Yeah it was paying homage to the great Cincinnati Cobra Ezzard Charles. Funnily enough Charles' rival Jersey Joe Walcott was also involved in shaping the type of fighter Marvin Hagler would be Hearns would take after the straight punches to the chest to push his opponents off balance and Hagler took after the step through hooks, disrupting tempo and footwork. Crazy how history repeats itself.
@acetofresh12 жыл бұрын
@@Kingkodiakbear Wrong. Walcott was nothing like Hagler. Hagler was based off of Floyd Patterson and Emile Griffith. Hearns also fought nothing like Charles who was a defensive boxer.
@Kingkodiakbear2 жыл бұрын
@@acetofresh1 wrong, Hagler and Walcott we're friends, Hagler was inspired by Walcott and studied his step through hooks and his footwork. Floyd Patterson was the opposite of Hagler, he was a quick and sharp peakaboo fighter with a glass chin, and Emile Griffith was an opportunistic fighter who relied on great defensive spacing. Walcott was an unrelenting fighter who used off tempo footwork, and unique combinations to make up space. Hearns was textbook Charles, when he was being thrown around the circuits he was thought to be a descendant of Charles, he clearly studied the spacing, the straight and "mostly straight" curving punches. Hearns also he admitted that he learned how to stiffly jab the chest to keep his opponents off balance from Ezzard Charles. The defensive style similar to Hearns was similar to Kid Chocolate, who Ezzard Charles studied religiously.

100% true about Hearns' chin being his weak point. And yes, he left it hanging out there to be hit but that was because of his fighting style, not because of his physique. Aaron Pryor had a granite chin, superb stamina, skill level, the whole shebang. But as I said, you can't compare a man of 64kg to a man of 79 kg. Pryor remained at Jnr Welter. Leonard and Hearns were eventually champions at Light Heavy. If you asked me "would a BIG Pryor have beaten Hearns or Leonard?" I'd guess YES.

Leonard ducked Hagler until Hagler slowed. Capitalized on Duran in the 2nd fight where he was being careless with his weight. Loss the 2nd fight to hearns but was declared a draw. Leonard never gave Hagler a rematch. Leonard's legacy is overrated.
@wheelinthesky30010 жыл бұрын
Leonard brilliantly used the ring against Duran in the 2nd fight. I don't remember Duran's weight being a factor. Leonard decisively decisioned Hagler fair and square.
@cagiva9009 жыл бұрын
wheelinthesky300 Duran's weight absolutely was a factor. Leonard admits to that in fact practically brags about how he rushed Duran into the rematch knowing how Roberto loved to live the high life between fights. Leonard vs pre-Mugabe Hagler would have been a completely different story. I had Hagler winning anyway, he landed the best punches.

wheelinthesky300 No leonard admitted in an interview that he rushed the rematch when he saw that Duran was not managing his weight.

@Berkeclor92..You just admitted to everyone that you are an excuse maker. Leonard was a great fighter period! He fought Duran's fight the first time and went 15 rounds with him. He embarrassed him the 2nd time. He stopped Tommy when everyone else was getting KO'd (which you failed to mention). While I loved the the Marvelous one, Ray had fought 1x in 5 years and gave Hagler a great fight..Nothing overrated about his career hater.

Aaron Pryor was a BEAST! That guy was like a machine in perpetual motioned. I got the privilege to watch live, both of his fights with the Great Alexis Arguello, and believe me, I became a fan immediately after those two fights. Very underrated boxer, and fighter. I personally believe that Sugar Ray Leonard, and Tommy Herns, were afraid of him. I believed he BEAT both of them in the amateur ranks. That's why they never gave him a chance to fight them, when they were Pro. He probably would have kicked both of their asses again. Too bad, they World of Boxing, never took better noticed of Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor. R.I.P. CHAMP!
@joeygonzo4 жыл бұрын
Pryor never met Leonard in the amateurs. No way Pryor beats Tommy in the pros. Tommy was a different beast when he turned pro. He was knocking out welters and middleweights at the pro level. Even KO'd light heavyweight champs.

Great fight. I fought at 132 also and just like pryor, I was a perpetual machine, relentless and very strong. I trained with the handlers of Rocky Marciano. Sadly, I had to stop fighting due to a congenital heart condition. Pryor was a head hunter exclusively. So many great fighters did not realize that the way you beat pryor is that you get low, make yourself small. He could not punch down on top of your head, so he would have to roundhouse while punching downward. This is what Marciano used to do and it worked incredibly well. So against pryor I would stay low in the crouch and use my speed and strength to score as he was forced to roundhouse his blows. This may sound hard to believe, but there were fighters in new york city that were just as strong and just as fast as pryor, and they were relentless machines too, but for one reason or another, they could not go on with their boxing careers. And of course, this is the case in all sports. Pryor was a great fighter, and again, the way you beat him is to fight from a crouch, and find out what his training schedule is before a fight and double it.

Duran did, Leonard did, I lived in Cincinnati, Ohio my entire life, worked out at both of Aaron's gyms there, it was big news Duran's offer was never replied to, and the time limit on it ended for $500,000 and Duran moved on up to WW, Leonard offered $500,000 and it was turned down, then he upped it to $750,000 turned down again, so Leonard signed a deal to fight Duran at WW, accept the $750,00 if you think your so great, then beat him, then from that point on you set the price for fights, same with the $500,000 from Duran, but he did not, also Mamby owned the other half of the JWW title through much of Pryor's reign there and made many offers and attempts to unify the title that was ignored and turned down by Pryor's people, yes I'm sure he beats Mamby, but they did not want him fighting anyone that had any shot to beat him, Mamby had no power, but was an excellent boxer. Arguello was 2 weight classes over his best and nearing the end of his career, and a slow robotic fighter who had lost power and speed moving up even to LW, they were not as scared of that, but still, Arguello beats him without the stimulants, watch the straight right hand that bent Pryor's head all the way back and he laughed at him, because he was higher than a Kite on Stimulants, that Punch KO"s anyone, Pryor was downed by 7 bums in his career, that punch at least puts him down. So your at least wrong about no one wanting to fight him, also Ray Mancini was going to fight him but then lost the fight Pryor to making that deal, Pryor I'm sure wins that one, but at least Mancini had Power, speed, and quickness and would have had a shot. but again, no fight. and Pryor's people rushed away from the LW division when he was ranked as high as #3 in a loaded division at that time. to the worst division in boxing to fight an old Cervantes that also put him down in that fight a young Cervantes keeps him down. Imagine Pryor staying at LW, fighting Jim Watt, Hilmer Kenty, Arguello at LW where he was better, Mancini, Howard Davis Jr., even Andy Ganigan, he had a super hard punch, also Edwin Rosario, Gato Gonzalez, Esteban Dejesus, Rockin Robin blake, Jimmy Paul, with his awesome 1 punch KO power, Hector Camacho, Sean O'Grady, soon Julio Cesar Chavez, Jose Luis Ramirez, all and more were all around in Pryor's time, but he never fought a single one of them but Arguello. so yes your right, what fights could have been, just watch the Bobby Young fight, that was a Clean Pryor, exactly what happens to him in his prime with no drugs and stimulants, good whirlwind exciting fighter, that gets Koed by the greater fighters and only beats the lesser ones.

Aaron Pryor was a beast. His nickname was the hawk. He fought in the pros as a light welter weight. All the people in the welter weight division were afraid to fight him.
