Who’s ready to look at some common Male Long Hair Stereotypes? Not that we really give a crap about labels around here but it is extremely interesting how it’s a human instinct to try and categorise everything it encounters.
Just a side note before we get started as well, this video was not made to offend, it’s just an observation on what I’ve seen and noticed just from being in the Men’s Long Hair Community.
I’m sure there are plenty of male long hair stereotypes out there that I’ve missed and of course I’d love for you to add your additions in the comments section.
Just for an overview of what you can expect in the video, here are the common stereotypes for guys with long hair that I’ve seen and a few characters in the media I think match this the best.
#1: The Hipster
Typical Characteristics of this stereotype:
- Hangs out in cafes a lot and loves coffee
- Sometimes wears big frame glasses that make you wonder “Are those even prescription?”
- Wears tight fitted jeans with some floral open button up shirt and if not that it’s something completely out there that NO ONE else thought of...
- Loves a ciggy coz it looks cool.
- Drinks green smoothies so when people call him out for smoking he can say “Life’s All about Balance” Duh
- Can be found in Byron Bay.
Where do we see the Hipster Stereotype in Mainstream Media?
- Hank Ge
- Giaro Girratana
#2: The Trendy Gay Guy
Typical Characteristics of this stereotype:
- Usually super high energy with a bit of sass.
- The life of the party everyone just loves him.
- Super stylish when it comes to his clothing.
- Well groomed from the hair to the skin to the shoes.
- Does his own thing even if most people won’t approve.
Where do we see this stereotype in mainstream media?
- Jonathan Van Ness (From Queer Eye)
- Jay Bermingham (from Instagram)
#3 The Gender Bender
- Love make-up and outrageous looks
- BEAUTIFUL Hair
- Loves taking everything to the absolute extreme
- Hates the idea of labels and wants to let the world know about it.
Where do we see this stereotype in mainstream media?
- Jeffree Star (From Myspace)
- Lithunium (from Instagram)
- Elio (from Instagram)
#4: The Pretty Guy Who Ins’t Gay
Typical Characteristics of this stereotype:
- Gorgeous hair
- Cares about his appearance like A LOT maybe a little too much
- Takes a lot of photos
- Looks manly but still pretty somehow.
Where do we see the Pretty Straight Guy Stereotype in Mainstream Media?
- The OG Fabio (From the I can’t believe it’s not butter commercial)
- Greg Berzinsky (from Beardbrand)
#5: The Beach Bum
Typical Characteristics of The MetalHead stereotype:
Loves Surfing
Hair is usually un kept and really blonde from sun bleaching
Never has a shirt on.
Has tanned skin.
Usually has a hot as hell girlfriend.
Wears board shorts ALL the time.
Bit of a daredevil
Where do we see this stereotype in mainstream media?
Mark Ochillupo (World Champion Surfer)
Jay Alverez (from Instagram)
#6: The Metal Head
Long unkempt look hair
Dreadlocks are also common.
Obviously loves metal music and bands
Can sometimes be confused as Gothic by others who are ignorant.
Has tattoos and Piercings
Wears rugged outfits
Loves a good head bang/hair whip
Where do we see this stereotype in mainstream media?
Pretty much and Metal Band
If you look in the audience in any metal band concerts, you’ll also see their fans haha.
#7 The Vegan
Can be very opinionated
Very Passionate about animal welfare
Likes to be as natural as possible
Had a crazy awakening and saw the meat industry for what it really is.
Goes to length of protesting.
Where do we see this stereotype in mainstream media?

#8 The Rugged Bikey Guy
Scruffy hair & beard
Ripped as hell
Hndsome as hell
Has a few pictures on IG with his motorcycle looking amazing.
Clearly doesn’t give a dam
Love eating and making you wonder where the heck do you put all of that?

The reason metal heads are calmer than most people despite our music taste is we have an outlet to deal with our emotions and anger. It keeps us above water and calm. I probably fit the metal head musician guy as I do play an instrument and listen to world music and doom metal a lot.

You're right about stereotype. Last week during my martial arts class where the students are supposed to have a crew cut or bald head, I'm currently 12 months in hair growth. To my aghast surprise, my peers started teasing me about 'whats up with the long hair? Are you a vagabond? Have you become a sage? When are gonna cut your hair short?'....etc etc...I simply responded with a straight 'why the sudden fascination with my long hair that you guys are so worried about?' to shut them up once and for all. That did the trick..!! In a land of warriors and kings and sages of ancient times who were revered and pursued for their long manes for their masculinity, it's really saddening to see that the modern Indian society looks down on long hair nowadays. But I simply have overcame those people's comments coz at the end of the day I'm putting in the hard work. So, why should I care for others opinions? Thanks for the support group, Thomas.

6:46 i have learnt to see metal music as relaxing when i was in a 6 hour flight (the first time i have flown) and, well, I didn't have any other music downloaded than some metallica and other stuff. I was awake the whole way, and listened to about 40 in a loop. Since then i see metal music as relaxing, but when i can, i do like to, you know, go loud and wild. Same situation for the loud and wild viking music i listen alot to these days.

Earthling Ed is great. He is one of the best advocates for the animals. He is calm, rational, logical and compassionate. He was the tip of the ice berg for me to become vegan. I feel great about aligning my values with my actions, and I feel emotionally better. The food I eat is delicious. I eat better than before. You just need to explore that new world, which is very easy in today's society with all the options and Internet for information. Remember, if you feel bad about what he says it's because what he says is true and you know it. It's hard to face and acknowledge reality sometimes, but it's the first step to improving. :D

I was raised in a " hippie" family in San Francisco during the 60s & 70s. That was the world I grew up in. I " conformed" and wore the Corporate/American uniform most of my life as an adult( hated it.) But I learned how to play the game. I started my own businesses, got my pilots license, own my own plane( a Cessna 172, not a jet,). Now that I'm in the winter of my life, I've come full circle. I've returned to my roots, as it were. I don't care what this society says...least of all women, I live and let live and I'm happy for the first time in decades.

I feel like the stereotype I fit is the metal head/rocker look as I don't always dress like the guys in metal bands but do listen to them often. However other people see me as the guy they think is gay but actually isn't 😂 that just comes from working with a few stereotypically masculine dudes and being a guy that dresses well and styles his hair.

Hey man love your videos. I think you have great potential for using minoxidil. I saw some of your previous vids on it and saw that there are some things you aren't doing correctly like how you apply it. I think this will be it for now. I really wasn't comfortable with the whole overgrown look. I much prefer something with a bit of bush but still tidy haha

Acgh! Happens too much. I actually don't mind. When we were all masked, I got called "miss" almost daily. Only once did someone (a literal crackhead) , super nasty screamed at me about looking "like a woman!". I laughed in her face 😄

I think i am a mix of a lot of them, like: The hipster, The pretty guy who isn't gay, the beach bum without some of the characteristics haha the metal head and a little the rugged bikey guy I might be totally off track, but i feel like i can relate to some of the characteristics of these stereotypes in my humble opinion

I dont know if I should be happy or sad that I dont fit into any of theese. I'll just create my own: Long haired guy, decided 2 years ago to try the long haired thing. Is a musician, but not heavy metal or rock, more something closer to jazz. Hate cafés and love bars. Drinks black coffee and eats pizza without pineapple. Has anxiety to the point that people wonder how he can handle to stand out like that.

I definitely don't think you are dumb or wrong. I stopped eating vegan for several years and then I read How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Gregor and it motivated me to started eating more healthfully. Which really improved my rate of hair growth as well. =p I also recover faster from workouts. I still have pizza sometimes, so don't take it as all or nothing.

The first two stereotypes are *really* ridiculous, because as a gay man with long hair myself I've found that 1. there are actually very, very few of us and 2. so many gay men *hate* long hair on other gay men!! (The latter really makes me mad...) This is why I like your channel, Thomas ;)
