I remember Norm doing all the woodworking in the past with all the regular carpentry and such that Mr. Silva does I find it really special to see him enjoy woodworking projects just as it seems he does his regular work.

Never wear ties or loose clothing around a lathe. Learned that from Tool Time.

Tom saying the first time he used a lathe was “in high school, 15 or 16” my brain filled in “years ago” instead of “years old”

I made a shallow change bowl in 8th grade woodshop on a lathe.. I remember carving a shallow groove on the side and using a coat hanger attached to 2 blocks (like a garrote) to burn into the groove for design. I wonder if my jr high offers woodshop, I am surprised they let us use band saw, routers, jigsaws etc as like 13-14 year olds. This was back in 96-97

People give Kevin a lot of flack, but he is the intermediary for us, the viewers. He asks the questions we would ask and actually tries new skills.

This is single handedly the most dangerous project I've seen on TOH. Imagine a run of the mill homeowner who has trouble using a wrench do this....

I work with metal lathes and milling machines, i dont really consider wood lathes to be that dangerous in comparison since they are made to be smooth cause they know that you will be using your hands and not a carbide on a tool post

We all did fine in 8th grade woodshop using a lathe in 1996 and we were far from pros... I also wouldnt think a run of the mill homeowner would own a lathe and if they did they would probably be somewhat informed about using a lathe.

Hmm I seem to remember no long sleeves or accessories allowed when using a lathe, first thing you learn lol
@Wroom90
@Wroom90 4 жыл бұрын
Dang it. Good observation. I was told the same, or to cover the sleeves with wearing a thick leather-glove to cover the sleeve. The most important thing with lathes tho I think would be to not wear clothing that doesn't tear easily. Most horror-stories evolving lathe-accidents in this category is when people wear clothing made out of strong textiles.
