It’s the new eye-opening series which sees six Brits, each living with obesity, travel the globe to find out why obesity rates are increasing around the world and better understand the relationship between food, culture and body size - and in the process see if they can lose weight along the way. Today, we meet three of them, Russell and Marisa, a married couple desperate to lose weight so that they can start a family, alongside Sue, the show’s oldest contributor at 57 desperate to finally shift the weight she's always struggled with.

C4 really put the effort into making this programme well rounded and thoughtful, not holding back on the trickier topics that actually enable obesity. There's so much folk can learn from cultures beyond a person's individual cultural, media and lifestyle bubbles - councils and governments have a lot to learn too when it comes to making health more accessible.

To be honest Japan have got it bag on right. If we are to adopt the technological advancements that make our life easier but make us move less, e.g. cars, trains, buses, desk jobs, and eat more, e.g. shops with food readily available to us, then we need to put strict practices in place to counter balance these added conveniences to ensure we keep ourselves healthy and moving as nature intended humans do. If you are to sit at your desk all day, then a brief period of light exercise should be mandatory to prevent postural injuries and also combat the lack of movement. If we have food available to eat all day and night long, we should have our waists measured to hold us accountable to not over eat. Obesity has become the consequence of benefitting from convenience without enforcing any restrictions. As a nation we have become very lazy. The stress of modern life makes us feel like it's okay to reward ourselves all the time but the truth is we need more discipline and need to realise life is about struggle and suffering as much as it is about enjoyment. If we were out hunting and scavenging in the wild, we would sometimes go days walking miles without food. And our bodies are built to be able to deal with this. But today, if someone doesn't have breakfast we act like they are punishing themselves and starving themselves to death. Or if they run 5k we make passing comments like god, i don't know how they do it or why they put themselves through it. Even though in the wild we would naturally go longer than a morning without food and run further than 5k hunting, or running away from a predator over the course of the day. We have become very blind and detached from our natural way of living and very soft, weak and fragile. We need more discipline. You are not a victim, you are living a thing called life that comes with as much suffering as it does pleasure. If you are eating too much and not moving enough for short term pleasure then you are doing life wrong and will have to deal with the consequences of your choices, which will be obesity, disease, low self esteem and mental illness. Yes, enforce those hard rules on yourself that lead to a bit of short term suffering if you want the benefit of long term mental and physical health and resilience. Life is hard but the suffering is what makes the pleasure worth it.

Most of the things they said about Japan were not true. "Eating up to 80% full" is a stereotype of OKINAWA, not all of Japan and most Japanese don't use chopsticks for everything (They use spoons usually for fried rice, Japanese curry, etc and knives and forks for other types of food, etc). Even if they do use chopsticks, some people here (such as kids, working class people or workers on their lunch breaks) might shovel food into their mouths with chopsticks to eat their food quickly. Japan also had loads of junk food. Most convenience stores sell hot food, such as fried chicken, hash browns, fried chips, etc, and the readymeals/TV dinners (curry, pasta, chow mein, etc) can be cooked by the staff for you and are high in calories. Most packets of crisps over here are also "family size", as they're "meant" for groups (so you can't really buy regular sized packets). There are also a fair amount of overweight people living here too. Not all jobs measure your waist or do exercises either (none of mine do). We do get health checks by some employers though. Also, it's impolite to not finish all of your food in Japan. Some restaurants have signs telling people to not waste their food. I've never seen anyone in Japan leave food on their plates.

It's processed food, accessibility to an abundance of food, lack of movement. This has only became a problem post war.

Wow. That Japan segment was unbelievably exaggerated bordering on completely WRONG! The Japanese are taught to eat everything on their plate. They just don’t fill their plate to the brim. Throwing away rice is a total no go! The measuring the waist is part of a yearly health check. Not a daily thing!

Genetics play a small role. It’s the lifestyle that pulls the trigger. I’m glad to know how they are trying to prevent the life threatening diseases. It may seem harsh but it’s needed for a good quality of life

You don’t get this big unless you eat processed junk all day. Doing so you’ll constantly feel hungry because of the poor nutritional content of processed junk - which overall costs more than fresh ingredients - and thusly over eat. Once you become a little larger, exercise becomes harder, so you spiral down into gross obesity. To get out is a massive challenge….

If they walked a mile every day, they’d be a normal weight. It might take a year or two or maybe even three years but no need to diet or look at the scales, just move your body

True but remember not everyone can due to physical disability etc, but I take your point most people could perhaps do this. Apparently diet is important too.
