Thrash it! Episode 5 - Class 68 Compilation

The Class 68s in the fleet of Direct Rail Services are seen on freight workings, charter trains and hired out to Scotrail, Chiltern Railways and TransPennine Express for passenger service.

If I ever get to do a railfanning trip in the UK, these units are near the top of my list to find and film. Here in Southern California, we get to enjoy the 68s bigger cousins, the EMD F125s. Those CAT prime movers sound so nice.

a very shapely British diesel locomotive. Very aesthetic. One of the most beautiful English diesel locomotives.

Correct, not good for Britisch Economy, but I am German ;-) But like British trains, e.g. The Mallard steam locomotive

When I first heard a Class 68 I was looking up at the sky because it sounded so much like a radial engined warbird!

Nice locos the 68s the cab front reminds me of a 1980s transformer lol they might be robots in disguise ready to invade us lol 😆

Why do they sound diesel and electric at the same time??? They have a electric traction Like a electric train?

Yes, the vast majority of diesel locomotives are diesel-electric locomotives. A diesel engine turns a generator, which powers electric motors to make the wheels move. What you’re hearing is the electric motors and/or inverters. Not sure if these locomotives have AC or DC traction motors. Essentially, the generator and electric motors act as a transmission, like you would have on your car. There are a good amount of straight up diesels out there though. Most of them are diesel-hydraulics. The average diesel hydraulic uses a torque converter as its transmission, exactly like what you’d see on a car.

I don't suppose any 68s have made it onto the Great Western mainline yet by any chance ???. If so would be a great excuse for me to add one to my n gauge layout....

1) If anyone were to ask me why I like diesels from the U.K., this video would be one that I’d potentially show as an answer. 2) That whistle at what I’m guessing is Crewe based on another comment, sounded awfully American for being in the U.K., and not just because it was a chime whistle. Any idea what type of chime whistle it was? I’m guessing 3 chime but any details about what company or individual made it?

The 68s was built in spain by vosslor around 2013 to 2017 around 34 loco's was built plus the class 88s which are very simular but are electro diesel.

So if I'm not mistaken, these units are cousins to the EMD F125 locos we have here in Southern California.

They have the same prime mover (Caterpillar C175), but apart from that, I'm not 100% sure if they are that similar.

That is at Crewe. The 387s were brand new at the time and was using the West Coast Main Line for mileage accumulation / fault free running.

Depends what operator you mean. My fav liverys are: TransPennine Express, Avanti West Coast, german "alex" and the swiss federal railways.
