Good stuff mate. With CaptureOne I also add sharpness to suitable taste. I use levels too but then I just like you I use curves (but use luminance rather rgb) so as to allow me use combo of curves and levels. For color I dabble with color balance more than white balance if I want a specific look. As you mentioned clarity and NR is key.

Thanks for sharing your process TB - I had never seen the saturation/vibrance method you use to establish your white balance, very cool (excuse the pun). I don't shoot too much astro anymore but liked making the whites quite bright by using 'select colour' and increasing exposure or by isolating just the bright parts of the image and doing the same. There's so many different ways to achieve the same thing in Photoshop :)

I've never used Lightroom, Capture One, or Luminar. I'm on Linux (Pop!_OS specifically, which is a variant of Ubuntu), so I use open-source/free software that runs naively on Linux like Dark Table (Lightroom lite basically) or RawTherapee (raw converter/photo processor). These applications pale in comparison to the ones mentioned above, but as a hobbyist, it gets the job I need done well enough. IF I were to ever go pro (I still need more work!) I'd probably get a Windows machine since Apple is just so expensive. But I'm not their yet, so I don't have to worry about that. I'm just commenting now 3 days ahead of this videos release cuz I can't wait for the next video to drop :P

@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Haha glad, I could give you a scare! That sure gave me a good laugh! I'm gonna be shooting tomorrow at a random town I've never been to on my own time. There's a nice little main street area and some lovely old buildings, nothing super interesting architecture wise, but still hoping to document how I see things. I tried a week ago, but something was lacking, my head just wasn't in it that day. I just want to ask if you have any quick advice on what mindset to try to have and/or what might be some good settings on the xt4 to roll with. Last time I shot some buildings, was mid sunny day, all in auto mode and it came out fine, except a few times the clouds/sky would come out all whited out, wasn't sure if I needed to change the white balance or ISO to get the sky to appear on camera, but I'm learning Fuji man and it's fun :)

Ohhhh hard to answer without asking a ton more questions. I'd go wide and use a ND filter to get a long exposure if you have one. I always shoot a little darker and lift the shadows in editing. Rather than try to darken the bright clouds

@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Ah yes, I don't have any filters in my setup just yet, I'll need to get on that, but thanks for the advice mate, much appreciated. Whether I get the right shot or not, usually as long as I'm out doing something, I'm still having a good time regardless. But some classic shots sure don't hurt to have :D

Great video Tom I found that quite helpful. Have you considered doing a video on reducing the effect of light pollution using C1 in post?

@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Also I shot a pano mid October and when I stitched it the LP really plays havoc with the image as obviously it emanates from where there’s lighting and not always apparent when shooting. I was wondering what you would do in the field to counter this, drop ISO, shutter speed, light pollution filters etc maybe a video on the effects of LP whilst shooting and then minimising in post? Thanks Tom this channel is building up mate you’re doing a great job.

I personally just try to avoid LP when shooting as I live in a pretty dark park of the world luckily.

Have you tried DxO PureRaw3 as part of the Lightroom workflow? I would be interested to see what you think, perhaps in an updated video as Lightroom has had major advances in the past few years.

PureRaw3 does a great job, atleas for me. Especially because Lightroom has certain difficulties with the Fuji-Raws.

What would you suggest for time lapse and stacking regarding exposure and intervals
@ThomasBusbyPhotography
@ThomasBusbyPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
I’d suggest checking out my advance guide to Astro video, depending on lens and direction etc, and intervals always as short as possible.

Thomas this is great. Couple of quick questions. Firstly was the image you are working with shot on the rokinon12mm? Secondly, I notice that the sharpness sliders you did not touch/cover in the video. It was just about your noise reduction sliders. The Threshold is set up to 10. I am curious how this effects your shots? I know that typically I pull the threshold slider down to sharpen (in all cases astro or not) and in this case you may be going for a softer/milky look by having that mostly to the right. Anyways just curious, thanks for the amazing content as usual.

Yes that image was shot on the 12mm f/2. And are you asking about in lightroom or capture one?

I am very sorry I did cover sharpening briefly in C1 but looks like I left it out of the final video for some reason. Essential what I am trying to do by have the threshold at 10 is not sharpen any noise. For normal landscape Photography when there are more textures I want to enhance I will have the threshold lower. But for Astro my preference is to only sharpen the larger stars as clarity can real add pop to the smaller stars without effecting the noise as much....as long as it's used subtly.

@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Hey no problem and thanks for the reply. Awesome!! that makes a lot of sense now. I am not super fluid in capture 1 but have been using it this year since buying my first Fuji camera. Keep up the great work!

Great stuff, I'm just getting into this and have been messing around trying to get some astro photos. Instead of pumping up exposure and then decreasing shadows and increasing highlights I've been just bumping up the shadows. Not really clear on the total different effect but net outcomes seems to be similar? Just playing around I seem to be getting similar results although I seem to like my blacks a bit more black in the photos I have at least.

And playing with those bright or darker images I think is really important. And the final edited results is such a personal taste that i struggle to think of "the best settings" for editing.

@@ThomasBusbyPhotography Playing around with it pumping up the exposure first and then playing with the shadows and highlights gives a lot more control and will be what I'm doing moving forward. Love the white balance trick as well with notching up the saturation.

Are you not using a RAW file converter for Lightroom? I read somewhere, that converting with the Irident X Transformer, which leaves you with DNG's, gives you an overall sharper RAW file. Curious what you think about that and if you've been using it already.
@ThomasBusbyPhotography
@ThomasBusbyPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
I tested it and for astro felt like I got much worse results, i am not sure why it was so bad as I hear others get great results, but with a astro focus I found the files much worse after converting through x-transformer

My experience with iridient-x on high iso images was terrible, worms everywhere, tried loads of different settings but just couldn't get a good result. Direct RAF into LR dropping "details" to 0 was much better and far less hassle.
