Thomas The Tank Adventures toys are some of the most popular toys for young children. But these train toys have changed many times recently. I take a journey from the classic 1984 Paper Faced ERTL to Thomas Collectible Railway and this reveals just how much this small toy train has changed. In a strange way the price has not changed but what you get for your money has. Many will claim the ERTL Thomas was toy perfection, it's weak link was a poorly designed train coupling system. Then Learning Curve re-formatted Thomas die cast toys into a very distorted cute train that used clever magnets that worked both ways. These toys were known as Take Alongs and have proven to be some of the best small Thomas toys due to their robust design and ease of play. The early Take Alongs had lots of metal in their design, but that started to change and the front boiler became plastic. Take Alongs changed to Take And Play. Then Mattel started to make these toys. For a long time not much changed until the shock of a downturn of sales had Mattel re-invent the toys to appeal to the iPad generation. 2012 saw the last of the classic Take N Play Thomas and 2013 saw some major changes to the Take n Play Thomas. Many people started to ask where these changes needed or ever asked for. But the underlying reason for change was profit. The toys were being cheapened down. Thomas lost his drivers cab and a clever magnet system that was rarely ever complained about. A dumb monopole magnet that looked ugly was landed on the small Take And Play toys. Then by 2016 this failed change was replaced with a non magnetic coupling that actually has some really positive aspects. This Thomas toy that's like take And Play is known as Thomas Collectible Railway. The small Thomas toys have always been awesome, sadly the most awesome ones were made many years ago now. Thats why you hear the term classic toys. Many of today's plastic fantastic toys will never become classics.

I don't have every style of Thomas that was made over the years and I left out some all plastic variations. The new Thomas is a step forward after taking two steps backwards in design. I have just looked over a Thomas Adventures playset and it's excellent. The most amazing thing was the very low price of the toy Vs a Take N Play playset.

I will agree it fixed some problems but created others the only versions of these trains I'll be getting is the people ones without hucks maybe this will go further than take n play only time will tell

One interesting thing is ERTL had 20 years in business, and only had two changes: paper face to cast face. Take Along had 8 years, and only had two changes: metal fireboxes to plastic fireboxes. Mattel, so far, has had eight years, and had four changes! 2009 Thomas to 2012 Thomas, 2013 thomas, and then Adventures. I’m not too sure why Mattel made all these changes, but in t definitely has something to do with profit. If they are trying to compete with the free apps, then ERTL design has to come back. Having a crushed cab, dome, whistle, and huge funnel doesn’t work. Mattel needs this revelation

According to the wiki there are supposedly going to be track & magnet adapters for these to connect up to the older stuff so they will still work. Although you would have to get in contact with Fisher-Price directly in order to obtain them.

I miss the trips to the toy store every Tuesday to get a new ertl Thomas. I remember getting some of the theadore tugboat ones too, I remember I would be amazed by how great all the ertl Thomas's looked just more detailed than what's there today. I think one of my favorites was the lady ertl.I'm really lucky to have been a kid in the late 90s, early 2000s, I remember my mom pulling in the driveway with a new ertl and remember getting so excited. Having a 7 year old sister it's crazy to see how different things are with the iPads and toys getting worse than I remember.

my only gripe with the new take along/take and play range is it does feel a lot lighter. I like the old because it feels like it has heft. but this coupling is cosmetically and for function, better

I know the dumping of trains at the end was for dramatic effect, but I seriously wonder how many people will rid themselves of the old to make way for the new. I greatly admire the new system, but the fact there isn't an adapter truck with a magnet on one end is a little disappointing. How else other than blutac will people connect the two variants? I wonder if perhaps the old Take-Along/Take N Plays can be converted to the new system. Another topic for another time I suppose.

My son used blutac to connect Chuggington diecast to Thomas Take N Play. In the end children just make things work. Toy companies seem to struggle with that idea!

True though I did hear they will have track adapters so you will still be able to connect your Adventures sets with Take-n-play. so it isn't a total loss.

I just purchased a Thomas Adventures playset and there were no track adaptors to Take N Play. It feels like a real cut off time, a totally fresh start with much cheaper playsets and toys.

Those early Take Alongs are built like war tanks, they will survive the next nuke war. So heavy in design and feel great in the hand.

Very very interesting; I just picked up a new Thomas adventures 'original' Thomas (green) and the old ones to do a video like this... the biggest change I noticed was a drop in price which was massive that I think is really curious... as is the material from mattel explaining the change...

Finally I beat you to it. I highly suspect Mattel are struggling to sell these toys and now it's time to make stuff really cheap. The glass generation love their free iPad apps, playing with real toys have become second fiddle. Notice how rapid the changes happen from 2012, the iPad Christmas was 2010.

When I did my 2016 Thomas toy study of what was selling I did notice lots of dust collectors on the pegs. But Thomas is not the only toy that's not hot anymore. The whole toy market place has changed and the rise of the blind bag toys with never ending collectables seems to be all the rage. Little toys with huge mark-ups equals big profits for toy companies. Moose Toys were into this toy market well before the big names. And Moose Toys is now one of the top earning companies in Australia.

leokimvideo one thing that does seem to be selling rather well is the new transformers stuff; leading to at first no stock and then a big Glut towards the end of each wave... seems lots of toy companies and retailers are totally all over the place atm

I think the BIG problem apart from the iPad generation is there are just too many brands in the marketplace. I see Bob The Builder is trying again. It's up against Paw Patrol, Octonauts, Rescue Bots, Thomas & Friends, Peppa Pig, Thunderbirds, Star Wars, Minecraft toys, Ninja Turtles, Batman, Spiderman, Hot Wheels, My Little Brony, Disney's latest flick and possibly 10 more franchises trying to take over your mind and wallet. Do we really need all these brands? Many of them are actually very similar. As we learned the toy train market was not big enough to have both Thomas and Chuggington, and maybe thats indicating that little trains are off the boil compared to say 20 years ago. Seeing Chuggers fail is a reminder that even the most awesome toys can be left on the pegs. Success seems to need these 3 components, a well produced TV show, excellent free game apps and toys that relate to the TV show and game play. Hasbro do this very well with Transformers. Yes I see their toys tend not to be dust collectors. Mattel don't understand we don't need multitudes of Toby or Toads (the list of dust collectors is pretty long). If they made Boco, Lady or just interesting rolling stock it may be a real winner. The flash in the pan one off characters is also not working. Loads of The Great Race characters are just not selling. Target dumped the price of the Streamlined Thomas to $5.

I'm actually a fan of the new couplings on the Take n' Play Thomas sets. It reminds me of the Tomy/Trackmaster couplings, and how good they were. Heck, a HO/OO coupling can just about fit into the new Thomas coupling, which will make play quite nice for kids who have that kind of rolling stock.

Seeing the olds ones dumped in the trash made my heart sink. I've been working hard to collect all the old Take Alongs/n Plays for a while now. They're so expensive second hand usually. And they are soon to be compatible with the new Adventures range, it is confirmed that they will sell adapters. But I also saw someone on twitter go out to the hardware store and get a little screw hook and connect the engines that way. While I know a screw hook isn't the best option for children it is an idea for older fans. I'm looking forward to trying it out once I get my new Adventures LSBC Thomas in the mail.

Leo,Did you know there actually exists an ertl Thomas with a paper face and a white running board made in 1984 and is extremely rare I have one it’s in serviceable condition the face is almost coming off and everything is loose but it’s a very beautiful thing to have in the collection so if you can track one down definitely buy one you will not be disappointed

I like the new coupling design but I hate how the cab is all small and squashed up. what I feel Matel should so is add small bits of metal in the bubbley end parts of the couplings or just make them out of metal, or even make adaptors or specialized couplings add-ons to make them compadable. its like going from the Tomy track to the early track master system all over again at least they work with my all time favorite range ertls but some of the play sets related to Thomas adventures is just bad like the space themed ones

It started a few years ago at my local charity shop. They put aside the Thomas toys and one by one I have built up a army of hundreds and hundreds of Thomas The Tanks. Not sure what will happen to them when I die. Dare say they will end up at the local tip.

If you call Mattel you get adaptors for the couplings and the track for FREE. That's really neat in my opinion and I ordered 2 of them. :)

I've done some reading Leo, and all the new Thomas toys go straight to stores/shops over seas in the US and Canada due to a bigger demand in Thomas and friends merchandise. The new adventures have flown off shelves here in the US, I've gone out to try and get my hands on some but still haven't got a single one. Also in US stores a single Thomas and Friends Adventures engine alone goes for roughly $12-$15 USD. Your best bet is to order them from the US and have it shipped to Australia.

Holy hell I remember take along and take & play my brother had a few before mom gave them away. I was born a year after take along but I had more wooden railway models than take along and take & play. I was 1 yrs old when the last few ERTL models were released ( Jack , Alfie , Murdoch , fergus , Arthur and jock before the line completely discontinued) it's sad when a toy line gets discontinued.

I hope Mattel are actually watching your videos Leo and taking notes, because I totally agree.No one said anything about change, no one wanted both take n play and trackmaster to look and perform differently. So Mattel should either go back to the original look or just stop before it gets any worse

The new Take N Plays have awesome playsets called Thomas Adventures. They are actually quite good. The move away from magnetic coupling may be the best move. But the children of today need to buy the toys and be happy with them. If they are not Mattel will need to think the whole thing over again. The toy companies are up against the amazing free apps on iPads. How can you compete against that?

The main reason I don't like the new couplings is cause they only made the change to save money and that's one of the issues with Mattel they consistently redesign there toys to save money instead of making them better and I can't believe that you actually attempted to snap the coupling on the ertl Thomas at 1:51 lol and not to sound like a mom or anything but instead of throwing away all those Take n plays maybe donate them

Mattel are up against free apps on iPads, they are doing everything they can to return good profits to the company. There is no law against making a profit but it's curious to see how they change things to make it happen.

In my Opinion the Current Adventures/Collectible Railway not bad because one the Coupling system is now Compatible withthe ERTL and the Minis Range as ive been exposed to this since 2014 when it first arrive here in the Philiplines it has been a very popular range as it is more Cheap than the Take n Play range before one single engine cost 199.75 Php and a tender engine cost 349.75 pesos vs the TNP Single engine 349.75 and the Tender Engine cost 549.75 to 649.75, As for me u have been Collecting the Take Along and Take n play range since 2003 when it first started and i love how Learning Curve made their Engines more Heavy and more Metal use Vs Mattel using more Plastic and by the time 2014 came well Its more Lighter than before and The Cabs of all the engines sre Squiashed up and it Look kinda ridiculous i was really hoping Mattel would give back the Cabs when it turn to the Adventures range but i was wrong Hopefully the Adventures range would be a Succesful range or we will see this Range be more Cheapen up again by Mattel or be Discontinued all together. Now for my Positives and Negatives Positives -Coupling System more Robust and strong than the Magnets -Engines are more Lighter than before -Some Designs of the engines are Same as their 2014-2016 TNP range -The sets are now feels like a Railway not a Gimmicky fantasy railway Negatives -Engines tend to be more Squashed up in Shape and size (Cabs) -Some engines Faces look Awkward some have Lines in their eyes( Diesel) i think their using the same Process to do the Faces like the MINIS range.

I think that adventures is better than take along and take n play. The couplings look like actual couplings and not a bald man's head. The paint looks loads shinier than the previous. The faces are perfect. Take songs and 2009 take n play look pretty bad whilst this one looks like the show. The only think I don't like us try wheel gauge but other than they it's a 9/10 for me
