We were working a brush fire years ago, and it was just about to turn into a bunch of structure fires. There was a group of 14-16 year old boys just chomping at the bit to help. I put every one of them to work. Of course I didn't let them anywhere near the hot zone and never put them in the line of fire. You talk about a bunch of excited, hard working young men! And when it came time to roll up hoses, those guys were a true blessing.

I used to live on that street, and my mom still does. She made sure to call me and let me know it wasn't our section of homes, because I tend to panic. I am thankful to all the men and women that helped put out this fire. I am sorry to the families that lost their homes and pets. It was so eerie to hear the smoke alarms going off and seeing the huge flames.

The problem with row homes or any other buildings built like this is the fire can travel through the vent space under the peak of the roof and here in New York State we have apartment complexes built like these row homes

This is some of the best house fire vids I've ever seen KUDOS... but... if I hadn't skipped ahead a few times I might have gone on to the next one and not watched. Well, row houses or complex housing such as this is extremely difficult to get under control once the fire has made the attic space. There's so much void space for the fire to travel to. A lot of the time, you just have to wait for the roof to cave in so you can get some water on it from the master stream
@TheJj1307

Scott Black hence why building codes require firewalls to extend to top of roof. hopes is a fire in one apartment won't reach the adjoining one or at least slow it down.

Have watched many of these films and have seen many instances of non urgency in firefighters and their chiefs but feel this time they did the best that could be expected. No interior fire breaks leaves these homes open to total destruction in a fire. They fought from the inside as best they could and then brought in the big guys on the ladder which are very effective once the roof has gone. Even saw a few firemen running! Engine 3811 with its high power jet did a lot to reduce and extinguish the fire being used almost from the beginning. Could have been a total destruction situation. Well done guys - best you could have done with these timber/chipboard/plastic buildings which would not be allowed in the UK.

There is a lot to be learned from this video. As mentioned below, row houses are terrible, especially if there are no fire stops between sections, at least every other section. Not being there and not having all of the information that I.C. had at the time, I hesitate to be critical. At EVERY fire there are logistic, procedure and safety issues to be learned. BUT do we take the time to do it? I hope so. Stay safe all.

Builders need to be held accountable, legally, for not installing fire walls under the roofline, which allowed the fire to spread horizontally from one unit to another. Physically attached units are nothing but fire traps. Viewers should watch the conflagration that occurred at the Avalon apartment complex in Edgewater, New Jersey several years ago.

K-9 UNIT!? We need a FELINE unit! Funny, I remember in college, the apartment complex I lived in (off campus) told us there was a basement to roof fire wall between every two apartments in each section. A very simple concept that may have prevented this from taking out the whole building.

Go inside and stick a nozzle opened to a 50% cone through a small hole in the ceiling and wave it around. Then go into the next unit to do the same. Any long distance streams of water need spotters to the side so they don't water the backyard grass.

Paul Hoffman, Sr some guys standing around could be taking a break. you try wearing that bunker gear for hours on end in 1000 plus degree heat. they have lots of personell on these fires to rotate out and give some guys a break and a chance to hydrate. some guys are waiting for an assignment from the chief or scene commander. you don't just start showboating, that's how firefighters get killed.

Horrible response. I'm looking at at least two ladders with idle aerial lines. Back in Suffolk, NY we would have had that fire contained and knocked down long before. Clueless truckies. Hearing idle Scott packs left and right. Just wow. Oh and hey - let's try an ventilate after the entire roof has burnt off; just so it looks like we tried to save the place...glad I was never anywhere near these crews. Best part - "all interior units evac the building.." except - there were no interior attack teams. They actually sent in S&R AFTER the structural integrity of the structures had been compromised. Absolutely unreal.

Tough to watch. Priority should have been immediate primary searches of every unit. It didn't look like that was the case. Then get inside with a few lines, pull some ceiling and put out some fire. That was tough because of the lack of manpower on scene initially. The ladder trucks should have had access to the front of the building. Not sure why guys were venting after the roof was already caved in. Good training opportunity I guess. Surprising that more guys don't fall off ladders taking out windows. I've seen it. Raise the ladder to the side, and just above the window. Use a leg lock so your entire upper body and both hands are free. This is much safer, quicker and gets more work done. Pike poles are good for reach, but I prefer a halligan, or flat head ax. First smash and clear the glass, then take a giant swing and bust out the window sash and frame. Smooth bores on any master streams is ideal. Not tying to be overly critical, just sharing some thoughts. Ongoing training and education is important for us all.

No, Pennsylvania building codes require 3.25 inch studs between 2x4 supports.. attics suppose to be from floor to roof, no gaps.. 3.25 studs reinforced fire breaks.. have to look inside if they were ever installed. My dad was superintendent of construction, I served with heavy RESCUE company 51.. Delaware county pa... have to see and inspect.. get the ORGINAL COUNTY APPROVED DRAWINGS vs actually onsite build.

@@johngoglia6981 Should have been 5 firewalls if 6 dwellings. Stud and plaster is fine to a point but you should build party walls from brick as in UK. The whole of America is built to burn. No good putting flags up all over the place, you should spend the cash on proper firebreaks instead.

I think one of the spookiest things about fire is how it sneaks out from under the eaves. Just watch at the beginning as the first flames tentatively poke out. They seem to hesitate and then really get going all along under the edge. They seem to be saying, "oh good, look at all this space we can push through". It is like a whole lot of tiny little devils dancing in the air. Beautiful but deadly.

4:53 They are going to have some tall grass in the backyard this summer. 6:40 The smoke will be nice and cool also. I can't imagine what the guy in the back is thinking! 8:12 Anybody supervising this debacle? 8:35 Tell me there is another building beyond this one that is on fire. Please tell me that! This is called, "Let the fire come to you by letting the roof burn off."

Who is the guy in the green shirt? The fire chief? He appears to be in charge.

Oh, Was someone in Charge? LOL. If I was the chief, I'd take this video and sit down with the boys and take a looksee. NO judging, but a learning experience from the first parking of an engine to the idle crews and trucks. I know a dirty little secret (fires go out anyways when they run out of fuel) ssshhhh.

These guys are the worst. I would not want this guy showing up to all my fires if we were this bad an property conservation. More windows broken for no reason what so ever.
