Those Fast SRV Circular Licks

Texas Blues Alley

11 жыл бұрын

You know what these are, you've heard them played in songs like Texas Flood. These are the fast repeating licks in Box 1 that sound like Stevie's playing in a circle. Usually he played them so fast that it's very hard to pick apart the individual segments. So that's what I'm teaching you in this lesson.

sorry - thank you for the high Quality lessons you give here since quit a long time. My Age is 67 but still play the blues and have learned a lot from you. Good concerts were given by SRV here in Switzerland about 30 years ago. But, by the way - an outstanding performance was the one with another American Roy Buchanan. That was unfortunately only at a small place at Zurich - so not many People could explore the greatness of Roy.

@@RickyPisano Did for a bit, played mostly with 12 I think, and lately he reverted to more normal gauges because it injured his hand with the amount of playing while touring.

Seriously, I coughed up a piece of Shredded Wheat when you said "No, my name isn't Stevie." Wry humor at its best. Hall of Famers: "Hi Stevie, what pickups do you use & why are they so high? Why do you play upside down? What pedals do you use? How do you get that tone? Is that really your playing? Your pick is upside down. The SRV doesn't have a white pick guard so maybe you bought the wrong guitar. Grand prize: "Do have your own guitar style or do you just play SRV?" You have our sympathies.

My action is set high because with heavy strings low action makes it hard to bend. When you bend, there is a combination of downward force (towards the fretboard) and upward force (across the fretboard). I set my action such that when I bend I am using 90% upward force, and very little downward force. When the action is too low, you have to press down harder to keep the string from slipping under your finger because you can get less of your fingertip to intersect with the string.

Basically same style lick as what Dimebag (Pantera) does in Walk. A lot of guitar music is very repetitive. Play with attitude whatever you do and get a convincing tone for the style and it goes a long way.

On "Blues at Sunrise" with Albert King, Stevie plays a lick on the I chord that starts abut 5 and 1/2 minutes in with SRV playing in box 1 in F# hitting the 6th fret of the E string and 5the fret of the B string together then continue in box 1. Do you happen to have a lesson on this type of lick? It is just too tasty not to learn

Question for anyone here. As we're dealing with sliding position shifts, humidity or dew point gives me sticky finger syndrome that make smooth slides frustrating. Primarily using a Strat w/ a Rosewood fretboard. When things get sticky on my Warmoth maple neck with laq, I use Fast Fret and if it's really humid, baby powder; just wanted to know how others handle this, and if I'd be harming my Rosewood fretboard with these antics. Much obliged, guitar Brothers & Sistas. How do u handle stickiness?

Great lesson. I have trouble with the slides so I substituted a double pull off. When your going fast you really can't tell the difference and it sounds fast. That's the point right? When I slow down I drop in the slide like you do when you are clearly annunciating a lick. Thanks Anthony!

A great lesson, but it looks like and I have found it is a lot more efficient to use your pinky finger than trying to land your middle finger. Maybe Stevie did it that way. I don't know, but It is faster if you can use your pinky in logical situations.

Thank you for your lessons ! Question: have seen others comment on your high action, but was wondering if you have a definitive reason for it ? Very curious about that because all 5 of my guitars are cheap and get fret buzz with low action. You show me good playing is possible with the high action, what gives ?

I am used to using my pinky finger when doing licks like this...are you leaving out the pinky finger on purpose? Is it something that helps with SRV style?
@Texasbluesalley
@Texasbluesalley 10 жыл бұрын
Lenley Melvin I've never used my pinky much, because it's not as strong for bending, and in general I just didn't need it. However, there are two exceptions where I always use my pinky: 1 - When the frets are far enough apart that a note is uncomfortable to play with my ring finger. 2 - When my ring finger is required for a note immediately after the note that could be played with either finger.
