've got the core pro gasket knee pads and I'd highly recommend them. P.s. if anyone is looking at ennui wristguards they fit small in my opinion!

Not an urban myth. I've done it in the 90s. But I fell an entire story skating out of a mall being chased by security. Jumping down a whole story down into the carpark. I clipped the railing I was jumping and fell head first, used my hands to save my head. Something was bound to break and it was my arm at the end of the guard. Better than my wrist or head, but it happens.
