Every summer we head a little further north to seek out one of northern Ontario's best kept secrets. A vast area of thousands of acres of wild blueberries. This years wild blueberry harvest was small in comparison to other years, but we still managed to pick several kilograms of these tasty wild northern Ontario blueberries.

We have our honey patches in old cut overs here in manitouwadge. You have to spend some time to find a decent patch but when you do its forever...lol Ours is a 20 minute drive from the town to blueberry heaven. If picking all day..take lots of water in a cooler and snacks and a small stool to sit and take a break.Wear long sleeve shirt and a cap if sunny and comfortable shoes. We take our quad 4x4 and never have to walk far.

I grew up picking huckleberries. To clean them when we got home we would hold a wool blanket at less than a 45 degree angle then pour the berries down the blanket. The twigs and leaves would stick to the blanket and the berries would be clean. We also had a hand made Huckleberry rake. One half a small coffee can cut in half the long way with a wooden board cut to fit with tongs (fingers) cut into the board to strip the berries from the plants. Wire a handle to it and you are ready to go. I see anyone can buy a model but they can be made at home. Good jam.

That is another neat way of cleaning debris from the berries. No little hairs, etc would end up mixed in with the berries? Wool always seems to have loose strands of fibre falling off. We’ve toyed with using various berry pickers/rakes, but the damage we’ve seen done by using them in some areas has kept us from using them.

@@Wilderstead This was an army wool blanket from a lot of years ago. I don't remember any issues and the picker didn't damage the berries.

Save your used tea bags and freeze them. It will add more tannins (the pucker power) to your wine. I no longer make wine anymore but that is a frugal tip given me years ago.

Yeah man, big part of why we chose this area to settle into. Wild food EVERYWHERE! And, this is a really bad year for blueberries. It took us 8 hours to harvest those 20 litres of blueberries. In a normal year, it would be closer to 100 litres in the same amount of time. Cheers! Hope all is well over your way.

Where and why are you leaving to go back up north? I'm in Washington state and the idea of going up to a colder climate is daunting. Is that area pretty dry as well as cold?

We definitely will. Although it’ll be a mixed berry wine due to the low harvest this year. But - the wine recipe we use is universal with all the various berries that we pick. Cheers!

Likely the same area. And this year is really low production. 2 of us picked 20 litres in 8 hours. Normally that would be closer to 100 litres in that same amount of time.

@@Wilderstead that's too bad, we had some family that said save the trip, but we always go up a few times camping and only went up once this year. Save those dirty berries for the dog, she loves to the frozen treat... Great vid, thanks.
