Up for a history lesson? but of the fun kind? In today’s video I’ll be covering the history of male long hair and how things have changed over the years to bring us to where we are at now.
If you’re just joining me for the first time, welcome to my channel where we cover all things long hair for guys and I also have a thriving Facebook group with over 2000 guys currently supporting each other through the awkward stages of growing their hair out.
If this sounds like something you’d love to be a part of, we encourage you to read more about this group and join by clicking the button below. It’s free, and we guarantee you’ll be inspired.
Join the Facebook group here: manbunsandmanes.com/
Long hair for men has gone in and out of style over the centuries and it’s clear that politics and the mainstream views of society have played a massive role in dictating and whether or not it’s acceptable at different times. But who the f#ck cares… Well that’s what we think anyway.
We’re not going to be covering every little detail and period of time where long hair was a thing, but we will be covering periods where long hair was very prominent and what was happening at those times, starting with CaveMen.
Cavemen are the epitome of how simple life is supposed to be for a human. No grooming, no education, no politics. Just eat, sleep, SHlT, groan & repeat. Doesn’t that sound great?
No, but really. The lifestyle they had was literally just about survival and if we look at the stereotypical appearance of caveman we always see him with long hair and a beard. Why do think that is?
Our best guess is that that’s exactly how he was supposed to be. That’s right, if you take away everything society has built including:
- The corporate environment
- The economy
- Social pressures to fit in
- Clothes
- Supermarkets
- Buildings
- Electricity
- Beauty products
All you’re left with is a man exactly the way he was designed. Please don’t get us wrong, this post isn’t supposed to be a flat out bash on society. There are TONS of AMAZING things that have come from human civilisation.
The main point of this section is just to look at the concept of men’s long hair objectively and highlight that long hair on a guy is actually more normal than wearing a t-shirt is.
We also find it super ironic that something like this is so easily forgotten and over the years in multiple different cultures, men have been made feel ashamed of being exactly the way they were designed, which we just can’t get our head around and is the main reason this blog even exists haha.
Anyway, now that we’re clear on the fact that from the beginning of humankind that long hair on men was supposed to be a thing, let’s have a look at where else we saw this as civilisation developed a bit more…
If you’re keen to get more insight into the History of Men’s Long hair, make sure you watch the entire video as there’s some pretty interesting things in there.
Thanks so much for coming to watch my video and I hope you have an excellent week!
Yours in good hair,
Thomas.

From what I know the Vikings did take very good care of their hair and beards. Made combs and even bleached their hair, so not all of them remained blond after childhood much like today. They were some of the cleanest people for their time washed once a week on Saturday which translated as Washingday. Learning about this connection to the past was something that encouraged me on my beard journey this is how i am supposed to look. But I just recently after years of loving to wear short hair Im finally growing it out and going for the full Viking look.

Native Americans aka Indigenous people of North America??? Most of them had long hair. It wasn't so much a fashion statement, so maybe that's why you forgot it. Why do people forget about them? The beard brand guy forget them too.

This video mostly focused on Europeans. In Mexico many men even wore their long hair with bangs (fringes) in the front to avoid it getting into their eyes while working or in battle. Since we bathed often our hair was well kept and clean no matter the social class. I grew my hair to reconnect with my roots as well as going for a new look :)

This was pre-colonialosm. The same way as the US and Canada long hair and other customs labeled as "Savage" were outlawed or strongly discouraged. To this day you will have an extremely hard time finding a job or a school of your hair isn't at military length

Social conditioning is dangerous, social media is cool. One of the main inspirations for growing it out is the indigenous people of America. Most of the men were hunters or warriors with long locks. I even read somewhere that some Native American tribe believed their hair was an extension of their body. The longer the hair, the better the tracker. They put it to they test and surprisingly it was true.

You should've expanded to the historical long hair care in places where most men, even poor peasants, are rocking one, the Vikings, (pre-Qing) Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Persians, and basically every tribal societies outside Africa all have them.

the beard thing is not always true, men in many native american and east asian cultures can't grow one on average for example, they're not built like that, also a minority of women CAN grow a beard, some don't have that much body hair, while others don't have any single patch of skin without It, so the natural look of people it's very different from one individual to another
