Thomas & Friends classic Trackmaster train set Busy Day On Sodor is a curious trip back in time to 2012 when Trackmaster classic ruled. This playset has pieces dating back to 2009 and that's right at the time when Fisher Price took control of the Thomas toys from HiT Toy Company. There was very little difference with the Thomas toys initially but as the years rolled on Fisher Price (Mattel) started to change the formula and DNA of the Thomas Trackmaster toys. Put it this way in only a few years this toy train system was totally transformed into Trackmaster 2 and is nothing like this classic Thomas Trackmaster toy. Busy Day On Sodor features Arthur and Thomas who have their own rolling stock, a track layout that's large and interesting. Farmer McColls farm, Elsbridge Station, two tunnels, two cows, working water tower, stop go and an elevated bridge section. This toy plays out like a real railway and not a rollercoaster. For much of my audience this playset will seem like a lost family member who's suddenly re-appeared out of the toy wilderness of today very different Thomas playsets. Busy Day On Sodor is almost faultless and it ticks so many of the boxes when it comes to playability, Sodor Island feel, size of toy and value for money. It's the sort of toy that basically stands alone without the need for much more. It's the ultimate starter set that could be easily added to with more classic Trackmaster trains and playsets. I feel it's a very important trip back in time considering where the Thomas empire has been headed lately. Sadly the Trackmaster 2 Thomas toys are not fully compatible with classic Trackmaster. I recently purchased the utterly stunning TOMY Takara Streamlining Thomas with Annie and Clarabel in dream sequence blue as seen in the Thomas film The Great Race. This is one of the most amazing Thomas toys I have ever purchased. It features a build quality and finish you do not see on the Mattel Thomas Trackmaster toys! This toy is awesome in so many ways maybe the best feature is the two speed switch. To really ramp up the action I take the very fast Streamlining Thomas for a ride on the Trackmaster 2 playset Thomas Tank Trackmaster Scrapyard Escape Journey Beyond Sodor Playset. Sadly I can not promote the e-Bay seller who sold me the TOMY Takara Thomas toy. It was not properly packaged and the toy boxing was damaged in the post. This toy needed to be in a protective box in the same way Amazon would do. Brown paper and small cell bubble wrap does not work.

Amazing how much changed in such little time with Thomas Trackmaster toys. A reminder of how good it used to be, back when Thomas played like a railway delivering special specials around Sodor.

Right at the tail end of the Fisher-Price TrackMaster era, I remember seeing many of the Diesel and Cranky sets as well as the Percy set, I think I picked up the pair for about $50. I missed out on the Busy Day On Sodor when new, but managed to find a complete example along with a few other sets - Arthur at the Copper Mine and something with Percy in it - at a garage sale. That saying about not knowing what you have until it's gone has now rung true for both classic Trackmaster and Take-Along, it seems, I certainly know I was paying more attention to ERTL during the early 2000s heydey of Take-Along and TOMY during the HiT and early Mattel era of classic TrackMaster.

It took me some time to really enjoy Trackmaster Vs TOMY blue track. I missed the HiT Toy company era because I had the Ultimate Thomas TOMY Playset. But now a little history has passed we can now look at classic Trackmaster as something special. Sure some may argue it's simple but I'm fine with simple. Curiously Mattle share price started to collapse in 2014, it never recovered and continues to fall today in 2017. Maybe a back to basics approach is needed to lift the toy company profits. Or maybe the iPad and free apps now rule. It's a really curious time for anyone trying to sell toys against endless free apps and games.

I honestly wish stores still had the original Trackmaster, stores other than thrift stores, being able to find them at Walmart and Toys R Us. Speaking of, 2014 was actually a pretty good time for Thomas Trackmaster in my opinion, you could actually find both Old and New in the same stores for a little period of time.

Hey leo, i saw your comment on the petition about the Thomas Wood 2018. I would say Mattel will ruin millions of childhoods (and already did) in the near future. Having other track connector, leaving spots on engines to remind them that "its made of wood", and making the trains look like knock-offs, this is too much. Even for me, i watch everyday Thomas Wooden Railway Videos, and i dont have anything Thomas, but seeing these toys just makes me sad. Mattel is choosing profit over quality and childhoods. I signed the petition to remind Mattel the classic ol'days where the sets were FULL of detail, track and destination. Take the example, the 1997 100 piece set, it was packed to the brim with track, trees, signs, destinations and even 2 sheds. Now what do you get? A few pieces of track, a big bulky destination and a stock standard Thomas. When Roy Wilson was in charge of the TWR, it was gold. When Mattel bought the franchise, in 2012, people really knowed that Mattel would screw up the toys, only for money. They only care about Barbie. My advice to a kid which just considers starting with the TWR line, i say ask your parents to buy old sets from Ebay or Amazon, whatever, and dont even blink an eye at Mattel. SHAME ON YOU, MATTEL! Do not worry, Leo, when Amazon Oz has come, you can buy some of the old sets, and i will end here otherwise i'l end up ranting.

Look at Mattel's share price, just Google 'Mattel Share Price'. This company is in some serious trouble and is struggling to sell toys like they used to. The downfall really kicked in in 2014 and continues to today. This is a complex subject but it does feel like there are major knee jerk changes to Thomas toys that should be left well alone. Most people want a train set like Busy Day On Sodor, and thats why this classic Thomas set needs a review. I feel it's a timely reminder for everyone. The digital addiction of today's children is really affecting how toys are needed, toys that cost real money can't compete against totally free games and apps. With the advent of e-Bay and Amazon many people search out the older classic toys Vs the rubbish that's so often served up today. The TOMY toy is this video is a real eye opener. I say buy the Thomas toys from Japan. They are as good as your ever going to get. Mattel need to tread very carefully and stop dumbing down toys that never needed changing.

It might be the perfect time to set up my TOMY Ultimate Thomas Playset. The sort of toy that has you wanting no more apart from more engines and rolling stock. I purchased mine in 2006 and it was on special for $150. The full retail price back then in Oz was around $250. This was the last TOMY set I saw before the Hit Toy Co Thomas Trackmaster (classic) started to appear. There seemed to be lots of small sets to start with and I remember them not selling that well. It took a few years for the goodness of the new system to be appreciated. Now we fully understand that classic Trackmaster is awesome. And all this change over the last 10 years. It's difficult to comprehend why these changes happen.

I never had Trackmaster, but I did have a small amount of TOMY. Diesel was fun, James broke, but the king of the railway was the Steam Along Thomas. Sadly, I don't know where they are, but this video reminds me of an ever so sweet time.

To be honest when Trackmaster was out I was too busy mourning the loss of TOMY to fully appreciate it. However I do remember liking to improved trackside accessories and range of rolling stock. The sets look so different compared to the nonsense they produce today. I really need to get my trains out again!

Last month, me and my family went to Osaka, we were shopping around the train station in the city when I found a Tomy store, inside, was a 1992 model Tomy Thomas with Annie and Clarabel (It even had a white running plate.) for sale, I had one when I was really young, so seeing that Tomy make a model Thomas from 1992 to this day really made me feel so happy, I thought they discontinued them, so me and my brother bought it. I'm 13 now, and I have been watching your videos since I was 8, and the reason why I don't buy trackmaster now, is that there was a huge dip in quality since 2014. I once had a trackmaster Henry with a snowplough, included was a flatbed with logs. That was my favourite trackmaster engine, and I would play with it for a long time, one of the reasons why was because it looked so much like the Henry in the show. The new Henry is all blocky, so are all the other engines, all the rolling stock are small and look like cheap plastic. So I'd wish to buy Plarail trains as they are still of a very high quality, but I live in Hong Kong, and Plarail trains are often very rare and very costly

Brilliant! So nice to see the old Thomas stuff looked at. Also Elsbridge Station looks nothing like Elsbridge station. It looks more like Drayaw. I think the TOMY streamlining Thomas is amazing! When the on/off switch has 3 directions it is called a 2-speed switch. I like the fact that Annie and Clarabell have the old TOMY faces. It is nice for the fact that the "busy day on sodor" set has two engines. The thing that "Busy Day On Sodor" reminds me of is the TOMY THOMAS ULTIMATE SET. You should drag it out one day and take a look at it again. I would like to see it.

Trackmanster/hit toy company came around in 2006, tomy was just starting to go away, hence the adapters we’d get in the early sets. I miss those days where you could still buy old tomy but still buy the new kind and join both together. Good ole days

2020 was the end of an era Bonus; 1992 - 2011 were the classic years of Thomas Plarail Why? 1992 - 2011 were the years where classic characters were still sold They were still sold in 2012, but were no longer in production that time, most of the stock ran out in 2013 or 2014 since Plarail rebooted the engines again in 2012 Oh, and yes, this is from 2024

What I remember when I was young, in Malaysia, I remember having the blue track tomy set with cranky, Thomas and a boat (I forgot the name) and I got it at like 2010? Now Malaysia doesn't have any Thomas toys now

This set just shows that all the Thomas toys up to 2014 were great all the other Trackmasters set's you showed that were in box most of them had a custom feature or had a character that wasn't Thomas Now I'm not saying that today's Thomas toys are bad adventures is a step up from the dumb magnet

The first set of the classic Trackmaster was the Action Canyon Set from 2008. Witch later around the same time as the Busy Day On Sodor Set was reconfigured to What I think is called The Icy Escape Set or something like that.

I think there were about 3 general versions of Thomas available during Fisher-Price's "Classic TrackMaster" era. The first one, (which I'm labeling as the 2009 version), was the version that looked very much like the TOMY and HiT Toy era of Thomas. This version is seen on the box art of the Busy Day on Sodor set you just looked at. It has the classic style Thomas face with the eyes and teeth painted in (in addition to introducing triangular-shaped eyebrows). The second version (Let's call it the 2010 version) was introduced in the Misty Island Rescue-themed sets (Zip, Zoom, & Logging adventure and the Shake Shake Bridge set). It looks to have the longest shape length-wise and has tab on the back of it. This is the first edition TrackMaster Thomas with a CGI-style face. The third version is known as the 2012 Trackmaster Thomas. It's the same one you took a look at in this video. Its face seems "chubbier" than the 2010 version, and has painted details on its sides as opposed to the usual sticker decals. The motor (again, as you pointed out) is positioned in the middle of the chassis. I'd really love to see you do a comparison video of all the different versions of the motorized Thomas from TOMY to redesigned Trackmaster (or at least all the versions Fisher-Price has done). It'd be so interesting to see all the little details that came and went throughout the years. I know that the one you looked at said 2009 at the bottom, but I think that in the case of date-labeling, Fisher-Price might have done the same thing Learning Curve did with Wooden Railway (by not labeling the dates on the wheels of the trains after 2003) If you don't do one a comparison video, I completely understand, but I just thought I'd straighten out some of the differences between the different versions.

WOW! This engine is incredible; I've seen photos online but it's just amazing; the paint job is great and the functionally is a nice bonus! I wonder how much they retail for over in Japan... they might be the only place that pays more for toys than we do (but they get much nicer toys I think)... Very very nice

Could you revisit the super fast thomas i think i found a easyer way to make it faster without having wires semi-exposed just change the motor in the train ones that look like they could fit is mini 4wd motors and they say thay can go to 27000 rpm

Trackmaster Classic still sells in poland (online), but you cant get HiT toy company trackmaster anymore. You can still get Tomy Blue track and possibly Tomy engines online. Weird.

I swear in England Tomy did Trackmaster then Fisherprice, I remember having a "Thomas and the coal mine" which was re-released as "Author and the coal mine" later on and a set that I dont remember the name of but it had Thomas, a bridge and a station... And I swear it was Trackmaster done by Tomy it even came with peices of track that would let you connect it to the Tomy sets.

coolcrawford He looked at that set in Thomas Collection 16, it was made by hit toys, not tomy. It was made in the transition era from tomy to trackmaster, that's why.

It came with a special truck that when it ran over a special peice of track it would flip and it would be full of coal

No it was trackmaster track but it had the Tomy copyright logo on it and the box and stuff like that and it came with some of those track peices that switch from Trackmaster to Tomy I got it when Trackmaster was just starting to maybe it was for a really really short time that Tomy did it.

Does the Shake Shake Bridge Thomas classify as a between-era Thomas? It's my favorite-looking of the three, between HiT Toys and the almost too-big Mattel one... and, in my opinion, it sports the best CGI face... Streamlined aside Also, your son is once again the most hilarious thing in your review. :p

The tipping troublesome truck is from a set which came with Duck and with a crane and bridge set. Also if you look deeper at thomas' motor, it's a 2012.

I used to have that grey troublesome truck,you know your channel was like the 1st stuff I watched around the beginning of cgi and old track master and The old taken play.I kept track master things until I started to loose interest Thomas so I gave it to a little kid who was my neighbor in my old neighborhood.I knew he would enjoy it but I still miss it.Thomas has sure took a turn now with big world adventure.Oh well Nice video and keep up the good work.I also love your Mad Bomber videos

It's sad that our technology took over so many toy companies, there are a lot of great toys and great customization between play sets and you can even play around with things that don't match, like two different pieces track and possibly make it work

I have the "Shake Shake Bridge" but I got a different set, I got some deluxe set for Christmas one year that had the bridge, the zip line thing, Thomas, Bash, and Dash. No "Misty Island" track.

The biggest thing that turned me off TrackMaster was the deterioration of the scenery in the transition into TrackMaster 2. It slowly became some Thomas characters with some generic track that could just as well be in any other toy train set.

Main reason why tomy still existed in East and South East Asia is because during 2006 tomy lost the license to sell thomas toys in Western markers by hit toys, but because they are the dominent toy train company in Asia, they still were pdrmited to sell in its local region, which is why in Asia, tomy is more dominent and easy to find while trackmaster is pretty scarce
