I have experienced hyperfixation throughout my life, it was nice to hear someone else experiencing it. Some of my fixations become part of my “rotation” and some don’t, but at this point I find myself visiting previous fixations instead of going into as many wholly new ones. Bread making, crocheting, puzzles, tarot decks, gardening , reading and video gaming are all ones that tend to be something that is part of my life pretty consistently even if I take a break for a month or two here and there. I loved learning about dog breeds too actually and love watching the dog show around thanksgiving every year. Right now, amigurumi, bread baking and video gaming are most heavily practiced!

Interesting to hear yours rotate. I guess some of mine do too. Like thrifting. I always thrift but sometimes I get more obsessed with it and other times it’s just from necessity.

I can definitely relate to this video. I used to be super obsessed with homesteading and canning. I do love crochet and it could fall into the hyperfocus category but I think with there’s just so much to learn and like you said, you can totally switch it up. So I don’t think I’ll get bored with it but I guess there’s never any guarantees lol! But tbh, doing YT has helped me be more mindful about how and what I crochet so it helps me pace myself! Great topic!

That’s awesome that KZfaq helps you be more focused. I kind of feel that way too. It’s giving me more of a purpose with the stuff I make that isn’t for my shop.

I too have hyper fixated on various things over my lifetime. All the needle arts at one time or another. I spent a year learning Italian. And two years teaching myself algebra, among other subjects. Interestingly have also found myself cycling through my “fixations.” After not being able to do any needle work for a few years, I’ve recently picked crochet back up. I can unequivocally say I’ve fallen in love again! 🧶🧶🧶🦋

This seems to be quite common in the comments. People cycling through fixations. Glad you’re back in love with crochet and glad you’re here ❤️

Crochet is my escape when I am feeling overwhelmed or upset or need to decompress. It balances me out, reorients my thinking and helps my body relax. I am so grateful to have this tool at this point in my life and thrilled to have some pretty creations to show off for it. When crochet no longers helps my well-being I won't give myself a hard time if I drop it. 🧶❤️😊

That’s such a healthy mindset! I used to really beat myself up for quitting things in my life but it really is good to think of it as something that serves you or no longer serves you.

Baking, cake decorating, cookie decorating, plants, knitting, crochet...I am definitely a hyper-fixator. I love learning everything that I can, but unfortunately I have to have everything that goes along with each hobby and that has cost me A LOT of money over the years. This is what I truly regret and I wish that I could better control this side of my hyper-fixations. If anyone needs baking pans, cake molds, cookie cutters, or houseplant supplies...I'm your girl. I also have difficulty getting rid of things because I might need them one day. Sigh.... I think that I will always be either knitting or crocheting, at least. I need my hands to be busy while I sit. I am loving amigurumi right now. So fun!

I totally hear you! I regret money that I have spent as well. It takes a lot of self control to help curb that side of it. It’s hard! I also have a hard time getting rid of stuff. I have an entire desk that is full of craft supplies I rarely use but keep just in case but my daughters have been raiding it lately so I’m glad it is going to use!

@@Tfwcrochet We hyper-fixators need to hold conventions where we can bring our unused obsession supplies to trade with others!

I never knew there was a name for what I do. I can get fixated on something for a long time and then I don’t want to do it anymore. But I tend to have a revolving door, I go back to it. Sometimes it’s a few years but I go around and around. I don’t know if this is the same thing you’re talking about or not. I’m always sewing. Some years it’s quilts, some times it’s cross stitch and embroidery, or crocheting and this year I added Amigurumi.

I didn’t know there was a name for it either until a couple years ago! Another person in the comment mentioned things rotating. That does makes sense!

Crochet is my latest hyper fixation! Got into it in October, but I’m trying to paste myself, so I don’t get immediate burnout

I’ve had severe untreated adhd for 40 years. I just found out because I brought my daughter to the doctor for symptoms I had as a kid and and she has innattentive adhd and I have combined type. I turned drug addict from 11-30. Got clean and Hyperfixated on plants for 9 years (I had 500 houseplants at one point lol) still have hundreds but I don’t buy them anymore because I realized I’m crafty! Had no clue and now I’m fucked cuz I can’t stop buying craft shit and trying all the things. My figure candles holy shit I’d sleep 3hrs wake up so excited make candles all day not want to sleep cuz im so into the art. Started an Etsy store. Diamond art nope, cross stitch, resin art, beading crap, painting, clay…Now I’m into crochet HELP ME. lol my doc started me on meds but they aren’t doing anything yet so we will see what happens lol kinda scared cuz I’ve been going so fast in my brain my whole life I don’t know how I’ll act if I’m in slow motion or whatever happens lol

I totally understand the fear of slowing down. Sometimes I think my anxiety is what is keeping things going in my house and being treated for it will make everything go to hell. 🫣 I have been on meds in the past though and it was very helpful. I wish you all the luck on your journey ❤️
