Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien talk to Dave Fanning about making Hail to the Thief, the album's politics and problems with editing, and working with a record company. They also discuss working with the mighty producer Nigel Godrich, as well as how their music has progressed but has not been part of a scene (they are working in a vacuum). Thom admits he couldn't work alone...he'd never finish anything!

feel like people hate beacuse it was the most experimental record. every song sounded very different. i think its one of their best just cuz of how raw and unedited the whole album is

Maybe it’s because I’m not much of an aficionado on album adhesion, but it bothers me that people dislike Hail to the Thief for all the songs sounding different. All the songs on White Album sound different and that’s considered legendary. Anyway I love Hail to the Thief. Wolf at the Door, Myxomatosis, and 2+2 are some of my favorite RH songs.

What does Ed do? Try removing his tracks from Radiohead songs and it sounds empty. He is the sole backing vocalist (Phil is not even audible live) and his guitar parts are extraordinarily tricky. He doesn't need awesome solo's to be a fantastic guitarist.

"The Gloaming" would have been a better album name, fits well with "The King of Limbs" (maybe Thom's attempt to eliminate the old title lol). It makes more sense with the rest of their catalog, but I think it was purposeful to distinguish the album: it had a raw quality that no other Radiohead album has ever quite achieved (or really aimed for).

Hail to the thief will forever be Radiohead’s greatest album ever. As a Radiohead fan people always say Ok Computer is the best album ever or Kid A is the best album ever. I love both!!! They’re both amazing records but hail to the thief just hits me hard and have a strong emotional connection to that glorious protest album. Made during my birth year 2003 when Bush was destroying America and the government brought corruption at its worst and still terrible to this day war is happening rn in Russia and Ukraine and America is freaking out and I’m scared. Hail to the thief brings me comfort and joy everytime I listen to it. I can feel the raw aggressive protest lyrics and heavy experimental songcraft and each song is different, from rock to electronica to blues, RnB, everything in one album with a strong message that still holds up of today Hail to the thief is their greatest album ever made!!! ******My opinion*****

If you were going to do that I would put in 'I will' in between 'the gloaming' and 'sail to the moon', great little track, when he sings "I won't let this happen to my children" it's electrifying. Really though, I think that it's perfect in the way the white album was a perfect sprawling mess.

HTTT is their best work, love it up and down. A lot of tracks, sure, but unlike most people, I find every single track besides one I suppose (I Will) to be at least exceptional, and the majority of them to be sheer brilliance. Myxomatosis and Where I End are my two favorite Radiohead songs. Awesome stuff, and for the life of me I will never understand why so many people (including the band themselves, evidently) dislike it or think of it so low.

"please respond" /mu/? anyways, they didn't say they didn't like it, just that it's a little flawed and overstuffed, which i would agree with. Thom put out his own personal tracklisting of Hail to the Thief and it flows much better, here it is: 1. There There 2. The Gloaming 3. Sail to the Moon 4. Sit Down. Stand Up. 5. Go to Sleep 6. Where I End and You Begin 7. Scatterbrain 8. 2 + 2 = 5 9. Myxomatosis 10. A Wolf at the Door

I think, "editing" also means deciding which tracks are on it and it which order and stuff to them. And I have to say, although the album only contains amazing songs, and even some of my favourite songs of all time are on the record, as an album it is not as a good listen as A Moon Shaped Pool or Kid A is. The ladder ones really have a dynamic that makes them work as an album, not just as a collection of songs.
@Welcometotheslam5424
@Welcometotheslam5424 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure they're referring to the tracklisting, which has been criticized by many(including Radiohead themselves) as being overly bloated. Hell, a revised tracklisting posted on Citizen Insane by Thom Yorke himself removed 4 tracks(I Will - We Suck Young Blood - A Punchup At A Wedding - Backdrifts) and changed the order of the remaining 10 drastically, such as putting There There as the opening track, not 2 + 2 = 5

Music is creativity and has avenues facilitated by a machine that is extremely liberal with the domestic tranquility of those avenues to the point that value takes on different values. The machine greases the cogs and sometimes misses the suspension. Who's the thief? Who's next? Whose day is more than another's day? Thief? All is quiet on New Years Day.

He says "everything that didn't involve guitars". You have to keep in mind, after OK Computer, Thom got bored to death with the music they had made up to that point and was waking up to the potential of electronic music. That is why Kid A was such a left turn coming from OK Computer.
