He was/is probably my #1 guitar hero, I picked up a lot of what im trying to play from his Homespun lesson and now i find everything I can thats been preserved..But somehow i missed it that he had passed until around Christmas of '22..R.I.P. one of the alltime greats..fantastic player! Also a very interesting fellow.

I went to high school with this guy. He had a trio with Rusty Rutledge on drums, Tom Mitchel on Bass and himself (Thom Bresh) on guitar. It is impossible to describe how good they were. With three players they produced the most perfect sound I think I ever heard.

I reckon he's a brilliant bloke and a superb picker. Those Travis chords are the way l think because they simplify more complex forms of the same chord. Merle was probably the first great guitar thinker and Thom just follows his path.

What l love about this whole style is the melody and the powerful base combine perfectly. It's probably impossible to improve on it, especially the chord progressions. The debt us pickers owe these guys is beyond calculation. Thanks gentlemen.

Great guy, met him at CAAS in 2018. I just wonder how long it took him to stretch that thumb over. My hands are kind of small and it is a bit of a challenge without getting tired.

I have small hands so the thumb thing is near impossible . So I work around it the best I can. I wonder if they can surgically add an extension to my wittle tumb.

I use my thumb all the time on the 6th string. Then I saw that Merle was getting the 5th string also perfectly and and easily with it! I just realized today that I can do that by keeping my wrist pretty straight and raising my elbow (to the back, like if you were cocking back a coal shovel left handed). He didn't need to do that whatsoever. And it looks a touch funky, but if you want some of those chords might be worth a try.

this first lick that he plays, is it a travis song? or just something he used to play? id really like to either hear a whole version, or see the chords cause its a beautiful few seconds (1:13)

I wish you would explain the type of actual stands or Travis picking you’re using with your right hand or do you do a variety of different Travis Pickett? First can you see ya with the thumb 6464 than 5462 are use your name the strings as numbers

@@tag3434 THANKS A BUNCH ! I've only been able to find Bigsby electric guitars online but not acoustics
@darrendix5163
@darrendix5163 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it didn't start with Fender electrics. The Bigsby head stock was fitted to a Martin D-28 herringbone for Merle Travis, apparently having a good effect with the sustain of the higher notes. Thom has Travis's original Martin, and at least one replica was made for Thom (probably so that it could go on tour without utter paranoia while the herringbone stays at home in the studio).

The decal must be worn in spots on that headstock. I couldn't wrap my head around it saying "Bigsby," but I worked it out with photoshop, and it probably does say Bigsby, if it has been worn down with age.

Wasn't the idea of not using the thumb over that you have more agility in the other fingers. Win some lose some?
