he is a gundabad orc. he is much more skilled and intelligent than regular cannon fodder orcs. he spoke multiple languages, had great tactical skill as a commander and also anticipated Thorin's moves well, like that he would try to rescue Kili. he also regularly stood up to Sauron, that not even the nazgul dared to. so yeah he was quite a badass compared to other races as well.

If they had just committed to Azog drowning instead of cheaply coming back alive, this would've been the coolest most fitting death for a powerful unstoppable force. So let's get this straight. It takes multiple high impact hits with a roughly 150-200lb stone mace to begin chipping the ice enough that it starts to break. Yet, an orc being overcome with hypothermia and floating horizontally, somehow has enough kinetic energy instantly built up in a non-existent swim to not only break the ice, but shatter it and launch three feet into the air. What if, 2:27-4:49 is actually all a hallucination from his sickness, and what if Thorin actually died from battle injuries sustained earlier, Azog could have easily drowned, but in Thorin’s mind, he was still fighting azog, Thorin holding back Azog with his sword is symbolism for Thorin fighting and wanting to live, but when he lets Azog stab him, he has finally overcome the sickness and accepted his fate Notice how no one notices that Azog is dead, maybe because his body is nowhere to be found, or ..... still in the water

Ashley Bradley Only cuz it was in the script, in real life he would get pwned by Azog. Size (for extra reach) and strength are of utmost importance in fights, and the orc has like three times as much of both. Why he uses rock on a chain instead of say a spiked chain is anyone's guess though.

one cool thing about this movie is that the entire thing is mostly CGI in some form. so everything on the screen is painted straight from Peter Jackson's imagination. All the colours, countours etc. I think the only movie in history where that has happened, perhaps simply bcos everything that followed it was not even a fraction as artistic but nonetheless true i think. Also impressive how ahead of its time all his stuff is. Havent seen better motion capture than this film. For example Azog's close ups at the end, the detailing of his skin, the noise of his head thudding on the ice. consistent CGI throughout. really amazing.

My ballpark estimate of that stone's weight is around 325 kg (0.5m side x 2.6 granite density). What Azog does with this weight is of course pretty amazing although somewhat expected considering his height, weight and overall physique. I'm more impressed with the casual lift and toss of the stone by Thorin, who as a dwarf should be around 1.25m and 50kg even if built like Shwarzenegger in his prime and scaled down proportionally. We are in the realm of insect-like strength here.
