Also discussion on powders caps etc towards the end for all shooters but maybe newer ones.

I have one from 1973, a great gun! If I do my part it'll ring steel targets like those torso targets at 200 yards with a patched round ball. That barrel wedge sticks why out. By the way left to right barrel wedges were something of a Hawken brother's trademark, TC didn't care, but I've always inserted the wedge on my TC Hawken left to right.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the brass wedge is long what's nice though is it's not moving looks like someone replaced with an aftermarket tc , it feels good and the barrel lockups is rock solid. Fun gun fpr sure just getting back around to dialing it in.

You don't see the .45 Hawken that much, most were .50 and .54. I've got one that started like as a .50 and the previous owner added a .40 Green Mountain barrel to. I didn't like the receiver sight so I found an aftermarket buckhorn rear and blade front.

Thanks appreciate the comment , yeah the 45 seems less common and the 32 and 36 even more so. I have seen rice barrels is now making barrels from 32-54 for tc dropins

Had a friend with one like that we used to shoot….early 70’s. I’ve got a 45 Lyman. 45 is the best! I use pyrodex P. OMG! Listening to your discussion on powder brands is like listening to the wine connoisseurs discussing vintages….. and I’m the guy drinking “rose’” that comes in a cardboard box. Fox out

Nothing wrong with boxed wine. Now you can get some quality wine in the cardboard plus you could punch wads out of the box lol

@@redeagletrapping Your too kind friend. But you get my drift. These days any powder and any caps is something to boast about. That “oily” feel you mention in your powder is dextrose. Once upon a time I got interested in making my own powder. And I read extensively. You’d be amazed in what they can and did and still do put into and do to powder. Beyond simply futzing with the quality and proportions of N-C-S. Dextrose is added as a glaze to stabilise the powder once granulated. Certain military applications require this. And as you point out sport shooters are the tail, rather than the dog. We simply get the left-overs and floor-sweepings from military contract production. I can’t speak definitively from personal experience but my reading suggests that vertical stringing as you appear to experience can result from such stabilisers. They subtly effect the ignition characteristics from shot to shot, so if your steady in your shooting you won’t see random dispersion of a shot group, but slightly vertical. Remember. The government uses black powder as an initiator in most cases, not as a primary propellent. So they gladly trade a bit of consistency for long shelf life. We just get to be happy for what we get. Worse each brand and maker you test today will change a bit with the next lot designed to meet the next contract. And they won’t tell you that fact. As you know, the little piggy on the hind tit can’t be too choosy. He’s just happy to get any. That’s just how it is. Keep your powder dry! Fox out

Can't beat Olde Enysford or Swiss. Consistent and clean burning in my 50 TC Hawken. About 9 or 10 years ago I bought someone's stash of Goex 2 and 3. Got it at ridiculously low price (about 30 pounds at 5.00 a pound). One of those things you just do. I have been using it on a regular basis (since the shut downs). Good enough in a pinch, but I do prefer OE and Swiss. Big problem now is getting caps, both 10s and 11s. Thanks for the tips as well. Love that hat. Appreciate the video.

That's a great score on the goex. I definitely prefer the oe. Swiss is fantastic but I saw little difference to OE I still have prob 12 pounds of so but that seems like none when you can't replace it. I luckily bought lots of caps just as the pandemic was hit ting so I have prob close to 1500 or so left , again feels like not enough with what I shoot. Thanks for the comment

Very nice TC I have the same one it's very accurate. I shoot with 80 grains of powder and a 240gr. Maxi-Ball . Paid 80.00 for it in 1990 with a pound of powder a bunch of the Maxis ,caper, short starter, case, and a cleaning kit . I also have SHENANDOAH in 50 cal. I picked up at a gun show this year unfired for 150.00 shoots great.

Thats a good idea using a camera tripod for a shooting rest. You can't beat the adjustability and portability of a camera tripod. I just bought a camera tripod at a goodwill store for $5. I already have a couple but i hope to attach a chrono to one of those. I plan to attach the rear bag from my two piece bench bag set to the tripod with peel and stick Velcro. Right now I am shooting air rifles in the back yard a good bit I hope to do some testing of various pellets and round balls through several rifles and air pistols. It's too hot to do much shooting outdoors. I can shoot my Air pistols indoors In the air conditioning. Idaho Lewis has some good videos On shooting TCs with lead 45/70 bullets at long range. Very interesting. When the weather cools off maybe I can shoot my black powder guns. I have a book about flintlock rifles. It has photos of 260 different rifles. I counted and over half of those rifles were 45 caliber. The rest were about evenly divided between 36s and 50s with a few above and below . What that tells me is that the old timers thought that the 45 caliber was effective and efficient for thier needs. Thanks for the video.
