When I was just twelve years old. I was on holiday at a caravan site at West Hythe on the Kent coast. Being a nice day I decided to go for a swim. However I got caught in one of the notorious channel storms and as the tide was going out I was swept out to sea. I found myself about 5miles out and struggling to swim back to shore as I was still caught in the outgoing tide, so every time I stopped for a rest, I was taken back out again by the tide. I realised that trying to swim on the surface was getting me nowhere fast. Then a little voice whispered to me to swim like a dolphin, so with no better solution and no sign of rescue, I had to try it. Surprisingly enough it worked. After an hour or two I could see the sea wall slowly coming closer. This seemed to give me renewed strength, so I continued with this dolphin swimming until I thought I was close enough to touch bottom. Big mistake. I managed to grab a lungful of air just before I sank from sight, holding that precious lungful of air and fighting off the need to breathe until my feet touched bottom and I pushed up with my feet breathing out the air as I ascended towards the surface and finally breaking through. That first lungful of air was the most wonderful I've ever taken and I was just so happy to be alive. I finally made it back to the top of the sea wall, where I collapsed from exhaustion where the police and my parents and all the people from the caravan site had been searching for me.. I found out later that they had even got a helicopter out searching the channel for me. I really feel that I cheated death that day.

You were absolutely incredible!! i remember a few times, where i needed to be calm and get myself out of trouble, maybe even out of death's grasp in my early 20's, and i know a couple of times when i was your age. Nothing compared to you though. a calmness comes over you, you think very clearly whether for yourself or you need to help someone else. i raise my glass to you |--C.`.` what a brave and intelligent lad! When I was growing up in the upper north of the USA, my dad was superintendent of the nearby national park, which I am not going to name. One winter he got a report that someone had gone missing while hiking with his girlfriend. The girlfriend was okay, but both she and the missing guy were tourists (who for some reason came in the middle of winter) and barely spoke any English. My dad has experience in coast guard, so he knew how these situations went down, especially in winter and he thought that it was a waste of resources to send out rangers and that they could just go find the body in the morning. Also the couple went hiking at 10 at night and weren’t on designated trails. Reluctantly, the chief ranger (who was a close friend of my dad far before this) got together the few rangers we had and they went looking for 8 hours. I was about 13 so I was asleep the whole time and heard about it in the morning. The rangers eventually packed up and went in, sadly having to let the guy wait out the night if he was still alive. They went out searching the next morning and found the dude, miraculously alive! It was miraculous because the idiot was wearing gym shorts, tennis shoes, and a thin sweatshirt. The snow was 6’ deep and the temperature got down to -20 at night and only 5 Fahrenheit during the day. They warmed the guy up in a little tourist shop and sent him and his girlfriend on their way, neither one knowing a word of English. That’s all I had to lend to the topic. The moral of the story is to know what you’re getting into when you do something, so the son of the guy rescuing you doesn’t share your mishap on a KZfaq comment that nobody is going to read. Shit.

If an animal is ahead - Hold the wheel steady. Brake, then brake some more, and keep braking. Then, only once you've shaven your speed, you can start considering safe course adjustment (assuming that you haven't already created some new roadkill). Swerving at cruising speed to dodge something is a tried and true method to turn your car into a tumble drier and/or crushed can, with you and your passengers being the contents.

Pumping the brakes is also how you stop wheels locking up and avoiding a collision. Any traffic behind you should be far enough behind to react to whatever happens in front of them. The avoided collision could be a snow drift, animal, human, bicycle, landslide, sinkhole, etc. The car in front will see it first and, hopefully, not hit it

razeezar - If you come driving at 55 miles (90 km) per hour, and there is a small animal in the middle of the road, then do nothing but keep the speed to stay on the road. Concentrate on the steering Panic braking can have catastrophic consequences, both for yourself and others. I love animals, but do not risk the lives of my passengers, or my own if I am alone for that matter. do not risk the lives of humans because of an animal that has strayed into the road.

You left out a critical detail in Harrison’s story. In desperation for finding another pocket of air and/or food. He started to go to the other rooms of the ship when he heard sharks beginning to enter the ship, he had to go back and in that time he listened how they came into every room, luckily they didn’t found him. There’s a video of the rescue as well. It’s crazy.

I rescued this girl when I was in Colorado for several months while testing my survival skills. She was lost for a few days and had no idea where she was or which direction to go. Fortunately I knew where I was and had a compass on me and was strong enough to basically carry her to my SUV and drive her to the hospital. I think the whole time she thought I was a serial killer because she looked at me with so much fear until she saw the ER sign at the hospital. Everyone should always carry a survival kit if they're going somewhere with no cell reception.

@@steveclem7873 similar experiences (I've always been a very adventurous and hyperactive kid) Instance 1: I was on the monkey bars at school. I climbed to the very top and tried to hang upside down on them. Mistakes were made and I ended up falling ten feet down to the gravel below. I was taken the nurse and they monitored me for a concussion because I had fallen on my head. Nothing happened, I was good. Instance 2: I was at my city park with my brother and I loved to climb the football posts and sit on the top. (How I'm not dead, I'm unsure.) When I was climbing down, I reached the bottom and tripped over god-knows-what and ended up going teeth first into the post. It hurt like no other, but ultimately there was nothing wrong other than I was frightened. Instance 3: Here is where the hyper-activeness comes. When I was a kid, I used to get overly excited at the smallest of things. In this example, my favorite teacher had told me that my eyes were really pretty. This triggered my excitement and I ended up running around before hitting the top of my head against a cement wall. I didn't cry, I barely felt that it hurt. I was in and out of the nurse all day being monitored for a concussion, which I miraculously didn't get. The worst part of that day was being the last one to lunch because of the nurse wanting to check on me. Conclusion: Where is my brain damage?

About 12 years ago, I found my mother passed out on the floor of her bedroom and called an ambulance. She hadn't been feeling or looking like herself for a couple of weeks prior. As it turned out, she had developed diabetes without knowing. Her blood sugar level had reached 1401! I'll never forget that number. She ended up in a coma for 3 days, but came out of it with no long lasting effects, no limb loss or brain damage and her eyesight returned fully. Doctors said they had never seen anyone with blood sugar levels anywhere near that. They said people have died in as low as the 500's. She's been normal ever since and has even managed without insulin for all these years, just being careful of her diet. It's crazy to even think of now

If you make sure you maintain your fluid levels you can extend the amount of blood loss you can sustain. I mean, you still don't want to lose a lot of blood, but it's worth keeping in mind. Basically if you can keep the amount of fluid in your bloodstream up, your blood cells can still do their job fairly well even if they're short-staffed. It's why gradual blood loss is less likely to cause serious damage than sudden blood loss, even if both cases involve similar red blood cell levels.

A mate of mine got drunk around the camp fire with a bunch of us one night, deep in the mountains in Australia. In his drunken state, he saw what he thought was a blue tongue lizard, and tried to pick it up to show everyone. Turns out it was a death adder, which proceeded to bite him almost a dozen times. None of us was aware of this as he had walked away from the fire for a bit. He came back and didn't tell anyone what had happened, and fell asleep. Funny thing about death adders is they got their name because not that long ago there was no anti venom for their bite. If you got bitten, you were almost certain to die. Here's where my mate started to get lucky. One, was because an anti venom had been developed by this time. Two, was because one of my mates is a sharp bastard and realized something was wrong very quickly. Three, was that a bunch of Army medics was training in the same mountains and had a helicopter, AND the anti venom. That dude should be dead. By rights, we should all have woken up hung over, with him dead next to the fire.

Another person you’d be in sock to be alive is myself. On September 7th, 2011 I was hit by a car when crossing the street on my scooter. When it struck me my head flew into the windshield shockingly breaking both my skull and the windshield. When the car stopped I was launched 10ft chipping my tail bone on impact. I was then laying in the middle of the street bleeding out (my brain had been damaged) and would have died that day too if it hadn’t been for a fire fighter EMT getting gas at a next door gas station. The EMT called in a chopper to pick my unconscious body and to bring me to St. Louis Children Hospital. Doctors told my parents I wasn’t likely to live. But I proved the doctors wrong. After being in a coma for 2 weeks I had to relearn many things such as, using a door knob, brushing my teeth, and how to speak. 2 months went by and I finally was given permission to go home. During the period I was hospitalized, I was the most home sick I had ever been and could not wait to see my family and friends. My name is Bryan Boly and this is my survival story. This is a true story with evidence to prove it.

Fun fact about the second story- since piracy was pretty common in the area at the time, the crew were instructed to lock the doors to their cabins, this ended up being fatal as they struggled to open the doors to escape the ship. Since Harrison was on the toilet, he didn't have that issue and his toilet break probably ended up saving his life.

I fell 250 feet once. I strongly, strongly recommend that everyone avoid doing that at all costs! They say that it's not the fall that hurts, only the sudden stop at the bottom. I beg to differ. From the moment that once solid-looking piece of ground that used to be under your feet vanishes into thin air, everything hurts, and if you're lucky/unlucky enough to survive it keeps hurting...forever. Also, "Run the damn thing over!" rather than drive off a cliff is good advice.

4:34 THIS My first driver ed. teacher always taught us this: We have a pact with the squirrels (or any other animal). If one runs across your path and you can avoid it, then try your best and avoid it and let it live another day. But when push comes to shove and there's no easy way to avoid it, just run it over. It sucks, but its way better than driving off a cliff. Even bigger animals that will fuck up your car. Its better to hit a deer than drive off a cliff. It walked in front of you, after all. I know most if not all other animals don't have critical thinking skills like we do, but I feel like "if i run in front of a speeding, loud, unnatural, and shiny object I'll get hurt" isn't a whole lot to ask of them.

The point is never give up. So many folks give up just in their day to day situations. It’s hard to dig deep and overcome what is seemingly insurmountable. But we have a choice. To give up or persevere. I beg anyone feeling desperate or hopeless to not pull the plug on their own life. Rather see how far you can sink into depravity only to rise out of our depths like a phoenix. We are innately wired to survive. Do not go gentle into that good night. We are all worth the struggle. I laughed more than I should, you're not only fabulous with your information, but somewhere in all this you can keep a straight poker face that would make experts baffled. All this time of watching your documentaries I just noticed I haven't subscribed :) Doing that now

I've had a collapsed lung and I can tell you with 100% certainty that she didn't scream , you can barely whisper and if it's more than a few hours old your chest starts to collapse as well and even breathing beyond shallow little pants is extremely difficult .

Aztecs used to say: "Death is made of the sweetest and whitest sugar". I wouldn't insulted her just like that, because at least once we all are going to need her.

In rural Australia, one of the most important things we are taught as kids is do not swerve when there is a kangaroo in the road, hit it. It is one thousand times worse to swerve than hit it.

I've never cheated death, but I certainly have come close to doing so. One time when I was 10 or 11 I was at a water park, in the wave pool. It was particularly busy that day but I didn't care. I went out into the deep end. That was a huge mistake, as I was stuck underneath all of the inflatable rings with people on them. Just as I was running out of air, a stranger brought me up and let me hold onto their floaty as I caught my breath. I thanked them, and when I could I dived back down and swam back, hauling myself to my feet and wobbling to my mom's side, crying as I had just gotten out of my shock.

I sat on the edge of that bridge 2:11 a few years back for a photo. While I was sat there, a man appeared to be waiting directly behind me on the other side of the road. Thinking that he might be wanting to take a snap too, I moved away from the spot to let him. As I did, he ran full pelt across the road, jumped up onto the wall and dived off. screaming obscenities, I ran to the wall and looked over. Just in time to watch his base rig open. "THANKS FOR THE HEART ATTACK!"
