I’m extremely happy this is happening. Our two nations can benefit so much in the future. Hopefully the benefits won’t always be related to the military but rather in infrastructure investment and economic benefits but I believe this is a great accomplishment nonetheless. I’m a National Guard soldier in USA with a Filipina wife so strengthened relations of our nations benefits our relationship. But if China does take Taiwan, the Philippines would be cut off from the military support from US bases in Japan and South Korea. And a lot of equipment in their military comes from Japan and South Korea itself so the American presence in actually not so much provocative as China claims but rather is security insurance for the Philippines. And China claims it’s being encircled but I think expanding military footprints through foreign relations and finding mutual benefits for both countries is more civilized than ramming naval ships into fisherman and small coast guard boats in order to flex its power. I seriously pray that the Middle East destruction and the tragedy in Ukraine wakes China up to realize war has no winners and forget annexing Taiwan… like they got Hong Kong pretty much under their control, why force a destructive world war for an island that doesn’t want to be part of their nation. I mean I’d love for the Philippines to return to the USA as actual states instead of a colonial territory (Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao) but obviously that won’t happen because the people don’t want it.. so the next best thing is to build the tightest national relations in order to maintain some kind of diplomatic influence in such a region. And China doesn’t even recognize Taiwan despite decades of independent sovereignty. Instead it would have made sense to win them into their camp through mutual economic benefits. Idk I think China should just focus on developing it’s international reputation and influence on the world island instead of trying to gain influence and territory in areas that the USA has long invested in alliances after winning world war 2. Anyway, may God bless the Philippines and God bless America.

Spent several months in Subic Bay back in 1956 and again in 1963. Always found Olongapo a fun city. Perfect for a 17 year old young man to experience booze and lovely young women. Every time I see the ads for older men to come to the Philippines I wonder what my life would have been like if I had stayed with my Filipina girl friend back in the 1960's. Just an old man in his 80's and his memories.

Some comments were unpleasant toward the US military at that time, from the teaching staffers. I'd really like to know what they think about PBBM allowing the return of the US military and the actions of China these days. (Be careful what you wish for! You just might get it!)
