I wish more pool commentary was like this. Talking about thought process and the reason why instead of just updates on the game.Thank you. I've never tried straight pool being new in the cue sports but after this i'm definitely going to give it a try very soon.

I have to say it; unlike some announcers who would say, this is what I would do, or this is how I would hit it, or this is how I would approach it, David gives the players perspective on how to shoot! He doesn't get off on multiple tangents about how when he was playing so-and-so, or this is how I shot when I was playing so-and-so. Plus he has a calming voice!

Absolutely great video and commentary, one question though. Do most present day games start with a break from behind the headstring with 15 balls in the rack? If not, who decides where the break ball and cue ball are positioned to begin the game? Thanks.

8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball and 14.1 (a.k.a. straight pool) all starts from behind the headstring. It's only straight pool that's a bit special, in that it never goes back to be played from behind the headstring again, except after a scratch or rerack. If no scratches are made, however, the cue ball is continuosly played from wherever it is. Every time there is only one object ball left on the table, the other 14 balls are racked in the triangle, leaving the empty one ball space at the top. Hence the name of the game. In this video Thorsten Hohmann seems to be playing some kind of highest break challenge alone, which seems to be starting with 14 balls racked and cue ball and object ball in hand. Straight pool is an amazing game, that differs from the other pool games in that it forces the player to creatively design his/her own way of going about clearing the table. Position play is way more demanding and precise also. Great practice and can, as is shown in this video, be practiced alone. Can't say enough good things about this fantastic game. Used to be the absolutely most popular pool game, but times have changed. The world nowadays is... Well, that's another story! ;)

@@burnradio9681 I agree it's a great game, just getting started with it but it's making my cue ball control better already. My buddy and I are using an app to track our runs, we haven't made it past 20 a turn yet but definitely getting better. I asked the question I did because, as Thorsten started with ball in hand my buddy had said sometimes they start straight pool that way today in the interest of time to avoid all the safeties played during the initial break. Of course, if you are practicing alone, playing a safety against yourself isn't nearly as fun as playing it on someone else haha.

@@inultus1 Oh, really? I didn't know they started like that sometimes nowadays. Guess it makes sense, since everything today has to be quicker and quicker. The safety aspect of 14.1 really contributes to the game's beauty and character. But that's a matter of taste, I suppose. Anyway, to start in that way would be pretty darn unfair at the professional level, since whoever gets that opportunity might very well run the whole distance of the match. That beginning safety part of 14.1 is when the sharks are circling the water looking for prey, you know. Then when there is a chance, someone WILL get bit. Handing that position over to one of the players right from the start might work among players with less likelihood of running high, but among the pros it would be kinda weird, I'd say.

I like this Video. The only thing that questions me is: The so called triangle layout of the last 3 balls... Mean that if they are not perfectly lined up it´s ALWAYS a triangle formation!! I never payed attention to that and I understand a bit of the game, I´ve had runs over 100 myself a few times. The majority are good patterns and self confidence in what you are doing on the baize.

I think there is absolutely nothing to the triangle diagram he draw, just noodling around in paint or something. I mean I guess you can use only forward and draw, starting on a strait in shot, to pocket/setup 3 balls and it form a triangle, but thats niether here nor there.
