Plastic Putty Knife
Drill with masonry bit

Shopping List:
14” Rough-In Toilet
Flange Repair Kit
Wax Ring
Flexible Supply Hose
Closet nuts and washers
Steps:
1. A standard toilet has a 12” rough in dimension- the distance from the wall to the toilet bolts.
2. If the new toilet location differs from standard, a 10” or 14” rough in toilet can be ordered to better fit.
3. Before doing any plumbing work, ensure water is off at the toilet and the tank and bowl are drained.
4. Remove the closet nuts holding the toilet to the floor.
5. Carefully remove the toilet.
6. Remove the old wax ring from the closet flange.
7. If the existing flange doesn’t have space to accommodate the new bolts, use a flange repair kit.
8. Use the wax ring to make a connection between the closet flange and the flange repair kit.
9. Secure the flange repair kit to the floor using a hand screwdriver.
10. Add a longer flexible supply hose to the shut off valve.
11. Bring the toilet in and ensure both bolts on the flange repair kit go through the bolt holes on the toilet.
12. Attach the toilet to the flange using a washer base, closet bolt, and bolt cap. The closet bolt may need to be cut off if too high.
Resources:
The American Standard Cadet Pro Compact Right Height Elongated Toilet 14" Rough-In can be found at the local plumbing supply store.

The additional flange adaptors, wax ring, and masonry screws can be found at the local home center.

pippensculps mines a high performance toilet. It got some pretty sick upgrades. It’s got a larger tank, some custom billet internals, and some new drag racing washers and deep dish nuts to hold it on (Edit) I just got done installing a new racing seat and a five point harness to keep me up for the long ones.

In an older toilet installation the off set is 14”...when i replace older with newer toilet and 12” off set, i simply make a “frame” out of 2x4’s laid against the wall flat, screw to wall as high and wide as I want, screw a piece of 1/2” sheetrock on frame, paint and texture if needed, replace H2O supply pipe with longer one to come through sheetrock, cut a piece of 3/4” white pine a little wider than the 2x4 frame and approximately 3” wide to accommodate deodorant, shampoo etc. but not so wide i will hit my back on it while sitting on the new toilet, I will usually use my router to make a nice fancy finished edge on front and side(s) that show if necessary, use finish nails to anchor the new shelf to the 2x4 frame, paint it with glossy paint and now the toilet lid fits right up against the new ‘wall” with a new shelf area behind the toilet.

The test flush is funny. We were setting fixtures at this custom home. It was this woman’s dream home. This is a town of 3,000 people in west Texas so I never once saw a port a potty on a job site even out in the country. You just went in the trees and if it was #2, you kept TP on your truck. If you were in town you either hid or went to a store or home. I quickly set the toilet and then peed. 5 min later the woman came to look at everything. I believe her exact quote was “y’all better not use them, this is my dream home so I get to baptize them myself”. Of course my response was “absolutely, we would never”.

Thanks for the video. How a toilet can be repositioned, let's say 1 feet away from current position?
@catsmeow5566
@catsmeow5566 2 жыл бұрын
My concern with this is how little elbow room you have on the side. It was small before on the other side but it is not much better, IMO. A corner toilet would come in handy in this situation. Set it diagonal and it is easier to reach tp holder and you get a little more leg room. You can turn a standard toilet at an angle but you get gap behind in the corner. I am concerned with how high the new flange is and how small the cone going in to the toilet is. That will restrict flow and I worry the toilet won't sit flush to the floor.

As a kid growing up in the 80's I always admired This Old House. Now being a licensed 20 year professional some of these video make me cringe because uneducated public doesn't know any better. Its common knowledge in the industry that 15" is the MINIMUM from center of a toilet to any fixture or wall on either side. The reason this toilet is not resting on the floor @6:15 is because the closet flange is too high. Finally, it IS CODE to caulk the toilet to the floor.....keep making videos like this this please because it will only give Professionals more work fixing these disasters.

GoodtimesDJsoundtech where do you live where it’s code to caulk the toilet to the floor? And also you ideally should have centered the toilet in the opening, but there isn’t actually a code that says 15” minimum in most states. And in some states it wouldn’t pass inspection with a 2” gap behind toilet tank.

Just out of curiosity.. As far as i saw in these videos, in usa you use pvc pipes without any seal, glue them together and use wax rings for connections to toilet etc, correct? In EU (at least in germany), we have special PVC pipes with rubber selas / o-rings at the end. No need to glue, just push them together. Same goes for toilet or shower, you insert a pvc pipe into the toilet outlet (with a big rubber ring / seal) and the other end into the drainage pipe (which has it's own seal). Seems to me to be way easier.. Or am i missing something?

For comfort while sitting on a toilet you want a minimum of 15 from the wall to center (right and left). This toilet now has only 12 inches on the left while sitting down. So, you're going to lean one way while sitting. Yeah, I know it's better than it was but, you've just traded one uncomfortable dimension for another.

With this kind of rotation, instead of the center of a persons’s body being 14 “ from the right hand wall, they are now 12” from the left wall.. that will be very uncomfortable unless the old partition wall is removed. Even the previous 14 “ was too close for proper comfort.

I wonder where that house is located that doesn’t have plumbing codes. I have never seen anywhere in the U.S. that would allow the toilet to pass a plumbing inspection (in either installed positions). You would think a reputable magazine would inform its readers to always follow the plumbing codes.

The only reason a offset flange is so called illegal is because you can't get a caulking tool in half of the flange to make a good and proper lead joint .so on to abs or plastic flanges the offset does not choke off the 3 " minimum size and you are able to get a good glue joint so there now ya know

I always grout under my toilet, showers, or tubs. It completely eliminates rocking or loosening from non-level flooring. Plus it supports the fixture and eliminates future cracking, especially in fiberglass fixtures.

Everyone saying the toilet is too close to the wall, I ask do you shit sitting in the living room and flush in bathroom? Toilet looks fine. Old one was literally hugging the wall. If it's a code issue, they could easily get an exemption due to how old so 8 was for wheelchair access and there's no demolition involved

Do y'all recommend caulking around the base of the stool or not caulking? I've always run a bead of caulk around the base to keep any moister out that might get under in the event of a toilet over flow but never see any pro's do it, why?
@williamreynolds7194
@williamreynolds7194 3 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the "pros", but I've been a landlord for decades. Depending on the caulk, especially silicone, dirt collects in the soft material and looks filthy. And it's a pain to clean up when a new toilet is installed. As to toilet overflows, if they are due to a clogged trap, the caulk may help. But if it's due to a clogged 4" line I would rather see an early sign, like water leaking past the wax gasket, especially on wood floors. The bathtub normally fills with waste first on a clogged 4" line. If you want to caulk, I would leave a 4-6" gap at the back of the bowl.
@AStanton1966
@AStanton1966 2 жыл бұрын
I believe it's code in California to caulk around any toilet on a tile floor. Personally, I think you are better off not using caulk. If the wax ring ever fails, you might see the water seepage beginning and catch it before it destroys the floor.

My Fiance owned a cape cod home built in 1943. The toilet flange seemed to be quite far off the wall. In fact, there was probably a 6" gap between the back of the tank and the wall. To top it off, it was an elongated toilet! Talk about a crammed bathroom! Was this normal for old construction to have the flange so far away from the wall?
@augustreil
@augustreil 5 жыл бұрын
No, someone probably didn't know what they were doing or a remodel occurred and they didn't want to move the waste pipe ?
@Guillotines_For_Globalists
@Guillotines_For_Globalists 5 жыл бұрын
Bathroom was in the same place as with all of the other neighboring cape cod homes in that area, so I doubt they moved the bathroom wall. Dimensions of the bathroom were also the same. She remodeled the bathroom, tile floor, tile tub surround, new vanity, mirror, cabinet, etc. In hind sight, an offset toilet flange would have helped but we didn't think about it at the time. I really don't care for elongated toilets, especially in small bathrooms. Anyway, I'm about the only person that has ever noticed or mentioned how far the toilet tank was away from the wall. But honestly, we were able to paint the wall behind the toilet entirely without moving the toilet. Talk about a gap!

How necessary are spacers? I keep seeing TOH use them in videos. If it we're my house I wouldn't care if the toilets off level by a fraction of an inch. I prefer it to be snug and flat on the floor vs having that nasty gap and teetering on those spacers Everytime I take a dump.

DesecratedReaper Was Those shims are more for stopping the toilet from rocking and not leveling, as many new toilets are not baked flush at the bottom and tile floors are not flat half the time either

Almost six months back we changed the wax ring and now it is again leaking from the roof. After close observation I found that it is leaking only when I sit on the toilet seat and flush. The handyman came and flushed 10 times but couldn't find any leaking. Now he want to cut the sealing to see what is exactly happening. Can any of you advise me what could be the exact problem here? Is there any way to fix this problem without cutting the sealing?
@AStanton1966
@AStanton1966 2 жыл бұрын
I'm no plumber and think your problem is probably solved by now--1 year later. If it wasn't, I was going to recommend a product called Perfect Seal Toilet Wax Ring that you can buy at any big box store. I'm guessing your flange might be too low. This product can be used for flanges below and at floor height. I only thing I would recommend about this product is to replace the Johnny Bolts that come with it. They are plated steel and will rot. Swap them out with brass ones. Otherwise I think this is a good product.

Many adapters do, especially the ones that slide inside of the old flange. NOT GOOD! They're going to have to use that plunger, on top of the newer low flow toilet.
