You know, I never really understood how alliteration and parallelism in old Norse poetry could give people that satisfaction that you get from rhyming until I heard Heilung perform it. Now when I hear it it's v spicy

I appreciate we'll never know but it doesn’t seem wildly implausible on first glance that Odin getting "half" is actually a reference to Thor getting the other half and that part of the reason Thor seems to be widely loved in real life and yet Odin gets more prominence in the poems is because the upper class half go to Valholl and the lower class half go to Thor.

I suspect that given their love of the spoken word there was no fixed map of Norse mythology. There is a large part of me that wants Hel to be the same place as the village next to Trondheim airport that's now called Hell.
@casthedemon

Well according to the sources we have it would seem Norse mythology's realms are all on the same plane. They're not separated (as artists like to depict and even though it looks cool, isn't something they conceptualized.) None of the descriptions in the poetic or prose edda suggest the realms being on different planets, planes, or even branches of the world tree. And often the world tree is depicted much more centrally in art than it is in the myths. It's really described more as just a huge tree. But not at the center of creation.

Love your work-If you take KZfaq requests, I would love to see an analysis of Haustlong. It’s probably one of my favorite skalds due to how shrouded it is. First there is the unusual trio of Odinn, Hœnir, and Loki; and then there are Idunn and Thjazi who’s names seems really old and mysterious and whose etymologies I can’t find conclusively on the internet. Even the name, this seems to be like a possible mythologization of the concept of winter-which is neat because to my mind we don’t have much mythology explaining natural phenomena. I would love to hear your thoughts on this poem

Stella (his assistant/media manager/not really sure her exact job title) manages the comment section. Jackson has mentioned several times before that he does not read the comments (probably the best policy for KZfaqrs). Best way to contact him is to use the email on his website.

I like the idea of it being 5x120+40 (640) doors instead of 540, 640 just seems like a better “square” number, though I suppose that 540 is a good “round” number.

A fun read has a map in it that without it the story, as rough as it is to read at 1st time (took the author 9.5 years to deconstruct English to what it might be like 3,000 years after a nuclear war w no books) much harder to understand. Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban. After the 1st chapter when the headache goes away its pretty easy. I didnt put it down until I finished it. Off point, I know, but it is a map vs book related book and I cant pass up a chance to share this book. Thank you for all your work. Super pay coming.

@9:12 Wait, when was the vinland map made? Not arguing. I actually do not care where heims are, just thought the Norse were a traveling people who would have maps of everything, maybe, the map I am referring to is a forgery. Imposing a way of life we are familiar with on others we discover is not unheard of.... I always wonder what if way in the future archaic homes are unearthed, and toilets are found, but not understood until one is found unbroken in the form of a chair! It would surely be part of our religious worship, and the old earthlings were a very religious people with toilets in nearly every home.
@Terraoblivion
@Terraoblivion Жыл бұрын
It's a forgery and even the creators claimed it was late medieval, not actually from the viking age. Nobody had remotely decent maps in the first millennium CE. Good maps of anything are largely an innovation of the early modern period, though they did improve over the course of the middle ages.
