Beware the Gales of… May? I have never seen a laker rolling in the waves through the Duluth Canal! Absolutely one of the best and most dramatic arrivals I’ve ever seen. The 740ft long Algoma Niagara making a grand entrance in 10ft waves that were barely contained inside the canal piers. Sailing like this is incredibly challenging, although the wind had started to die off, allowing for a (more or less?) safe and absolutely spectacular passage! Something might have broken on her in the waves because she required tug escort to pull into her dock, something that lakers don’t typically require. For a better camera angle of the waves themselves here’s this video taken about a half hour before this one! • Crazy Waves and Darede...
Believe it or not the waves you see here in this video are far calmer than those seen several hours earlier! There were waves breaking far over the shore and over the piers, even over the raised platforms that the lighthouses stand on! It would not have been safe to stand within 10 feet of the canal!
Built in 2017, Algoma Niagara arrived with salt for Superior’s Hallet 8 dock. They sat out on the lake the whole day in raging wind and waves. They must have gotten tired of it because as soon as the winds died down they sailed in, despite the waves still rolling around the 10ft mark. One of the flagships of the Algoma fleet, the vessel is one of the newest, largest and most versatile Canadian lake ships, capable of carrying 34,000 tons of cargo, which helped keep her steady in the waves.
Very impressive and well done captain and crew!

The "Algoma Niagara" is showing the spectators what a "laker" is built to do! Haul cargo in any weather! She is so graceful as she rides the waves through the Duluth Canal, and passes under the Aerial Bridge. That spectacular sky doesn't give a hint of the roiling lake below it.

Not the captain driving to begin with. He's going down sea, the current pushing him. The only challenge ever is before he enters the jetties, where current might come from either side of the ship. Being in broad daylight makes it a walk in the park. Try it at night with tropical storm conditions or 30 knot winds coming from your Port or starboard side with a strong current against you. You'll be sweating bullets cuz you're coming sideways until you get in the jetties... Keep your eyes on the range lights.

Huh? What's the big deal? It's not pitching or rolling AT ALL. There was clearly no danger at all or the captain wouldn't have even thought about coming in. There's absolutely no problems steering a ship that long with such momentum in a channel where the water is going straight ahead like that. In fact, it is creating a current which is HELPING straight steerage.
@jonathanellsworth21
@jonathanellsworth21 Ай бұрын
It is pitching and rolling lol. Plus watch the video I linked in the description it has a better angle on the waves which shows exactly how big they are (my fault, editing fail)
@thedolphin5428
@thedolphin5428 Ай бұрын
@@jonathanellsworth21 Mate, use your eyes and brain. Any ship longer than the wavelength below it cannot pitch. DUH. Each of those wavesets is about 1/6 of the hull length, meaning it is travelling UPON (more accurately IN) 6 crests and 6 troughs at any given moment. Also, the depth of that channel would be minuscule compared to the ocean Therefore those waves have little mass and power to pitch that ship. Basically it is parting the water as it advances. Just look at it. The real reason that captain stood offshore in the storm before was WIND, which is a far greater danger to steering than that little bathtub current. AND, how can a ship roll with no side swell? You're making shit up. Use the breakwater as a reference point to the hull. It neither pitches nor rolls an inch. Ffs.

Standard bow for a lake ship, freshwater waves are steeper and closer together than ocean waves, putting more stress on the hull. So this is designed to smash through waves rather than ride up and down, reducing that stress. Plus it allows for more cargo space for its size and better visibility when going through some of the insanely tight spaces that this ship has to sail through (centimeters of space)!
